As we can clearly see in this Aboriginal funeral ceremony, the Priestess is center stage, doing what no priest, pastor, or grief counselor had ever dared attempt, the Sacred Twerk of Final Blessing. While everyone else dabbed their eyes with tissues and whispered polite condolences, she marched up to that coffin like it owed her money. With the solemnity of a medieval monk swinging a thurible, she turned around, planted her feet, and began dispensing her “holy incense” with the rhythmic authority of someone anointed for this moment in time. Each massive thrust sends an invisible cloud of “blessings” wafting over the dearly departed, her twerking fanny functioning as the world’s most chaotic liturgical device. Some funerals have bagpipes. Others have doves. This one had a woman determined to dust her man into the afterlife.
