Natural habitat. That made Sage smile. "I'd like that very much," she answered in as soft a tone as he had used. Truth, she couldn't bear the thought of going home alone, not to mention the curiously tantalizing aura of anticipation that seemed to surround them.
As they closed up shop Sage busied herself with other things, making notes and offering suggestions for stocking a couple of the latest best sellers that had caught her eye. For all intents and purposes it was typical end-of-the-day routine, but her mind was swirling with thoughts.
What are you doing, Sage Kovacs, she asked herself. Pizza and good company is all, she rationalized. There was nothing wrong with that, was there? Besides, Stan was off schmoozing himself into a name on a sign, Vanessa and Stanley, Jr. were with Ernestine... Of course she was happy for her husband's opportunity for promotion, but his superior attitude on the phone had rankled. Basically he'd dismissed her job at Rivendell as no more than a whimsy and if he'd called her "hon" one more time... No, she thought, shuddering, make that "HUN". That was the one endearment she truly despised. It always sounded so... condescending.
"Ready?"
"Hmm?" She looked up from the notepad she had been ostensibly scribbling in. "Sorry. I didn't hear what you said."
"I asked if you were ready."
"As I'll ever be." As vague as that sounded, no truer words were ever spoken. Sage was going to go with the flow -- whatever that meant and where ever that took her.
Less than a half hour later they were at Arthur's. He'd called ahead and she'd run into the liquor store next door for a bottle of wine while he went into the pizzeria. "This gives new meaning to movable feast," she grinned as he unlocked the door and held it for her.
Arthur's house had a sort of retro feel to it -- furniture that looked relatively new but made her think of the fifties and early sixties. It was definitely built for comfort.
"I... like it," she said as Arthur walked her from room to room after he'd taken the pizza box from her and set it down. "Was this your parent's house?"
