It was a small house, near campus, that my family had owned for a couple generations. My father had lived in it when he went to school here at Golden State University, as had my grandfather. We rented it out to students when we didn't have family attending who could use it, but now that I was attending college here, it was all mine.
Nothing fancy. Two bedrooms, a small kitchen, living room and bathroom. A basement. The front and back yards were small as well. Like I said, nothing fancy.
I'd always been the quiet, studious type. A nerd, I guess. I spent my free time at the local comics and games shop a few blocks away, mostly playing the Magic collectible card game, which I'd been playing and collecting for years. Those damn cards comprised the only real mess in my room, really.
I had a housemate, too. Her name was Gwen. Her rent took care of the utilities and such. I had been pretty picky about who I let move in; she was studious, quiet, and nerdy like me. And so we had a peaceful, quiet house. We didn't talk much. I think we were both painfully shy. She was quite attractive, though. That certainly didn't help with my shyness!
It was a Friday night. I had just won the small weekly Magic tournament at the comics shop, and was feeling quite good about myself. A lot of time, study, and preparation had finally paid off. My buddies from the shop wanted to celebrate, and we wound up enjoying quite a few pitchers of beer at a nearby pub called "the Library".
I didn't party much at all. This kind of night out was really the extent of it, and it didn't happen often. The alcohol helped me come out of my shell a good bit though. Buoyed by my own success at the tournament, I was enjoying a surge of uncommon self-confidence and bravado. I even flirted with a couple of the girls at the bar, though walked away without any phone numbers.
It was a bit of a stumble back to the house, but not too far. It was just after midnight when I got there, and couldn't help but notice that Gwen's light was still on in her room. I opened the front door and called out to her.
"Gwen? You home? It's just me, Tommy," I said, shutting the door behind me. I'd picked up a twelve-pack of beer along the way, so I headed for the kitchen to stash it in the fridge...
