Elizabeth wore a simple gown of the softest white chiffon. Her dark hair was swept off of her face, pinned with tiny pearls. Her father and James had planned the ceremony. It was intimate and elegant. There were less than 100 guests but invitations were highly sought after. The wedding would be covered by People magazine as well as the NYC society pages.
Elizabeth had never cared about any of that. She loved James and for her that was enough. If it had been up to her the wedding would have been held at the family chapel with just their parents. But James liked to make a splash.
He was taking her to Paris a few hours after the wedding. She just had to make it through the wedding. She needed to smile and shake hands and allow people to fawn over her and then she could be alone with James.
The music was understated and elegant. The vows were whispered and heartfelt. James even teared up as he put the ring on her finger.
The wedding and reception were being held at an exclusive hotel. Dancing was held on the candle lit balcony. She danced with her father and then with James. Then she excused herself to freshen up. She could hear her skirts rustle as she wandered to the ladies room.
Then she felt the soft cloth over her mouth, the chemical smell burning her throat. She tried to scream but she was already fading. She found herself falling against the arms holding her. She felt herself being lifted but that is all she could sense.
