Starspeaker IC (Closed for silvertongue217)

Jase didnt hang around shooting her a apologetic look before walking out. His anger burned inside of him a dull throb as he shook his head and moved down the halls.

"Bloody fool" Jase murmured shaking his head

"Hes only concerned for his troops" Samantha reminded him appearing beside him "he doesnt think your capable of leading them"

"Even at the cost of more people dying?" Jase said sighing and pulling off his jacket

"See this is returned to my quarters" He said thrusting it into a random ensigns arms. The ensign jumped in shock and after saying yes general many many MANY times hurried off to complete the task. Jase rolled up his sleeves turning to Samantha.

"Lets go see about getting you wired into the mainframe tell the empress I will be down there if she gets a free moment" Jase said to Samantha before heading to the bowels of the ship.

Vera watched out of the corner of her eye as Jase exited the room, his anger still rolling off him in bear tangible waves. She frowned to herself, feeling a little helpless when it came to assuaging his rage.

"I love you Jase," she sent the words down their mind link, "there is noone else in this galaxy I trust more to lead us to victory than you."

"So, what are your plans for the day?" Avery walked over to Vera , eyes dropping tk the barley concealed bulge of her belly beneath her dress.

"Off to see the old General first" Vera sighed, "I need to give him official notice of his treason trial. Would you like to come?" It felt odd to Vera, offering for Avery to accompany her on business. In the past they had only met in secure and private locations out of fear of discovery. Now here they were, out in the open.

"No. Thanks. I've seen enough of him to last me a life time," Avery said, shaking her head and turning to Boomer. "We will still we you for lunch?"

Vera nodded the affirmative before turning and leaving the room. She made her way to the brig, meeting Tomas outside before going in and facing her bastard uncle.

"Be careful Empress" One of the Gaurds said escorting her into the brig "hes been dangerous nothing bad so far but he did try and take a bite out of one of the mens ears a while back its why we have him in high security"

The guard walked over to the keypad keying it in and then raising his riffle as the doors hissed and unpressurized. Kept sealed in order to be vented at a moments notice state of the air plasma shielding moved down as the doors slowly opened.

The cell was tiny yet it seemed to be covered in a mold like substance. For a second the general could not be seen and then suddenly he was there having broken free of the mold like substance on the far wall.

"My darling niece" He said laughing his voice disembodied "we have been watching watching and waiting" He said cackling in pleasure.

"He he wasnt like this yesterday!" The guard said the gun snapping up as he stepped back "he was coughing but"

"We hid inside of him hid and watched planned the little rebellion against you!" The man who used to be her uncle cackled "and we spread our conversion turned the PEACe rebels against you"

The creature laughed running over to the door and slamming his fist on it causing it to flare and shock him back. Still he tried banging repeatedly until he fell on the floor smoking and near death.

"All the men on the asteroid belt... they are ours now run run Empress as fast as you can before our reach infects those twins of yours...."

The guard's words made Vera frown, her uncle had tried to bite a man's ear off? That was beyond concerning. He was caught, his resistance flattened, but she had never thought him so tactless or desperate. He was usually such a measured man, taking people down with his slow-burning rage.

Then the door opened and she stopped in her tracks. The cell was covered in a sheen of green dank something, the smell of it turned her stomach. She blinked trying to locate her uncle in the darkness, but then he moved forward, busting out from the mess on the walls.

His voice had a strange lilt to it, very unlike the last time she talked to him. The panic in the guards voice and the instinctive reaction of his gun raising set Vera on guard. She wondered how the cell got like that at all.

Then he spoke again. His voice scratched at her mind, his words eating away at her. The very sound repulsive enough to make her want to leave right then and there. It sounded like there were a thousand voices speaking through his body, as if they were all there in perfect harmony.

Vera's eyes widened as she listened to him.

"We hid inside of him hid and watched planned the little rebellion against you! And we spread our conversion turned the PEACe rebels against you"

Vera had trouble thinking of the man as her uncle. He was different now, Other, and as the creature before her ran forward and threw himself at the shields on the door Vera stepped back.

"All the men on the asteroid belt... they are ours now run run Empress as fast as you can before our reach infects those twins of yours...."

He fell to the floor and Vera could smell the smoke off him as his clothes burned at the electricity from the shields tore through his body. Her hand flew to her abdomen and her eyes widened.

Could it be?

Hive, in her ship?

She allowed herself no more than a split second of horror before she stepped back, slamming her hand on the control panel for the door and sealing it shut.

"Kryten!" She called, her mind whirring with all of the things she needed to do. "Seal off the brig cell now, isolate the life support systems, disconnect the electronics from the central support. Run a diagnostic on the cell, and then the entire ship. I need you to tell me if there are any more infections like the one in that cell. This is to be given emergency level priority."

She turned on her heel, exiting the cell bank and heading the guard station.

"I want three extra guards posted here, all of you are to be in environmentally sealed suits. No one, I repeat, no one is to enter or leave that cell. Do you understand me?" Vera snapped to the horrified guard beside her. He nodded mutely before going to his console and tapping in his orders.

"Frack! Sam, did you see that?" Vera thought, "Please do not merge or sync with Kryten in any way. Stay off the ship's systems. If the mothership is infected I do not want you to be at risk. Can you call an emergency meeting of the council and all senior officers. The Press Conference room should be large enough. I expect everyone there in five minutes, no excuses or delays."

Then, her hand still on her belly, her thoughts cast out for Jase, some of her concern and urgency escaping down their link.

"Jase, we have an emergency situation. I need you in the Press Conference room ASAP. It seems HIVE has come to us." She called to him.

"And Sam, please get me Starspeaker immediately."

"Affirmative. I'll send him right to the conference room." Sam's voice floated to Vera as she ran through the corridors.

Even if there were few people in the way, her dash to the conference room would take a good few minutes. Normally she was calm and collected on board, never letting any of her panic through. So it was that her run through the corridors drew a fair bit of attention. Dozens of concerned looks were cast her way but she ignored them. She kept going until she reached the conference room. She opened the door and dashed in, relieved to see Starspeaker waiting for her.

"Samantha has shown me what you saw," he said, voice grave and expression even more so, "Hive has indeed come t

"Okay we are just about done" Jase murmured his shirt off grease on his chest as he began to push the core that made up Samantha into the ship. He grunted with the effort moving it into place just as.....

"STOP" Samantha yelled appearing beside him "Jase we have an emergency situation!"

Before Jase could ask what Vera was reaching out her thoughts panicked and jumbled. Jase shot up grabbing his revolver and turning to Samantha with wide eyes.

Whatever this was it was serious

"Whats going on?" Jase snapped turning to look at her "Show me now!"

And Samantha did showing him the uncle and what Vera had been witness to. Jase froze his entire body going rigid as her uncles words connected in his brain.

"All the men on the asteroid belt... they are ours now run run Empress as fast as you can before our reach infects those twins of yours...."

"We need to begin quarantine protocols Empress" Jase said to her over COMS not moving to her location and instead going to the medical area "every one that touched him or had contact with him needs to go into lockdown now Boomer Avery I need you in medical now" He snapped going in and clearing every one out.

"I am locking down medical as per protocols all of the guards who interacted with him our to join us" Jase snapped going over to the computer and typing in the passcode to begin quarantine procedures "Empress you are to stay with starspeaker see if he and his people had any way of detecting these lifeforms inside of us.

"And you are not by any circumstances allowed to come and see me"

Vera should have thought of the quarantine protocol. She cursed internally as Jase set everything up, she made a note of keeping her mind link to him completely open so she could eavesdrop on what he was doing.

And then, when he spoke to her, reality hit. Hard.

There was a chance he could have been infected. He, Avery and Boomer had gone on that mission into her uncle's ship. They had carried him out and been on a two day flight with him back to the mothership. Her heart skipped a beat, worry and concern flooding her, but she stamped it down. Right now there were more important things to do than fret about what she couldn't control.

"Stay safe Jase, I love you," She said, before returning her attention to Starspeaker.

"The General was infected," Starspeaker confirmed, "And it is entirely possible that anyone he has come into contact with is infected too," this last part was said in an apologetic tone.

"Is there any way to tell if someone is infected?" Vera asked, putting a hand on the back of a nearby chair.

"Yes. We discovered it too late. We kept taking scan after scan, our researchers using our best technology to try to identify it. In the end, it turns out you need to go backwards. Blood tests. Not blood scans, or electronic analysis. Hive discovered how to shield their microbodies against modern technology, cloak it against scanning. Blood needs to be drawn from the subjects and analysed through a microscope. Not one with an electronic viewer, you have to use one with a proper eyepiece. Do you have those?"

Vera took all the information, feeding it down the communication line to Jase. She was so pleased that they would be able to detect it, but those sorts of microscopes were old technology, something that had place in a museum, not an intergalactic mothership.

"Jase? Do you happen to have any of those old microscopes lying around?" She asked, "If not we will have to send down to the planet for one. I know they have a museum down there somewhere that will have one. We can send a shuttle down, but it will take two hours at least."

Two hours that would be wasted trying to diagnose them, to hours more that Hive would have sink their tendrils into their bodies. The blood analysis alone was an arduous process.

"Actually, on second thoughts, Sam I want you to send an urgent request to the pathologists on the planet below and have them come up here immediately. I also want our best doctors on the team on it. "

"And," Vera said out loud, turning to Starspeaker, "Once we have discovered whether or not they are infected..." She trailed off and Starspeaker grimaced.

"That was something we had yet to perfect. As you saw, electricity subdued the Hive within your uncle, but it also had a terrible effect on his body. Our experiments led us to believe that enough electric current would destroy the infection. But whether it would destroy the host as well... well, that was out of our control."

"And the infection, does it have a point of origin? Or does it just take over everything?"

"It moves in the bloodstream," Starspeaker said, "which is why that is how you diagnose it. For some reason it seems that it has to take over and infect all other parts of the body before it can get to the brainstem. If it makes it there, then you have no hope of saving the host. Your uncle? He is too far gone."

Vera was filled with horror at the thought of the infection, and hoped dearly that if anyone was infected, they would be able to catch it early enough to save them. She passed Starspeaker's information onto Kryten and had him write off a brief and send it right away to their top medical and scientific specialists. She knew they had ways of isolating their electric charges, but she wondered if it would be fine enough to manage eradicating the infection while saving the host.

The door opened and people started trickling in for the emergency meeting. Starspeaker pulled Vera aside, lowering his voice and catching her eyes with a look of concern.

"Chancellor, your uncle... Well, if I were to guess at how long ago he had been infected... I would say six months at least."

Vera's eyebrows furrowed.

"But we only found you around two months ago," She said.

"Yes," Starspeaker nodded with a grim expression, "It is a cause for concern."

"you and I both know what that means" Jase thought to Vera and Samantha over their mental link "this invasion was happening before we even stumbled upon it"

"It makes sense" Samantha said appearing next to Vera "your uncle was the one who logged the intial find right? The one that sent you on the quest for the artifact? He must have been following subliminal programming"

"I concur" Jase said as Boomer and Avery both stepped through the airlock. Jase quickly swept his eyes over the group making sure every one was accounted for.

"I am sealing the medical wing" Jase said activating general COMS throughout the ship "from this time forward the only one to come near the medical area are doctors in sealed suits"

"You know we really have to get Starspeaker hooked up for our mind link" Samantha said frowning "or give him some way he can speak to all three of us"

"I'll deal with that after I am cleared of health" Jase said grabbing Boomer and leading him over to the syringe "I need every ones blood" He called out waving at them to form a line.

Vera let out a heavy sigh as Jase went about his business, deeply concerned about what was going on. Though she didn't have time to fret about it, as she had her own matters to attend to.

The meeting was a long one, and by the time it ended Vera was feeling faint from the exhaustion of it all and from missing lunch. Thankfully, Samantha had thought ahead and had food ready and waiting for her when it was over.

The PEACe councillors and leaders had been shocked. They had though, just like Vera, that they were safe in this part of space. That Hive's reach was still grasping for the outer rim of space. But they had all been wrong, and now they needed to take swift and decisive action.

Starspeaker's knowledge and input was invaluable, and the leaders were finally taking him seriously now. With his assistance, they had hammered out a plan to quarantine the asteroid base and any remaining PEACe rebel ships. Given possibly enormous scope of the situation they also agreed that, after the ships were quaranteened, they would need to roll out a blood testing and treatment scheme. Though they needed to perfect the treatment first.

The council representatives, including those that came over from the Coalition of Alien species, had all offered their best scientists and doctors to help further the cause.

So, even though it was an intense meeting, they had worked out some form of plan. But that was't enough to soothe Vera's concerns. They still had so much to do, and she and Jase had been too busy to touch base about their progress. So, as she settled down at their dining table, alone except for the twins she was carrying, she cast her mind out to Sam and Jase.

"Jase- how are things going?" She asked, barely able to stomach her food.

"Its going about as well as you would expect" Jase said sighing and leaning back "I got every ones blood and right now im trying to cobble together some kind of old fashion Microscope unfortunately we just dont have those kind of parts any more"

"The scientist you requested should be here soon" Samantha said appearing next to Vera concern evident and apparent on her face "They cant get here bloody fast enough"

"While were waiting I think we should sent a scout ship to the asteroid base" Jase said watching as Avery and Boomer curled up together and feeling a pain in his heart "If what he said is true it could be a problem for us its closer to the core worlds strategically it makes a bad position for us"

"We can handle it" Samantha said shooting Vera a concerened look "you just worry about-"

"My maybe impending death?" Jase snorted "I would rather not Vera baby we need to contain that infection before they use it to spread their infection and corruption and gain an even larger army then they already have"

"A ship has already been sent out to scout the area and set up an exclusion zone. When we hear back from them we will set our plan," Vera said with a sigh, wanting nothing more than to kiss Jase and hold him close.

"How are Avery and Boomer going? Are they-" she was about to finish her sentence when the door to her chambers burst open and a very irate looking Ashlynn walked in.

"Anyone would think you didn't want to get married!" She harped obliviously, "You were supposed to have a dress fitting three hours ago- hoe on earth do you expect-" Ashlynn froze then, looking at Vera for the first time and gasping. "Chancellor? What happened?"

"We've had a... Situation. Jase is in quarantine. We aren't sure how long it will be before he gets out," Vera said, not adding her fear that he might not get out I to her statement. That would make it too real. Too hard to process.

"What situation?" Ashlynn's eyes narrowed and Vera rolled her own.

"Nothing in your clearance range at the moment. Though we will let you know when he gets out."

"But the wedding..."

Vera sighed.

"I just don't know Ashlynn..."

Ashlynn stood silent for a moment, but then her expression hardened.

"Well, luckily for you the dressmaker decided to hang around. I will bring them in now. If Jase gets out in time you'll need your dress to fit."

"By the stars she's a handful," Vera said to Jase through their connection.

She submitted to Ashlynn then, because she had done all she could about Hive in that moment, and because it allowed her the small hope that Jase would be out soon.

"Knowing her she will have us marry in this bubble if I dont get out soon" Jase murmured unable to stop the snort from coming out of his mouth.

"As soon as your done Empress the scientist are coming aboard" Samantha said appearing as the dress makers worked around her.

"Go ahead and send them in" Jase said collecting the bottles of blood "please tell me they were able to find a microscope"

"Yes though there unsure of how exactly you work it so this should be interesting" Samantha said amused despite herself.

"har har har" Jase grumbled rolling his eyes. Minutes later the scientist came in wearing full hazmat gear. JAse made the introductions and chatted with them for a few seconds before they took the blood and went to go check it.

"Well then," Vera thought to Jase with a smile, "You'd better get the hell out of there ASAP, Because I don't want to have our wedding night with the air lock door between us."

She was relieved to hear the scientists and doctors had arrived, and only hoped they would figure out their testing procedures soon. She wanted Jase back.

~*~

Two hours later Vera's dress fitting was finished and she was seated in her office with Tomas. The dressmaker's eyes had widened when they had seen Vera's stomach; clearly with child. They had spluttered assurances that word would go no further than them, and Vera gritted her teeth, unhappy with just how many people were finding out their news before she and Jase made the official announcement. Earlier that day she had been relieved to know they would release the statement the following evening, but now all of that was up in the air. Though that didn't bother her nearly as much as the thought of Jase not getting out of quarantine. Her mind concocted a horrible image of him in her uncle's place, and she had to stop angry tears from coming to her eyes.

Her uncle was the subject of her meeting with Tomas. He hadn't survived the electrical charge. Vera was horrified, but part of her was relieved that she wouldn't have to sentence him to death. He was an evil fracker, though now she didn't know how much of that was him and how much was Hive. How long had that creature been multiplying inside him? Eating away at him? She shuddered at the thought and then concentrated on their discussion.

The next two hours were their own version of hell

The scientist went to work right away and began testing their blood. Of course this was archaic in nature and the scientist had never performed such test before. It meant that they were all sitting and waiting for either good news of bad news.

And then finally the news came halfway through the night

"There clear" Samantha said relief evident in her voice as she appeared next to Vera "none of them were infected" She said her body tone saying she would hug her if she could.

Going to bed alone that night was the hardest thing Vera had ever had to do. Samantha had given her regular updates on the progress (or lack there of), but it did little to assuage her concern.

Vera had laid on their bed for hours, tossing and turning, knowing she should sleep but unable to. Too many thoughts about too many things were racing through her mind. Eventually though, her exhaustion took her body and she fell into a light sleep.

~*~

Sam's voice broke through Vera's mind and she opened her eyes, rubbing the sleep from them.

"Huh?" She asked, looking up at the gleeful projection.

"They're clear! All of them!" Samantha repeated, a grin on her face, her eyes sparkling with relief. Vera let out a heavy sigh and relaxed into the bed. Jase was fine. And Avery and Boomer too. All of them. This was more than she had dared to hope for.

"Oh, thank frack!" She said, sitting up and looking around.

"Jase?" Vera cast out, an inexplicable sense of relief and joy welling through her, "Where are you?" She slipped out of bed then, wanting to go and meet him, unwilling to let a moment between them be wasted by her sitting around.

Jase smiled hearing the relief clear even through the mental link they shared.

"for lack of a better word getting deloused" Jase said standing naked with the other men who had possibly been infected. While their blood was clean and as far as the scientist could tell they were not infected Jase insisted on following the full quarantine procedure. They would all be hosed down and their blood checked again before they would allowed out and back into the ship.

"This wont be done until early tomorrow morning my love" Jase told her turning and shivering at another blast of spray "go back to bed and i shall see you in the morning"

He turned moving towards the lead scientist a woman who Samantha said was named Elizabeth Crane.

"Dr. Crane" Jase said nodding his head "A word please"

"Yes general?" Dr. Crane asked turning and raising an eyebrow at his nakedness.

"after your done here if you could go to the cell where the specimen died and take a look I would really appreciate it" Jase said "its not like any thing we have ever seen or that has been catalogued"

"My team are setting up a HAZMAT room as we speak" Dr. Crane said nodding "Once we figure out what we are dealing with you shall be the first to know you and the Empress"

Even though Vera was disappointed that she would have to wait to see Jase, she was still pleased that they had received the all clear. She crawled back into bed with a heavy sigh, her hand running over the cold sheets on Jase's side of the bed. Her eyes fluttered closed and her breathing slowed as sleep took her, but before she submitted she sent one last thought through;

"Wake me the instant you get back Jase," she told him, "I love you."

She had time for one more yawn before she settled into the bed and fell fast asleep.

Jase was finally processed out with the others around four AM galactic standard time. They were given a clean bill of health, and the good Doctor was already at work setting up shop and analyzing the remains of Vera's uncle.

"Vera wanted you to wake her up when you got back" Samantha said appearing as soon as Jase walked out of the medical wing.

"No time" Jase said shaking his head and turning to Boomer "its already the start of a new day and we have work to do"

Boomer glanced at Avery frowning "but we have been up all night"

"Uh huh and we are one day closer to our ship out date" Jase remarked narrowing his eyes "And now we know more about the enemy then we did before we need to make some calls conscript and draft from the colleges any one who knows how to test blood work as well we need to focus on getting more microscopes reach out to our distribution centers"

Boomer sighed and began taking notes walking away from Avery as Jase moved through the ship. The early morning was spent making the plans for a scientist or at least some one ABLE to do a blood test was on each ship. Jase spent the rest of the morning ordering the new microscopes and slamming down cup after cup of coffee has he tackled the pile of work on his desk with renewed vigor.

When Vera woke in the morning and noticed Jase wasn't there panic flooded through her. Sam appeared beside the bed, her hands out, and her best negotiator face on.

"Woah, calm down,he is fine! He got through at four in the morning and decided there was no point sleeping. He is safely tucked away in his office with a pile of work." Samantha said.

Vera sat up and frowned.

"Why didn't you wake me?" Vera asked.

Sam cocked an eyebrow, her expression speaking for her.

"Fine," Vera snatched a cracker of her bedside unit and got out of bed. She made quick work of getting ready for her day. She ordered some breakfast to be taken to Jase's office, and she went to join him there.

She was stopped in their sitting room though. Ashlynn was standing there with a bright smile, almost bouncing on the balls of her feet.

"Morning Chancellor! The General is out, so looks like this thing is on! Your dress should be ready in an hour and we have a shuttle booked to take you and the General planet side this afternoon! Feeling excited? Ready for it?" The words gushed out and Vera bit the inside of her lip, not sure what to tell the poor girl.

"I will need to speak to the General, Ashlynn, there is a lot of important work to be done at the moment..."

"Like getting married and rallying a universe behind you?"

Vera sighed.

"I will talk to him," she promised, shaking her head.

"You have someone booked in to do your hair at two this afternoon! I'll see you there!" Ashlynn called after her retreating back.

Vera made her way to Jase's office. She lightly knocked kn the door before going in. When it slid open she was flooded with relief at the sight of him.

"Morning," she said softly, walking over and sliding into the seat opposite him.

"morning" He said looking up and shooting her a tired smile from beyond his mountain of paperwork.

"Sorry" He said leaning in and giving her a quick kiss "I wasnt trying to ignore you but to much happened last night and was learned"

He got up nodding at the display on his wall "I went ahead and ordered the microscopes with any luck we can install them onto all of our ships that way every one can be tested"

"I also took the liberty of conscripting from the medical institutes" Jase explained turning "were going to be opening a battle hospital of sorts and training recruits with medical knowledge so we can test and look out for our own people"

"The scout ship to the asteroid is set to report in an hour" He said sighing and running a finger through his hair tiredly "I doubt we will find any thing good there"

Vera took the kiss gratefully and then settled in, listening to Jase and watching him keenly. He was all she could ever need in a husband and general and more. She reached out, taking his hand and holding it in her own, forcing him to still for a few precious moments.

"Well done Jase, you are doing everything you can," she said with a proud smile. "Now I know you're not going to want to hear this, but you need to rest. I know there is a lot of work to do, but I can practically feel the tension in you rising. If you don't take care of yourself soon, you will become your own worst enemy. It is hard, yes, finding and justifying it. But if there is one thing I've learned in my role it is when to take a step back. Just a couple of hours Jase. My schedule has cleared for this morning, tell me what your plans are and I will take over." Vera offered.

There was a knock at the door and a guy entered, carrying their tray of breakfast. He set it on the table, giving their clasped hands an amused look, before leaving.

"no time" Jase said shaking his head but going over to the table to eat "its not the first time I have worked 24 hours and it wont be the last"

He uncovered their food and pulled out her chair for her "besides were meant to get married tonight are we not?" Jase reminded her sitting down himself.

"And on top of that theirs the war council meeting and the news of what awaits us at the asteroid base" He said taking a bite of his food and leaning back to watch her.

"you look lovely by the way" he said smirking lightly.

"How long did it take you to get to the asteroid base and back?" Vera asked, "It will be a couple of days before we get anything from them." Vera looked at Jase and smiled softly, "If you won't rest now, please promise me you will soon. Burn out is a bitch to cone back from." Vera said, concern in her eyes and voice.

"I was being more careful if you recall" Jase said shaking his head "at the Falcon isnt the fastest ship in the solar system"

He turned to her smiling "I will relax tonight after I fuck my new wife into wedded bliss" He told her simply coming over grabbing her and picking her up before kissing her deeply.

"Dont worry about me" Jase said leaning in to kiss her deeply "I love you and were going to get through this"

Vera groaned into his kiss, the promise of him fucking her into wedded bliss thrumming through her veins.

"But if you fall asleep while fucking me..." She warned, pulling away from him with wink and a grin. She kissed him harder, arms wrapping around him and holding him close. When their kiss next broke she rested her forehead against his and smiled, letting out a content sigh. "I was so worried about you Jase..."

"I doubt I would ever be one of those men that fall asleep while making love to their wife!" Jase said in mock horror before kissing the top of her head.

"I have a feeling by the end of this way you and I will have had our fair share of near death experiences" Jase said sighing softly "If I thought I could I would have you in a safe place for the entirety of this bloody thing"
