"Space Spiders"

December 2028:
The object was first detected in July of 2026 as it was passing by Saturn. Weeks of calculations by astronomers determined that it could pass within 100,000 miles of Earth, less than half the distance from the planet to the Moon.
The Press ran with the story for a couple of days before returning to the same shit, different day news they usually carried: conflicts, tornadoes, rising gas prices, and an increasingly more unpopular President incessantly posting his rambling thoughts on social media.
Then, the object began slowing down. Natural astronomical objects just ... don't ... do ... that. Extraterrestrial spacecraft do, though.
Suddenly, the object and the response to it by the world's populations and their respective governments was the only news.
Fear erupted around the globe, with panic buying and hoarding followed by looting, rioting, arson, and more. Martial law was declared in more countries, provinces, states, and cities than not, and in some places, it became a permanent part of life.
The world's most powerful countries discussed a United response for months and yet never reached one. Some wanted to nuke the spaceship before it reached Earth. Others wanted to meet our extraterrestrial neighbors.
In the end, no preemptive actions were taken. The alien spacecraft's speed continued to decrease, and its course continued to alter slightly, bringing it toward Earth.
Then a new detail emerged: the object had divided into dozens of smaller ships, all approaching Earth with altered courses and speeds. The result was that when they finally entered Earth's atmosphere, they did so over each of the continents, with the exception of Antarctica.
Again, once they'd entered the atmosphere, these smaller ships divided. Hundreds of them streaked across the sky, falling to strike the ground hard. They sent up massive clouds of dust, dirt, and debris, leaving behind craters as big as a football stadium.
And out came the Spiders.
Oh, these weren't Earth spiders. They looked like a Granddaddy Long Legs on steroids: a single spherical body part the size of an apple with 8 jointed legs, each a foot long.
And they didn't act like Earth spiders either. They moved together as a pack at up to 10 mph, chasing down, surrounding, attacking, biting and poisoning, and then eating any warm blooded animal they detected.
Particularly Human Beings!
