RPG thread to stop hi-jacking

Here's the gaming thread so we can stop hi-jacking the Battlestar Galactica thread.

I played a game of Paranoia XP back in August. It was just as much fun as I remembered it. I spent half the game laughing and the other half cooking up evidence against the other players.

Twilight 2000 was an awesome game. I didn't get to play it as much as I would have liked, but I always had fun.

We talking console RPG or d10 or d20 based RPG's?

Play D&D and have played Legend of the Fire Rings (Oriental D&D) and enjoyed both.
But console RPG's? Just can't get into them.

hehe, I have no prob getting into console rpg's, I've been doin it since I was six . Perhaps you'd like some of bioware's aD&D games then vix, as I mentioned in the thread that we were hijacking, they are PC games but they use D&D rules and everything. Neverwinter Nights, you may have heard of, is a very big one.

Aeroil- haven't played any of the Bioware games.
And sadly, have had to give up playing computer games for the time being- hurts my wrists too much (long story). Stupid "tendonitis."

ah, tendonitis and PC games is a bad combination. If you do try, Neverwinter Nights has pretty high specs, you may wanna try Baldurs Gate if your PC isn't up the challenge.

Tell me about it. I've a level 50 healer in DAOC and can't play the bloody game becaues it hurts too much.

A friend gave me a copy of one of the Forgotten Realms games (least I think it was an FR game) and playing that irritated my wrists too.

Being broken sucks and not in a good happy way.

Still, I can play D&D so I'm happy with that.

While Role-Playing Games can mean so many different things on this board, I am referring to table-top games. Dungeons and Dragons, Twilight 2000, Toon, Paranoia, Top Secret, Boot Hill, Vampire, etc.

For fun I'll also include Warhammer games, Car Wars, Space Hulk, Battletech, Settlers of Cataan and other games.

I like my Final Fantasy games, and I loved the Baldur's Gate games, but they aren't the same as table-top stuff.

C plays a variety of tabletop stuff.. he has a complete Warhammer table setup in our basement, and makes me paint his miniatures sometimes because I'm better at it than he is. It's all my fault for picking up his gryphon figure and saying 'ooh, I want to paint this one'.

He also plays GURPs and D & D from time to time, and we both play on World of Warcraft with some of our friends, to add in a MMORPG in there... though as stated, that's not anything like tabletop.

The online ones pass the time, but they're a poor substitute, imo, to gaming with a group.

the forgotten realms games are the bioware games, and I've also read some of the forgotten realms books, they're pretty good, actually, for books that are related to video games

I thought the books came first, LOL.
I've read the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the second book in the Hunter's Blade Trilogy because its all I could find.

I've played Vampire: Requiem (Least I think that was the title) but need to work on my role playing a bit more. Harder to play a vamp type that I've never seen before nor read about then it is to play a D&D character that I understand becaues I read read way too much fantasy.

ooh, I have age of mythology too, although not the expansion. It's a really complex game though, so you'd better be good if you want to play online , I'm fairly good and I get ran over by some of the better players.

As for the forgotten realms books coming out before the games, I dunno, I was probably quite young when they came out lol so I don't remember. I've read all of salvatore's forgotten realms books (dark elf trilogy, icewind dale trilogy, legacy of the drow, paths of darkness, and the first two of the hunters blade because the third isn't out yet.) I'm also reading the war of the spider queen as it comes out, excellent series. I've also read the baldur's gate books but it wasn't that good, certainly not compared to the storyline in the game. Although I thought it was kinda funny that Imoen was a lesbian in the books (she has a crush on mellisan).

Yeah, it's one of C's diversions, and I mostly play to pass the time and because several of our friends play, so it's a good way to group up and chat while cruising around killing stuff. They've done a nice job with the game environment, though.

It can add up after a while, with the game cost then the subscription, but I probably won't keep a constant subscription after a month or two more.. I may let it lapse, then pay when I'm in the mood to play.

First - yes, you would have been quite young when the books came out - I was in jr high and I'm ... what ... 10 years older than you?

Second - the Ages of Mythology that we have is NOT the computer/online version - it is an rpg board game.

27 ... so only 9 years (and I did say that while there is a computer version, we had the boardgame version - try to read more closely next time, I'm not upset, just be more careful).

To play the game or read the series?

Game- need the Player's Handbook in the edition your group's using. Most that I know of are now using the latest edition: 3.5 which is pretty straightforward, least I think so. Comes with a basic character sheet but more can be gotten here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718b

Your Dungeon Master (DM) should, optiomly, have a DM's Guide, Monster Manuals and a book or two about the setting he's using, be it Forgotten Realms, Grayhawk or other realm.

To read the books- two choices I can recommend- either the DragonLance series by Margert Weis and Tracy something-or-other or the Forgotten Realms books by R. A. Salvatore.

I've read all of the dragonlance books that were actually written by Hickman and Weiss (I even have one signed by them - neener neener )

As for what edition "my group" is using ... I have to find a group first LOL
