Sprained Ankles fucking SUUUUUUUCK

I messed up my ankle for the first time this winter on some ice. Around here you see ice and walk across it, unless it is glazed ice with water on it. . . yea learned my lesson.

Anyway, I can still feel the injury now and then. At the time of the injury I could not walk on it without assistance. I had to crawl to the bathroom, after my six year old son made the recommendation, as I tried to hop and shuffle there.

I ended up with BioSkin cast. Best thing since the invention of the wheel and sliced cheese. I was suppose to use crutches but after one day of slipping around on them, I decided I was safer to walk slowly and with purpose than to risk another fall.

Ice and compression are your friend. The BioSkin I have did wonders for the compression. Here is the model I ended up with. http://www.bioskin.com/Trilok-Ankle-Control-Brace.html

I wore that thing for about 3 months and it rocked. I got a size large than what they called for, since it was winter here and I really needed to have a sock on the foot, not over the brace.

Yeah It's a 60$ brace but well worth it. I keep it around in case I might do something that might be risky for the ankle.

Apparently there are 3 or 4 level of ankle sprains and with my heal time (still going through it) I had the worse level.

The other thing that you need to know is once you sprain an ankle it is more susceptible to injury in the future. I try to rehab and strengthen it when I go to the gym.

Good luck!

Got a cast already, thank you though!

And yeah, I know a previous injury makes future injuries more likely...this is the 3rd time I've sprained this ankle in my almost-26 years of living. :/

Yeah, but if you actually go to physio and do what they say to do you're okay because you build the muscles back up the right way. I haven't hurt my ankle since.

At the time I was more concerned about the fact that there was now a hole in my Jones New York suit pants then I was about my ankle. Then it started to swell and I knew it was fkd up.

When I went to the physio lady she was pulling it around and everything was fine until she pulled this one way and there was this KLUNK sound/feel and my ankle went way father than it should.

So I had to try to balance on this board with a half sphere off centre on the bottom while I tipped back and forth, and do IOTs and practice standing on one leg. And lift some weights too. I actually got to be okay on the board - so then I had to use a smaller half sphere.

And afterwards they'd do ultrasound treatment that helps it to get better and takes away the pain. Really, it's worth it.

Of course here, it was $5 a visit.

Lucky! I have yet to meet a PT who was worth a damn.

I tore ligaments. Muscle strength in an ankle has jack to do with a sprain, sweetie.
Oooo... I thought it was a muscle sprain, too. Must have missed something. Ligament pulls/sprains/tears are *much* worse.

Ummm, don't worry about any hair that falls out, or a sudden tendency to tan really really quickly...

Mister said "I will never forget that bone-chilling CRUNCH! when you rolled it."

A sprain isn't about muscles. The definition according to the doctors is when "The ligaments in a joint are stretched beyond their normal capacity, and possibly torn." So anytime someone says "Sprain" they mean ligaments rather than muscles.

It bruised really badly, which surprised the hell out of me, since the last two times I sprained it, it didn't bruise as badly. It looks like I'm smuggling a purple tennis ball under my ankle. :/

The GOOD news is that I went to the salon, got my nails did (bright blood red polish, looks awesome) and got 5 inches cut off my hair, and put in blonde highlights!! 5 inches sounds like a lot, but my hair was 31 inches long from the crown. It was down to my ass, now it's cut up to my waist.

It looks REALLY pretty and different. So it hasn't been all bad.

*only here to leave cyber snuggles for satin*

*snuggles!* Yay!

Glad you got to do the salon thingie. Feeling prettied up often leads to feeling *better,* at least for all the female folks I've known, and a lot of the male types, too. Psychological lift, or something. Dunno about that for me - I've never been pretty.

I guess I've never sprained anything, though I've managed at various times to strain and tear muscles. Screwin' around with ligaments and tendons, though, not something I want to get into. Not mine, anyway. I understand they're harder/slower to heal, and I have enough issues with my back and joints (hips, knees) without getting into that stuff.

It -does- take longer to heal, for some reason. I'm not really sure why, but once they do heal, they're never really the same anymore. :(

Knee problems are such a bitch! My dad blew out his knee several years ago and he can't really walk anymore because of it.

That was the KLUNK part. It was over 10 years ago so I'm trying to remember what they did about that...it was braced for a while and I took Vioxx (that tells you how long ago it was), then it started swelling again and I was sent to a PT and found out that not everything had healed well. Before I went into the gym bit there were just ultrasound treatments and something else to do with the back of my heel, but I just don't remember it all. And I had to get therapeutic orthotics to help with my arch too, but I think that was a by-the-way-your arches-have-collapsed thing. .

But now my point really holds. If you tore multiple ligaments, you should be going into a physiotherapist. Especially if you keep spraining it. There's something that isn't healing well, and you need to check on it.

Typically PT for a sprain involves range of motion (IOTs), balance and control (standing on one leg), muscle strengthening (lifting weights), and stretching. There's some information here.

that really sucks about your ankle! there is a product you can get at the health food store called arnica.. helps with bruising and swelling. you can get it in liquid or a lotion. (i believe). Doesnt smell good.. but works wounders!

Just ask a doctor before you start arnica. It is an anticoagulant like heparin and can be dangerous. I am not sure, but I think it can interact with other medications as well, even absorbed through the skin.
It does help bruising heal very fast. I make an herbal bruise balm and arnica is the main ingredient. My husband uses it all the time and it works wonders if applied within a few hours of the injury. It still helps if applied one or two days after.
I hope you get to feeling better Satindesire.

What Brioche is describing has nothing to do with strength. I have lost track of how many times I have sprained my ankles (and other assorted body parts), the right one has also suffered a flake fracture. I have had extensive physio, including many of the exercises Brioche described and I can attest to how effective and important they are to bring a joint back to full use and prevent future injury.

 my physioterrorist.

I've messed my ankles up so many times it's unreal. Just make sure you rest it, ice it and try and keep it moving as much as you can. Point your toes and pull your foot up towards you, it helps to keep it from getting stiff.
