Teagan: "Trussed Up"

The pair was unconscious when John reached the Portal Site. He immediately leveled his shotgun and swept the area for others who may have regained consciousness early; his encounter with the horse had told him that wake up times weren't consistent, although he wasn't sure whether that difference was inter-species or intra-species.

He immediately secured the man -- it was nice of him to bring his own halter rope, John mused -- with his arms behind his back, then strung his feet a couple of feet off the ground to a tree, making it impossible for him to escape. Then he tied the girls hands behind her back, bound her feet together, tossed her over his shoulder, and headed down the mountain.

John had always known there was a possibility -- even a likelihood -- that two or more people might come through at the same time. After all, the Wednesday portal activated around noon, when people are together in businesses or at lunch; and the Saturday night portal was near midnight when couples are dancing -- horizontally as well as vertically, or simply lying in bed near one another. (He'd often wondered if Estuary Woman had been flirting around for her man -- or woman -- when she'd just disappeared in a flash of blinding light.)

He had known he needed a plan, and this one was the best he could come up with.

He hurried down the mountain as fast as he could to a huge mangrove-looking tree, where he set her on her haunches, leaned back into the tree's trunk. He positioned each of her outstretched legs to straddle a small tree growing just between where her thighs were, then ran another tope over her waist and under the trees exposed roots. He untied her hands and bound each of them separately to the little tree, a few inches apart; she would be comfortable, he hoped, but her hands would be far enough apart that she wouldn't be able to reach the other and get herself loose.

She wasn't going anywhere, he knew; not until he came back for her.

Then, checking the hood to ensure it was secure but allowing her to breath, she beat feet back up to the Portal site to deal with the man up top.

Teagan came to slowly feeling like she had been throw from a horse. She had a sick feeling in her stomach and felt like she couldn't breath. She retched a little. That woke her up more as she realized that she had something over her face. She moved to pull it away and could move. What the hell? She struggled. Who the hell tied her up? She retched again and was happy she didn't actually bring anything up. She wanted water.

The last thing she remembered was being in the barn with Dr. McCool. And some weird dreams. She leaned her forehead on the tree? in front of her. God, she was hot. Where was she?

She started to panic. "Hey!" She screamed. "Hey! Help me! Someone help me. Dr. McCool! Help!" She alternated screaming and trying to get herself loose. She tried to use the tree to push the hood up. She could get it up to her nose, but as soon as she moved back it fell back into place.

Her head was pounding and the screaming didn't help. She screamed again and started to cry.

How long had it been since she's come to? It had to be hours. The sweltering heat of late afternoon had her sweating from every pore, and added to the nausea and disorientation, she was beginning to think she was hearing things.

The rustling, first far away, could have been just the wind, but soon it became obvious -- even to an exhausted woman whose hearing was hampered by a full head hood -- that the sound was closing on her.

Teagan stirred from her drowse , it hadn't really been a nap. Just weak exhaustion. She thought she heard something. She listened again. It was getting closer.

"Help! I'm over here! Help!"

Her mouth was dry and her voice was hoarse. As she paused to try and work up another yell she realized it could be some animal coming this way. Or whoever it was who tied her up in the first place. It wasn't like she was going to surprise him if that was the case.

The noise neared Teagan -- to just feet, then inches -- until finally a woman's voice spoke quietly, timidly ... not in English, something ... northern European ... Swedish, Finnish ...

And then, in heavily accented English with a sound of deep concern, "Okay you?"

Teagan could hear the person walk right up to her. They moved quietly now. She didn't know what to expect. She tensed.

The woman's voice was soft and sounded worried. She had an accent. "Not okay me." Teagan said mimicking the woman. She struggled with the ropes again. "Untie me." She practically yelled. Did this stupid woman think she tied herself up for shits and giggles? She softened her voice. "Please? And get this damned hood off me."

"Okay," the voice said, closer still to Teagan. Hands moved to Teagan's head, pulled at the string holding the hood in place, pulled it away.

The Woman immediately pulled back away from Teagan rocking back onto her heels in a sort of upright fetal position, her knees and hands concealing her nude body.

No sooner did Teagan make eye contact then the woman began sobbing and rattling away in her own tongue once more.

Aaah. The feel of fresh air. Teagan hadn't realized just how hot is had been under that thing until it was removed. But the woman was freaking out on her. And, wow, okay. She was really naked. Except for a long pearl necklace.

Seriously? What the fuck? Was she dreaming? And someone else's dream at that.

"English, English. Slow down." Shit. She needed this woman to untie her. She had no idea what language she was speaking. Something Scandinavian maybe. It sounded a little like Lars, that visiting philosophy professor she met at a special lecture on musical aesthetics. Mmmm, Lars.

Stop it.

"Se Habla Espanol?" Teagan knew some conversational Spanish. If the woman wanted to talk about going to the biblioteca or cinema. Shit.

"Calm down. Please don't cry." Teagan said trying to sound soothing. She needed this woman to untie her and tell her where the hell she was.
