Sadly tattoos have become so common that every celebrity or college coed has one on their shoulder blade or the lower back region.
I think a tattoo should take thought and have a story behind it. I've seen some that memorialize a lost loved one or some that pay tribute to someone. Some represent a hardship that has been overcome.
Don't just get some random tattoo slapped on your body. Design one yourself or take an existing one that you see in an artist's gallery and expand on it to make it yours. Let it tell a story.
As for pain. It all depends on the location of the tattoo, your threshold of pain, the intricacy of the tattoo and the artist.
