Soulless

As she listened to him, a thought suddenly struck her. Apparently disregarding whatever he had just said she stood, "You know, i don't even know your name." She tilted her head. She had heard him, but she often didn't acknowledge her inner thoughts, at least not outwardly.

"I don't have one." She smirked, "My mother died before she could name me and my father threw me off a cliff" she slowly circled him, like a lioness circling her prey. "I once heard a Demon call me Wraith, he explained that i had been given a name by my hunters because i had an uncanny knack of escaping capture, or death." she shrugged, "This name was the last thing he said before i cut out his heart" she sounded cold, distant, almost as if it were a trivial matter, as she recollected this. Her human mind couldn't deal with what she had done in the past to keep herself alive, so it just chose to dismiss it. "So i guess that will have to do for now, Wraith" She nodded, satisfied that she had thusly named herself.

She stopped directly behind him after she made a few slow circles. "So what's yours?" she asked softly, her low singsong voice almost enchanting.....annoyingly enchanting.

I looked at her and wondered what type of life she had had up to this point and what it had done to her, what type of person it had made her. I knew that I would give anything to help her but I wondered what I could do to make it so and whether or not she would accept any type of help that I offered her.

"My name, my real name is Abraham. There are not many people who know it and those who have found it out have tried to control me and make me kill people for them but I have turned on them and have had to kill them so that could not tell anyone and try to control me again."

It was then that I realized where we were and I knew that we could not stay outside more often than was necessary which made me want to ask if she had some place where we could go where I would be safe, at least for a little while.

She smiled, "And yet you give me your name freely. Don't you think i have the power to control you?" her voice took on an insidious tone. This was the longest she had ever talked to a demon.

"Abraham," she tested it on her lips, her eyes returned to a misty green as her expression became curious once more. She noticed his nervous glance around. "I suppose Demons don't like being in public much?" she asked, a slight chuckle escaping her lips.

"Perhaps you would prefer to be somewhere more.....safe?" she asked, finally acknowledging that he too was in trouble from the demon world. She nodded, if she trusted him, she would have to show it. "Come with me", without a backward glance she leapt up once more onto the roof. Running along, almost silently, she thanked her Demon blood. It opened up a whole new mode of travel. She couldn't teleport like all other Demons seemed to be able to do, but she was fast.

She didn't bother to check if he was behind her, if he trusted her, he would follow. She suddenly dropped down onto a ledge. They were roughly half the city away from their last location. "This should be safe, until a new Hunter comes and finds this place too" she nodded, not seeing if he was behind her, she was used to talking to herself. She ducked into the open window and stood in the bedroom apartment she had found abandoned some days ago.....

I stood in the apartment and looked around, trying to figure out if it was safe of me to have brought Wraith into this life of mine as she could be in danger just for helping me. I wanted to tell her so but I knew that if I did so it would make her angry at me and I needed her on my side because I knew that I could not do it by myself. I walked slowly back over to the window and watched the people as they walked around on the street then without even turning to look at her said, "You think that it is crazy of me to want to be good do you not. You know that I am a demon and you know what demons are like, how they love nothing better than to destroy everything in this world but I want to tell you and I hope that you believe me when I say that I do not want to do that anymore, I cannot do that anymore."

She cocked her head as she turned around to look at him. "Yes i do wonder why. But for the moment i need you." she gave him an unforgiving stare, "Someday, my father will hunt you. That day you will not die by his hand. He will die by mine" She was deliberately putting herself in the path of the Demon Hunters. Using him as bait. Call this callous, but she preferred it as an opportunity taken.

"Rest here" she indicated the bed, and disappeared to the kitchen. She was hungry....

I stood there at the window and watched the people out in the street, going about there lives without the knowledge of what else was out in the world. I wished that I could be one of them at the moment, so naive that I could go about my life without having to worry who or what was going to come about me and kill me. I knew that Wraith wanted me close to her so that she would kill my brother when he tried to kill me and I knew that it was not worth the worry that other people would place in it becasue I knew that if I had to die then I would die.

I heard her move slowly towards the kitchen of the apartment and ask me if I wanted to get some rest. That sounded good but as much as I wanted to rest I stood there, still looking out the window.

She rummaged around the fridge. She wondered what Abraham was doing in the bedroom, but shrugged the thought aside.

She took out some bread and butter and mushrooms. She made some toast, the delicious smell of hot toasted bread soon wafting through the apartement. She fried some of the mushrooms in the butter to complete the snack. She piled the mushies ontop of the toast and sat down to eat. She didn't offer any food to him, for some reason, she thought that Demons didn't eat....or something like that.

Despite being hunted all her life, she didn't know much about her hunters. Just how to kill them.

She sighed and tucked into her food.....for the moment forgetting about the ex demon in the next room. Eating was the one thing that she enjoyed in life, other than killing her hunters....

Vykariel

Vykariel strode along the sidewalk, head up, hands jammed in the pockets of her leather coat, dark glasses over her eyes, chewing her lip absently. She was off in her own world, forgetting everyone and everything.

She stopped so suddenly, a kid on a skateboard ran into the back of her.
"Hey watch it!" the kid yelled from the ground, giving her the finger. She wasn't even listening. She was staring at a window up high on one of the buildings. Staring at the man who was staring down at her. She sniffed. Not human. She grinned, the tips of her canines pushing over her bottom lip. She felt an insistant nudging at her leg and look down, annoyed.
"What?!" she hissed.
"Geroff my freaken leg!" the whinging kid said.

She looked down, realising her boot heel was on the corner of his too baggy pants. "Little punk," she thought. She leaned down to him, and gave him a big smile, showing her prominant fangs. The kid gasped and wrenched his leg away and ran, yelling out "Freak!" as he went.

Vykariel sighed. Freak indeed. Like she wanted to be what she was. She muttered to herself darkly and looked back up towards the window. The man was still there. She waved.

I stood there and looked outside, not expecting to see anything or anyone in particular but it was then that I had the feeling that I was being watched and looked down to see the person standing there looking at me. I wondered what was happening, if she even knew that I was there and it was then that she waved and I wondered what was going on. I stood there and looked at her for a second, wondering what I was going to do but if was then that I knew I could not stay here.

I moved slowly away from the window and looked towards the kitchen, at where Wraith had gone and wanted to tell her what I had seen but I knew that I could not tell her what I had seen becuase I did not know myself. I moved towards the door and reached out to touch it but knew that there were easier ways to leave this place and closed my eyes, disappearing in a shimmer of light.

When I reappeared I was standing in the park quite a fair distance away from the female that I had seen. I stood there and watched her, determined to see who she was and what she wanted. More importantly I wanted to see if she was a danger to me and those around me.

Vykariel winced slightly at the soft shimmer of light, glad her glasses were on. She realised whoever she was watching had left, but not gone too far, from what she could sense. She could feel they were close enough by to be watching her. But she couldn't pin point where.

She purred softly in her throat and continued on the way she was going. To the park.

She arrived at the park and stood at the edge of the man made lake, while man made lillies and reeds moved in the cool night air, thinking. Wondering who the man was in the window and why he fascinated her so. She knew he wasn't human. That much was certain. But what he was and why he was here. Who knew. She knew that she was lonely. She wanted someone of her kind to speak with. Someone who wouldn't scream when they found out what she was. Someone supernatural.

She stood, staring over the lakes surface, watching the reeds and lillies until nightfall, oblivious to any other prescence around her. Watching.. Wondering.. Wishing.

I stood there for a long time, wondering if I should talk to her. I wanted to go and talk to her but I did not know if I should because I did not know if she was someone that was out to kill me or if she was out to help me. I moved to a bench and sat down on it, leaned my head on one hand and watched this woman. I knew that she was not human, that much I could sense but I did not know who or what she was yet and I did not want to go to her if she was going to hurt me.

After a while I knew that I could not wait any longer because I had to find out who and what she was so I got to my feet and moved slowly closer, feeling my power start to flow through me as I did in case she decided to attack me. I knew that I was being stupid because I knew that there were things out there that would like nothing more than to kill me but I hat to find out.

As soon as I was close enough to her I said, "I know that you are not fully human as you can tell that I am not but I want to ask you this. Why are you here?"

She sighed and suddenly winced as she felt a spike of energy in the adjacent bedroom. She stood and cautiously moved to the door. It had closed in her absence, perhaps he had taken her advice and was resting. She wasn't sure.

Wraith tiptoed softly up to the door and turned the handle gently. She opened the door with the barest of sounds, a ball of blue flame at the ready, just incase. She peeked into the room and then sighed, there was no-one there.

No-one there. Her eyes widened as she realised that Abraham was no longer in the room. She stepped into the bedroom and walked quickly to the window, sensing his presence near. As she gazed out the window, she noticed that he was across the way. She climbed out of the window and crouched down onto the ledge, watching him, a distant smile on her face.

She frowned when she saw him approach a woman. Her mind flashed back to when she had first seen him. The woman running, him chasing her.... in the park.... his fist ripping through her stomach.... her scream. She hissed and slipped off the ledge, landing on the ground with a slight thud. Then she ran, she ran to the park, across the street and to where Abraham stood near her, that's when she heard his question. Then she understood and the knot inside her slowly unravelled.

She steered to the right and swung up into the branches of a nearby Oak. She silently hoped she had not been seen, or sensed, she didn't want to ruin his questing. But she did keep an eye on what would happen next. He was her one link to her father..... she would keep him alive, at least for now....

Vykariel turned, slowly, on the surface, she seemed to be as smooth and calm as the lakes surface. But inside she was shaken. She hadn't expected such a rude awakening from her thoughts, and the man that stood before wasn't human. Far from it. She sniffed at the air infront of her. 'Hmm, Demon,' she thought. 'But why here?'

She looked at him through her glasses, hoping he couldn't see the doubt in her eyes through them.

"Merely enjoying the scenery," she said with a wry smile.

She heard the soft sound of a branch cracking, but dismissed it as the creatures who lived in the forest. She gave her full attention back to the demon.

"What is a demon like yourself doing here? I doubt you are here to feed the ducks..."

I looked at her and knew that there was something different about her but I could not place what it was and I did not want to ask her as I needed her to be able to trust me, at least for the time being.

"You know that I am a demon, you can sense that and the reason I came here was to talk to you and see if you will either help me or be an enemy of mine because I could use all the friends in this world as I have far too many enemies."

I took a step away from her and looked at her face, trying to read what was there and wondering what was going through her head. I wanted to lower my power but I knew that I had to keep it flowing through me just in case she did attack me.

Vykariel looked at the man with an incredulous look in her eyes. Thankfully he couldn't see that due to her glasses. At the moment, she didn't care. A demon. Asking to be friends? What was he playing at?!

She studdied him intently for a moment and took two steps closer. She lowered her sunglasses just enough for the light to reflect off them. She replaced them and then smiled and extended her hand.

"I could use some company myself," she said with a wry smile. "My name is Vykariel."

I took her hand and looked at the reflection that was in her glasses. I knew what she must be thinking, a demon such as myself wanting to be friends with a human, even a human that was different from everyone else. I knew what she was going through, what it was like to be in a world full of humans when she was not.

In that aspect I wanted to be friends with her just so that she would have someone else in this world, someone that she might be about to talk to. It was then at I remembered about Wraith and wonder what it would be like if she knew that I was out here; if she would think that I was here to kill this woman.

It was then that I caughth the sense of her and smiled as I took the woman's hand in my own.

"I know that you do not trust me, you know what I am and you know what my kind is capable of but I ask that you allow me to help you in any way that I can as I know what it is like to live in a world that does not want you in it."

Before she knew what was happening I pulled her close to me, wrapped my arms around her and said, "This will feel strange." a second before we both disappeared in a shimmer of light.

As soon as we reappeared, on the same rooftop that I had talked to Wraith I turned to Vykariel.

"I am sorry for that but if we need to talk I thought it best to do it here; alone."

Vykariel staggered slightly on the roof. She shook her head, trying to banish the ringing from her ears. "That was by far the strangest feeling I've ever experienced," she said to the man. Although it was a strange sensation, she wished she could travel like that: particles of her being flowing through the air, to re-assemble at another place. It must be amazing. She gave a wry smile. All she could do was run.

She looked up at the man. "I didn't catch your name," she said, remembering. "But regardless, I do appreciate your offer of friendship - as long as you aren't out to kill me when you tire of me..." she commented with a smirk.

Wraith caught her own hiss as it left her lips when he wrapped his arms around the stranger. She tilted her head and a low growl emitted before her when they suddenly shimmered and disappeared. She jumped then from her perch, landing softly on the ground.

She lifted her face, scenting slightly as she looked for his energy path. She found it and frowned, he had gone a rather long way away this time. She stepped to where he had been a few minutes earlier and then was about to follow but she caught something in the air around her. A sense of warning. A sense of something not wanting her to come near.

She suddenly understood. He didn't want her anywhere near him right now. She hissed again and turned on her heel. She would follow him anyway. She needed him right now, she needed the one who would inevitably hunt him. She set off at a brisk pace, tracing his energy in the air, following the path he left for her...

As she exited the park, she didn't see the dark shape detach itself from the shadows. She didn't see as it came hurtling around the corner, in broad view of all humans. She didn't see a ball of pure energy come towards her from the outflung hands of the mystery shape. But she did hear it, the wailing sound rending the air with its pure misery of being.

She turned, throwing up her hands up in an ineffectual human guesture of self preservation. Her human side of her self froze as her demon side spurred into action. She had been off guard, as she dodged to the side and unsheathed her claws to rip into the mystery attacker's soft flesh, she growled a curse to Abraham for distracting her...

I looked at her and wanted to say something to her but it was then that I remembered the question that she had asked of me, the question that I could never give her and answer to.

"I will not give you my name as it would mean that you would have power over me. I will not give you that."

I knew that I had left Wraith by herself but I did not care at the moment, as much as it pained me to think so. I knew that I could go back to her, to see if she was alright but I knew that she was more than capable of taking care of herself and that I could leave her by herself. I walked to the edge of the roof and looked at her, "I will not kill you unless you give me reason to as I have finished that lifestyle."

Vykariel nodded and shrugged. "Well, I'll just have to call you 'Demon' then." She kicked at a loose tile on the roof, watching it fall over the edge and smash on the concrete. "What did you mean by what you said, when you said you had finished that lifestyle?"

I stood there and looked at her, seeing that she was getting a little agitated by by what was going on and what I was talking about.

"I mean that I do not kill mortals, humans anymore. I am sick of that situation."

I wanted to tell her more but I knew that if I did then I would be putting her in trouble and that was the last thing that I wanted to do. I wanted nothing more than to disappear from this place so that the only person that was in trouble was me but I knew how pathetic that would be as I could not things like this by myself, no matter how powerful I was.

I moved slowly to the edge of the building and looked down at the mortals walking around down below; going about their lives, not even knowing what else their was in this world, what could kill them without their knowledge. I moved towards Vykariel, took her hand in mine and without saying a word disappeared in a shimmer to reappear in the alley down below.

"Follow me. I wanted to show you why I do not kill mortals anymore."

I walked out of the alley then turned and looked at her, wondering what she was thinking.

Vykariel's head spun as the demon disappeared and then reappeared with her again, still holding her hand. She staggered a little, but regained her balance quicker then last time. At least she wasn't on a roof. Not that the fall would kill her, just being up high reminded her of a bad time in her life.

She looked at the demon. He wanted to show her what made him stop killing people. She was confused. Could you blame her? A demon. Feeling benevolent. Something very dramatic had to have happened to make him stop killing humans. She was a little apprehensive as to what he was going to show her, but for some strange reason she trusted him. She had no idea why. Maybe it was because he was like her. No one trusted her kind. No one trusted his kind either. They were united in that aspect.

She nodded to him and gave a slight smile, still holding onto his hand, her feet still tingling and feeling very unsteady. "Well, that wasn't as bad as I expected - the second time anyway," she added. "What is it you wanted to show me?"

I did not want to talk to her, I just took her hand and walked down the footpath. As I walked down the footpath I watched every mortal, watching every emotion that was on their faces and I knew that this was why I would not kill these mortals anymore. I then stopped and turned to Vykariel, looking into her eyes.

"What do you see where you look at these mortals around you? Do you see why I cannot kill them, why I would do anything to protect them?"

Wraith screamed in agony as his sword ripped through the tender flesh of her left shoulder. She roared in anger and she dimly registered the screaming humans around her, running around like ants suddenly caught in the rain. Their panicked cries echoed hollowly in her head as she raised a claw tipped hand and slashed downward, aiming for the soft flesh that covered his heart.

She realised then, that this may very well be her last fight. That this demon may have caught the upper hand too fast… She growled low in her throat, a testament to her demon heritage. “Not yet, you filthy demon!” she screamed and slashed forward, but before her enraged attack could hit its intended target he grinned. She couldn’t believe it; he actually had the nerve to grin in her face!

Then she seemed to hit what felt like a brick wall. At first she didn’t realise what had happened. It was only when she came to after hitting the tarmac with the force of that likened to the fall of from a forty storey building did she realise that the dirty bastard had a shield. A strong shield.

“Damn,” she muttered to herself as she spat out a thick dark red spurt of blood that had accumulated when she had bitten her tongue as her body registered the impact, not to mention the pain. “You arsehole!” she screamed at her grinning attacker. He didn’t make a move, didn’t even blink. He just stood there, grinning like a loon. Wraith would have almost believed his ploy, if it hadn’t have been for the fact that the cunning bastard was using what could have possibly been the strongest shield she had ever encountered.

She spat more of the dark red liquid that had mixed with her saliva out, this time in his direction. She snarled and unsheathed her claws for a final run at him, her earlier rage and power usage with Abraham had weakened her considerably. This was the last of her strength, after this, there would be nothing left. They had been fighting for well over fifteen minutes after all.

Wraith staggered to her feet, keeping her eyes on her ‘victim’ as she now considered him. With a scream of utter rage and hatred she ran full tilt at him, only cutting to the side at the last minute and sweeping her leg out under him. The stronger the shield, the less time one could hold it. Lucky she had stalled for long enough for his energy to run out. He went down on his face with a surprised grunt. She quickly turned and jumped on him, her claw once again aimed for his heart, except this time she was going to rip the thing out.

The one who called herself Wraith grunted in pain as the sword slid easily into her stomach, the force of his thrust as well as the effect of gravity on her own flung body was sufficient enough for the tip of the blade to penetrate the skin of her back, completely running her through. Her arms stretched upwards, her claws extended, ready for the killing blow. A brief surprised expression crossed her bloodied but otherwise rather hauntingly beautiful visage. The demon continued to grin. He slowly stood from beneath her, leaving the sword buried in her now prone body.

She fell forward to her knees, clutching the sword’s protruding hilt. She couldn’t believe it. ‘Mushrooms…mushrooms were my last meal. I didn’t even get to taste lobster’ were her unfortunate last thoughts. She coughed up some more blood; she seemed to have a lot of it to give to this particular demon. He continued to grin and then he gripped the pommel and pulled the blade back out, accompanied by a very generous gush of blood out of the now open wound. He rested the blade against the back of her neck, he grinned.
“A trophy,” was all that he said and raised the sword, but paused dramatically, he loved to prolong his victim’s pain, loved seeing their death throes. He quirked an eyebrow and laughed, “Any last words?”

Wraith was at a loss. She was about to die, as impossible as the immortal thinking side of her vanity thought it could be, she was about to die. Then she abruptly remembered something. A word, a single word. She closed her eyes tight, trying to shut out the pain and silently cried out the only thing that was on her mind now that she was teetering on the brink of death.
“Abraham!” …….

I stood there looking at Vykariel, wanting to know what was on her mind but it was then that I heard something in the back of my mind, something calling to me. I did not know what it was but it was then that I felt the pain that was attached to it and closed my eyes, shutting out everything but the person that was calling to me and it was then that I found her, it was Wraith and she was in serious pain. My eyes shot open and I looked at Vykariel then without saying a word disappeared in a shimmer, hoping that I was not too late to save Wraith.

As soon as I reappeared I saw that she was in serious trouble as she was lying on the ground in a pool of blood that was staining the sword the demon held in his hand. It was then that I saw the grin on his face and felt the shield that was around him although it was very much weakened and I knew that was because of Wraith. I looked at her for a moment and could feel her life slowly slipping away from her and knew that I would not let that happen so I closed my eyes and let my power level raise.

I saw him turn to look at me and watched as the grin slowly disappeared from his face while a smile appeared on my face. I moved slowly towards him and let an energy ball appear in right hand then looked at Wraith again. It was then that I heard him moving towards me and knew that he was ready for whatever attack I was going to throw at him but he did not knew what I was planning.

I saw as he brought up his sword, ready to strike at me with it and I poured more energy into the power ball in my hand. The grin reappeared on his face as he moved closer but before he could get close enough to me I threw the energy ball at him and watched as he deflected it with his sword, just as I knew that he would but I knew that he was distracted and moved before he knew what was going on, grabbed his sword and plunged it deep into his chest, watching the grin disappear on his face to be replaced my total shock.

It was then that I put my hand to his chest and fired an energy ball into it, just to feel it disappear beneath my hand.

The demon fell to the floor, the shocked expression locked on his face and I knew that I had done the one thing I did not want to do before I moved quickly over to Wraith and placed one hand under her head then slowly lifted it up off the ground. As soon as I did I could feel her life being drained from her body and knew that there was only one way to help her. I picked her up slowly and concentrated on the room that we had been in earlier then smiled when we reappeared in there a second later.

I placed her gingerly on the couch in the room and looked at her, not sure of what to do next but I knew that I had to do something or her life would end while I stood there. It was then that I knew what to do and placed my hands on her, directly over her wound then closed my eyes. I started to slowly let some of my energy flow into her body, hoping that it would work, hoping that it would heal her.
