Tara
She really thought he’d leave her … to her fate … to her own thoughts, but she had not figured on Captain Thompson’s persistence and stubborn pursuit of the truth.
"How long are you going to keep this up, Tara?”
She flinched under his direct gaze.
”I'm trying to give you a chance to prove yourself, and to me, why the Federation should take responsibility for its actions.”
She shook her head mutely.
He had her trapped. She had no idea why he couldn’t just … let this be …
”End this pointless masquerade of your feelings!"
The words cut her to the quick.
Without her anger, her rejection of any compassion, rejection of feeling itself, she was defenceless.
And if she were defenceless …
Her eyes luminous with unshed tears searched his.
Why did he insist on her opening up to him?
Did he actually care, for justice, for her … or was it the ultimate cruelty?
”You know how I feel … “
Her voice was barely audible.
”I’ve lost everyone … everything I care about … “
Her eyes lowered to focus somewhere on the sheet that covered her feet as his hands remained on the bed either side of her.
”You keep asking me why I … why I did what I did …. “
She shrugged and raised her eyes to his.
”The answer’s simple … revenge … ‘cos it was the only thing I could do …
I thought it would make it better … so it all hurt less … but it didn’t … it just made everything so much worse … “
Tara rubbed at her eyes in an attempt to prevent the tears.
Perhaps it did matter to her what this man thought of her … but there was no real reason to relive memories she had made such an effort to suppress.
Again the hand ran to lace through her hair as she leaned, cradling her head on one side as she watched the man in front of her.
”If it makes any difference to you … I’ll answer your questions … “
She told him wearily.
” … but … it won’t make any difference to …. this … to me ... to how I feel ... “
To her mind, it no longer mattered what was said anymore.
