Should the U.S. have annexed Mexico?

At the time, some Americans objected it was inconsistent with American ideals of democratic-republican government to extend it by force.

And then John Calhoun stood up and said, "Wait a minute, these people just aren't WHITE!"

An unstated objection was that there was no slavery in Mexico -- it had been abolished some years before the Texas Revolution. So admitting the Mexican states would destroy the whole Southern political calculus of making sure there were always at least as many slave states as free states in the Senate.

We have trouble just swallowing little Puerto Rico because it's Spanish-speaking. Annexing Mexico would really change what it means to be American.

Of course, if the U.S. had annexed Mexico, we would now have no immigration problem to speak of.

We would have gotten some awesome territory -- but it would come with a dysfunctional society.
At least Americans would have access to decent health care without either being employed by the government or needing a passport.

How would having a lot of Mexicans in Congress make all that possible?
