This story line is probably in many SciFi plots, but there is one in particular I'm trying to recall. I'm not even sure if it was a TV series or a movie.

An odd sort of 'person' along the lines of Zathras on Babylon 5, the sole non machine presence. The machine is portrayed as extremely large, almost planet sized. The character is aging and ailing and needs to find their replacement or the machine itself will 'die'.

Could have been B5 or Star Trek or something else. I just can't place it.

Seems like there's a central place this character occupies much of the time where they somehow connect with the machine and almost become a part of it.

Wasn't this the plot of one of the first Star Trek movies? V-ger?

No. V-ger was the Earth Probe VoyaGER that had sort of gone astray and collected stuff, but it sort of maintained itself looking for the Creator, whoever designed it.
