Have you ever been in a relationship that starts off great, but pretty soon all you're talking about is the relationship? That's when the whole thing goes sour - when the relationship becomes all about the relationship. Kinda like what's happening here... I mean, exactly how many threads do we need about how much excessive posting there is? Isn't that a wee bit hypocritical - excessively posting about excessive posting?
Weird Harold made a very astute observation in a post, and no one even responded to it because everyone was all too busy complaining. He said that it wasn't the NUMBER of posts that was the problem, but the RELEVANCY. If someone posts a hundred posts a day and they're all on topic and relevant, no one complains. However, if someone else posts 10 posts a day and they have nothing to do with the topic of the thread they're on, that comes across as excessive.
Removing the titles won't do a thing, except take a little of the fun out for many people. It's not going to discourage posting. You want the board to be interesting? Make it interesting! Fill it with insightful posts! How exactly is complaining making the board more fun to read? It's not. It turns people off. And it discourages cool people from posting, because they're afraid of being ragged on for "posting too much".
There are many interesting threads happening RIGHT NOW. Contribute to those, or start your own. If there's someone who tends to post inappropriately, then nudge them gently in the right direction. It's hard for us oldsters to realize, but newbies aren't presented with the Literotica Rulebook of Posting Etiquette. Just like you did, they must learn via trial and error - and help from the more experienced posters.
Like DCL, I also think this is much ado about nothing. I scrolled through the topic list, and there's good stuff there. However, Literotica is growing. We get more posts in a day than ever before. And not all of them will interest you, because we all have different interests. If you all spend as much time posting and responding intelligently as you do moaning about "quality", I guarantee you will enjoy this place. It's fun, really! :
What everyone seems to forget is that we've ALWAYS had our share of excessive posters, even back in the day before these titles. If I really truly thought that removing the titles would make people post on topic, I would. It won't - why would it? Those who think that's the Magic Bullet that would make the whole board stay on topic aren't thinking rationally. To blame titles for what we deem "bad" posting etiquette is like blaming driver's licenses for car accidents.
The perceived abundance of exuberent posting is the result of increased traffic - it's more of the same stuff that's always been there. Instead of one or two newbies at a time, we have ten or twenty or more. People new to the board sometimes have trouble staying on topic - they haven't been around enough to know the "rules".
You want to make the board a better place? Post something worth reading. It's the insightful, intelligent posts that make people come back.
So, no. I care about the board as much as anyone, if not more. After much discussion with Manu and much thought on the subject, we've decided the titles stay. We both feel it's ludicrous to think that something as silly as a title is forcing people to post off topic. If we were giving away cash prizes on that 1000th post, I could see your point. And those of you who want the titles removed...lighten up. This is supposed to be fun. Now, if we can all stop running the subject into the ground and start actually posting all that intelligent and relevent stuff you all so desire...
Unless someone has something new to add to the discussion, I'm done talking about it. I appreciate the input, and hope you will take the time to read what I've posted and actually think it through, because I'm making sense (for a change).
