Most "independents" are just conservatives who are ashamed to admit it.

Who would want to be a Democrat or Republican considering what those parties represent? I'd say most sane people are Independents, and I don't consider myself to be conservative in any way. I'm left-wing economically, believing in things like full employment on good wages and strong social security if not in work, I'm socially liberal on things like abortion and same-sex marriage, I'm an atheist etc.

But these days if you don't pick a side both sides squeal "You're helping them! So you're one of them!"

Let them squeal. Only Republican voters vote for the Republicans, and vice versa for the Democrats. Nobody else does.
