Let's get back to this topic. I don't doubt for a second that the welfare state provides a disincentive for people (of all races please, since the majority of the poor are white) to somehow earn enough money to climb out of poverty. Many do, more than many do not. On the other hand, it's not quite that simple, is it? A large percentage of poor are elderly and children, so what is the policy to address that or is the answer not to have a policy at all? Then again, the "get a job" answer isn't complete either given lack of good paying jobs, transportation, and criminal justice reform.

I disagree. Personally, I spend much time actively looking for a job. However, I honestly cannot count the number of times I have seen places say they are "hiring", but only for management-type positions, &/or jobs that the signs say REQUIRE that type of experience. "Speaking" for myself, I would gladly take a lower-level job I thought might lead to one of those, but when those jobs (with those aforementioned requirements) are all you are hiring-for/offering, you & I can (I believe) agree it's not my fault I don't have that or apply for the positions you want to fill.

Again, I disagree. My sole sibling married a man solely due to expecting his child. She then quit hers before she became pregnant. Almost a decade (& 4 kids) later, he still works & she still does not, which is (I assume) the reason they get gov't. assistance as well as from both of my parents.

Why is there only 1 parent so much of the time? To answer that question, I again look at my own personal situation. I have never dated anyone. Therefore, I get no government assistance to take care of my 0 kids. Why do I have 0 kids? Not by choice. I went to public school, where much of the females in my graduating class was interested in "the bad boys", which I was far from being. If we were to have a class reunion, I am almost sure many of the female classmates would be accompanied by (or at least telling of) their children, while the majority of the males would be not in attendance, due to an even mix of jail time & trying to stay hidden & avoid being contacted regarding child support.
