Ripe Fruit (closed for Lotus)

Kym

The new polished red fingernails taped across the phone screen, updating her Facebook status to ‘single’ and posting “Freedoom :) </3 :) at last!”

She should be sad about her breakup of two years. She was sad, for two days straight. She did nothing but moped and lazed around the house, feeling depress and pity. Then she realized that life was still rolling with or without her, depressed or not. Why did she have to dwell on the pass? She was young at twenty-six. She had plenty of time to start a new relationship, rebuild something newer and better. There were plenty of “other fishes in the pond” -courtesy encouragement from her BFF. And that was all it took for her to … move on. Maybe she wasn’t as attached to her ex as she thought.

She then tugged him away along with her phone in her pocket. She then concentrated on the pyramid of avocados. Luckily avocados were the last thing on her grocery list. Thank goodness because the manager just boomed over the intercom, “Customers of Mother Earth Food Coop. We’ll be closing in fifteen minutes. Thank you and have a good evening.”

Another voice drifted from behind her. Her long dark hair swayed across her back as she turned to find a tall man with full a beard. Her eyebrows and gaze rose to find a pair of bright blue intensive looked down at her. “Excuse me?” she questioned in puzzlement.

And then the stranger went on about the avocados. He sounded passionate about them. He knew a lot about them, blurting one fact about another, spotting the good ones from the bad. He was a talker, and she didn’t mind to be the listener. He sounded confident, yet not overtly cocky. She took the offered fruit. She squeezed it to feel the firmness. It felt just fine to her, and she would had buy that one until he reached out and warned, “But. You feel how dry and lose that skin is[...]Here.”

He then stepped closer, took her hand into his large rough ones, and taught her how to feel and pick them. It seemed silly to be so involve with avocados, but she went along. “I’m Leo, by the way[…]What are you making?”

She scoffed and shrugged. “Raw. I like them raw.” Her accent shown a little with the last word. She couldn’t quite roll her R’s correctly. “I’m Kym. I didn’t know there’s such art in picking avocados,” she said both teasing and impressed at the same time. She held one in each hand and smiled, “How about these? These should be good right? Well, we better hurry up and pick some, Leo. Or else they might lock us in here.”

Kym put a couple in her basket next to two bottle of wine, a few of other fruits, pate and crackers. “You know a lot about avocados huh? That’s quite... refreshing.”

Her hand was already waving and her feet were already scuffling along when Avocado Connoisseur bid his farewell. “Perhaps our paths will cross again one day.

Kym smiled, her already barely-there lips curled into a fine thin line after adding, “Perhaps. Enjoy your avocados, Leo.” She then walked off and headed to the register without looking back. She wondered if he would risk seconds away from the beloved green fruit to watch her walk off. For the hell of it, she added the pep in her steps. She swayed her hips more than usual but not too much to be a blunt giveaway. She didn’t have much of an ass, but she knew how to accentuate them with cloth and her posture. The same idea put into her small cup breasts. Fortunately, they were perky enough without the need for bra support. So she usually went without one, letting her girls hang naturally without restriction.

She turned into the checkout lane. She barely made out his figure back at the produce aisle from her peripheral view. She then was occupied with the cashier. He rang her up, she paid, another bagged her things. She balanced the brown bag in her arm as she headed out the door. Her eyes glued to the screen of her cell in her hand. She mastered the walking and texting, but was oblivious to everything else.

She strolled down street leisurely. She took her time to enjoy the summer heat against her bare skin; also multitasking limited her speed. Even in a short cotton dress, she was perspiring. The sweats trickled from her forehead to her chin, from her neck to the valley between two mounds. After a few blocks, she was back at her duplex. She stopped at the mailbox on her way.

The brown bag pinned between her legs while she thumbed through the letters. She threw a handful of junks, coupons, and whatnots in the trash bin provided. She then dropped the leftovers into the bag before she calmed over to pick the whole thing up. *Usually her long hair would thumble forward to provide a natural cover over her breasts. Due to their humidity and dampness of her locks, they locked in place behind her. Without realizing it, the bow-neck of the dress drooped as if her bosoms were about to spill out.

She straightened with the bag and headed down the steps. “Oh, hey,” she greeted when she saw a familiar face at the sidewalk. “Leo, right? Do you live here too?” She noticed he was empty handed. “What, those avocados weren’t ripe enough for you?” she pondered in a teasing tone.

What she thought to be an innocent conversation turned … creepy. Maybe Kym should had take the stranger’s fascination as a compliment, like he suggested. At least he had the gut in him to spill his gut like that. She couldn’t imagine it would be easy for him just to blurt things to a stranger like her. Although she admired his enthusiastic, it was all just too abrupt, too out of no where, too... creepy.

All she could do was stood and listened speechlessly. She didn’t peep a word when he asked, “do you have a boyfriend or husband, or girlfriend?” She just shook her head. Maybe she should have turn and run when he took a second breath. She didn’t. Strangely enough, him and this odd confession were mesmerizing. He was bold and forward, which was refreshing from guys she met. Even her ex seemed such chicken shit comparing to this Leo.

When he was done, she was still wordless. Her dark eyes stared at him. She bit his lips and took half a step back when he opened his arms. She bit her lips before she finally responded, “Eh. Mm. You do realize this is a little brash and sudden right? So you’ll understand I’m a little creep out, right?”

She took a deep breath. Her mind raced and weighed her options. “Look, Leo. I just broke up with my boyfriend so I’m not ready to jump right into another one. I tell you what. We should just go with a clean slate. The girls and I are heading to Bar 9 downtown tonight. Maybe I’ll run into you there. Okay?”

Kym slowly backed away and headed to her place. She glanced back over her shoulder this time, curious what the man was going to do.
