But yet many species exhibit such behaviors -- in a way that appears to be hardwired and instinctive. Why not? Evolution is a kludge. The sex drive whose basic purpose is reproduction can also be used for other purposes.

And "the future" of humanity might well involve artificial modes of reproduction.
