Some exceedingly unscientific stats on AH languages and genders.

A little while ago I asked whether or not the USA had an unusually low representation in AH compared to other English speaking** countries.

There were several pages of replies, as expected, all over the place, so to get a tiny bit of clarity on the question, I counted the language stats of 93 people known to me to frequent AH. So the sample is very small and obviously biased towards people who would catch my attention. For example, there are no people in my sample who only visit the game threads.

Since I was bothering to look at bios, I also collected stats on gender.

USA - 26
UK - 9
Australia - 4
Canada - 4
NZ - 1
Not USA - 2
Unknown - 40
Non-English speaking country - 7

So to answer my initial question, when looking at known people from English speaking countries, the US members are 59%. Pretty close to what one would expect from a site that draws on the populations of many, mostly western, countries. I conclude that my sense for an unusually small proportion of Americans stems from my not having been part of a group that easily extends to many countries. The only other web board I frequent is oriented to American politics.

And for what it's worth, here are the gender stats (I put trans people in their chosen sex).
M - 57
F - 26
Unknown - 10

** This time I'll be clear that by "English speaking" I mean countries which have historically spoken English. My apologies to those who wanted to see the billions(?) of English speakers in places like India, Pakistan and Nigeria represented. It was just beyond me. Besides that, my tiny sample of AH members didn't have any of those people who were identifiable.

And for those who think I'm being chauvinistic because I assume that the "usual" case would be more Americans than others, not so. It's a statistic. The American population is 70% of the total population from English speaking countries (as defined above.)

I was traveling in Europe and met some New Zealanders. To demonstrate that I knew something about New Zealand, I said, "Oh, New Zealand is close to Australia." The wrong thing to say.

Nope. Didn't find any Kiwis. Are you a Kiwi???? I found I didn't even know your sex.
I am! I think I recall hearing from a couple people here that they were from New Zealand, but I don't remember who it was: they might not be very regular on the forum. I may have mentioned my sex a few times, but don't draw attention to it, as NZ is pretty small and it wouldn't take a whole lot of information for someone to narrow things down and figure out who I am.

Hmm. Better "close to Australia" than "left off the world map altogether" (which is a bit of a trend)... We have a layered relationship with the Aussies. :p

I have edited the post to add NZ and adjust the "unknown" to 40 and the percent from 60.45% to 59%.

This is what similarweb has to say.

I'm not sure it'll work, but two numbers that are relevant to recent conversations: 58% of visits to Lit are from the US (UK is next, followed by Germany, so not even an "English-speaking" country), and the female:male split is 24:76, which is strikingly close to 8letters' result.

Apparently the Lit German offering is one of the biggest German story sites, though the forum is smaller (but lumping all the topics of the English forum into one makes it often interesting...)

I suspect the 24% female hugely underestimates the numbers of women who read and who are on the forum - I know I'm far from alone in removing my gender from my profile to cut down on the tide of sleazy PMs - from a few daily to now only a few a month. Bit like how the commonest stats on Fetlife are no gender, age 99 and location: Antarctica...

I once told someone I was going to visit New Zealand, and she said, "You should go Australia on the same trip, it's right next door." Somehow the fact that it's actually a multi-hour plane flight didn't convince her otherwise.

I cant tell the differences between Austalian and New Zealand accents.

If I meet someone who sounds like one of the two I always guess Kiwi.

If Im right I make them smile.
If Im wrong, I give them this explanation and make them smile.

I decided to also survey those most familiar to me. To see if my personality had influenced the results. They looked pretty similar except for the Unknown groups, and that makes sense, as I was more likely to get info about language and gender from posts and things other than bios.

Larger sample Those most familiar to me

USA – 26-------------------------------------------- 11
UK – 9----------------------------------------------- 4
Australia – 4---------------------------------------- 2
Canada – 4----------------------------------------- 2
NZ – 1------------------------------------------------ 1
Not USA – 2----------------------------------------- 0
Unknown – 40-------------------------------------- 9
Non-English speaking country – 7-------------- 5

Americans are 59% of the known English speakers in my total sample, and 55% of those familiar to me. The U.S. population is70% of the populations of the listed English speaking countries.

M – 57--------------21

F – 26---------------11

?? – 10----------------2

If you are flying halfway around the world what's a few more hours?
Americans take multi-hour plane flights to go to Vegas for a weekend. It's not something we regard as a big deal.

I still don't think of Vegas as "next door" to Atlanta.

Well, what you consider "next door" isn't the issue.
It's actually faster to fly from Sydney to Auckland than it is from Atlanta to Las Vegas.

...exceedingly unscientific...

You got that right. I'm not a statistician nor a professional pollster, but I did get A's in college classes in probabilities and statistics. Your sample is way too small and your source data too unreliable to draw any conclusions at all. The only reliable data point is AH participation. Any other personal information can, and usually is, distraction and/or obfuscation because of the very nature of the business of LitErotica.

For instance, I have noticed that some male authors profile themselves as female, only outing themselves in forum chatter. So which are you supposed to believe?

Like I tell my wife, "Constantly jumping to the wrong conclusion is not an exercise program."

Um, okay, so where am I in these stats? Do you have one for an African-American woman with a slight Okie drawl?

I don't recall drawing any conclusions.
