Hi everyone
Over the years it seems like just about everything has been discussed here on Lit. Well atleast a huge variety of things.
Does anyone have experience with " Pellet stoves" currently I suppliment my heat with a air tight wood stove. I used to get alot free wood. Unfortunately that has changed, Im looking at changing, upgrading to a Pellet stove They seem to look appealing.
Easy to maintain, no chimney- no creosote, not lugging wood only bags, easier storage, plus there is very little dust as you get from wood and I like the fact that you can regulate it.

If anyone has experience good or bad please post reply or PM me. Recomendation of types also whould be nice. Thank You all in advance. Debby

I don't know al that much about pellet stoves, other than they were invented by one of my high-school classmates.

I do know several people who own one and haven't heard a single bad thing about them.

The only potential drawback I can see is the availability of fuel; Your conventional wood burner can burn almost anything in a pinch, but a pellet stove requires the pelletized wood to operate. If you have a reliable source of fuel, then pick one you like the look of and buy it.

my father got a pellet stove about 10 years ago to replace his wood stove (gettin' up in age and didn't want to haul wood all over creation).

primarily, they LOOK good. i can't speak to the cost of the pellets as compared to wood for a wood stove but i think it's comparable and probably more cost efficient than gas or electric. of course, the price probably varies by locale. shop around they're available from all sorts of sources and the prices can be vastly different from one supplier to another.

like WH said, i haven't heard anything bad about them at all. if you have dry air from your wood stove, you'll likely have it with the pellet stove too. that's about it though. if i had to recommend something, i'd say go for it.

I want to thank you EJFan, and Weird Harold for your reponses and look forward to hear from more Lit members

Have a great day :rose:

We looked into wood pellet stoves a few years ago along with other options.

The one problem we had was we did not want anything which was electrically run. And believe it or not, there are electrically run wood/pellet stoves out there.

Living in the sticks like we do, and on an unstable power grid, being able to run the stove without the need for electricity is paramount in my book.

Harold mentioned the most important factor for pellets. The availablity for fuel. Before you buy any pellet stove look around in your area and see where you can get the pellets, and what the cost is. Wood for a stove is bulky and you need a fair amount of it if the stove is your sole source of heat in the winter. But unlike pellets, wood is easier to store outdoors. Pellet bags I've seen tend towards paper and need to be kept very dry. Picture picking up a bag and having it break open spilling 1000s of pellets everywhere. :D
