Someone To Watch Over Me

"I'm a woman.
That means I break hard.
And mend like a motherfucker;
all sexy and full of heartbreakingly beautiful scars."

- Staceyann Chin

Yesterday was Nelson Algren's birthday...I heard this on A Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor from whom I learned that in Algren's book, A Walk on the Wild Side (1956), set in the world of pimps and prostitutes in New Orleans, he artculates his three rules for life:

"Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom's. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own."

These seem like good rules.

I am not a convenience.
I am so much more than a dirty text
or a flash of breast.
Try talking to me, and you’ll see.
I have a depth to me,
A quirky sense of humor,
A deep sense of social justice,
And a fierce loyalty.

I am not a convenience.
I am worth more than
Your shoddy attempts at seduction:
“You’ve got a great ass.”
Your poorly taken dick pic,
Your atrocious grammar
That shows how little care you invest.

I am not a convenience.

You have a particular love of architecture.
Becoming enthusiastic as we drive past building after building
fabulous details.
exquisite craftsmanship
You stop the car... grinning.
you leave it running in the no parking zone...
saying... "I'll be right back..."
It's raining. And you dash across the street
zig zagging to avoid the traffic.

I watch you... I cannot help but smile.
Your shoes splashing slightly in the water collecting on the sidewalk.
Turning, you work to frame the building in your camera.
The rain... Each drop creating little patterns of concentric circles as it falls.

The moment seems to last forever as I watch you.
The single frame only capturing the building.
But my heart... sees you. In the rain. Finding joy.
It is... beyond words.
