Jaidyn Grant
AKA Jade

She had been driving for hours another day another state line between them. She had not had that much money when she started out but now it was getting close to gas for the car or food for her. She pulled off the road into the gravel and desert parking lot of a little hole in the wall of a diner and bar called Jake’s. She saw a few motorcycles cars and an RV that looked like it may have seen better days but was a well loved “Home” for someone. She parked the cuda and pulled her hair back into a loose ponytail trying to rein the slight natural curls in a little. Walking in she glanced around quickly scoping out the safest place to be to try to get a little bit to eat.

Once she sat down it was like lions closing on prey. Three of the bikers began closing in around her till the old woman behind the bar quickly cocked a fairly brutal looking tactical shotgun.

What have I told you about hunting in my diner boys… I will mail you back to Duke in a potato sack now back off or piss me off one more time Van… Joe you supposed to have a hold on these two but you seem to be encouraging them… now BACK OFF!

All three of them quickly went back to the pool table and saw nothing but the pool table after that. Clearly this woman was not someone they were willing to mess with even if they did out weigh her by at least a half a ton of fat leather and grease. Jaidyn nodded a silent thank you to her and quietly ordered a burger and fries. The old woman knew the look well of someone on the run and told her the meal was on the house and to stay as long as she wanted to. She also told her about the small town just a mile or two down the road and that she was welcome to stay a few days if she wanted perfectly safe and she could always use some help around the diner.

Jaidyn simply nodded to her saying something about thinking about it and then glancing quickly back towards the door hearing the spring snap the old wooden screen door closed sharply.

Mark had been driving for hours. His beat up old convertible was taking him wherever he pointed it, and right now it was due south. He had no idea where he was headed, but it was away from his past. He had to find a place that was isolated from the outside world for a while. He had to let things calm down.

He was from the wrong side of the tracks. However, he had been working for the wealthiest man in the county. He was also the mayor of the town..... And the local crime boss. Mark worked in the meat packing plant that the guy owned, but, unfortunately, had stumbled upon the mayor beating the shit out of someone who owed him money. Mark thought it was in his best interest to get out of town.

Mark drained his bank account of the little money that was in it and started driving. He was enjoying driving with the top down. It made him forget what he had to be worried about. He had to stay under the radar......making sure he couldn't be found. Eventually, they would stop looking for him.

He needed gas and something to drink. A bite of food might be good too. He noticed a greasy spoon with a filling station and decided to pull in. He pulled up to the pumps and got his gas. Then he parked the car next to a group of motorcycles. Seeing the bikes there told Mark that this was probably a place to avoid, but, at that point he really wasn't too concerned. He walked inside, letting the door close sharply behind him. He looked around...saw the bikers and a few others... He noticed the woman who looked out of place and wondered what she was doing here. He then walked over and sat at the counter. He nodded at the woman behind the counter. "May I have something cold to drink please. Sweet tea if you have it."

Sure do Sugar... that's the house wine around here.

The old woman smiled and went to get him a drink telling him about the town a mile or two down the road and how if he was in need of work or anything she could always use some help around the place. Pausing from talking to him long enough to keep an eye on the bikers as they left making sure they did not move closer to the young woman. Her hand hovering over that tactical shotgun just in case. Once they were gone and she had gotten him him tea she looked over to the girl.

They are harmless just a little dense at times when they see new people... just like a bunch puppies when company comes to visit.

So what else can I get for you two? I'm Jackie by the way.

Mark looked around as the woman behind the counter went to get his tea. He watched the bikers. He wasn't happy about their presence, but he knew about them before he came in. He was hoping it stayed civil, but he was not afraid to mix it up. He looked over at the woman in the booth and smiled at her, although she did not return the smile. He had a feeling that she was preoccupied with the bikers.

He heard the woman talking about the town down the road and the fact that she could use some help here at her place. When she brought the tea and asked if there was anything else she could get, he responded, "I bet you have the best burgers around. May I have one please."

After she put his burger order in he asked her, "so, Jackie, do you offer any stranger who comes in here alone a job, or do I just have a sign on my forehead that says that I am down on my luck and I really need to find some way to make some money." He smiled at her, letting her know that he was just trying to strike up a conversation.

Jackie smiled and motioned the young woman over.

Sugar... nobody comes to this town unless they are running from something. and when two cars like those pull in here with that much road dust on them and as nervous as a scalded cat drivers come in here... yeah I try to help 'em out. That's just our way around here even those boneheads that just walked out. Harmless really you just gotta know how to talk to them. We got the club this diner the mine or the mill.

The young woman walked over and sat down at the bar as well nodding to both of them with a weak smile.

Now I am not askin' what your tales are but just letting you know no one comes to this town unless they are running from something and most of the time... whatever it is can't find them. But if problems do find people here like I said we have the club and the mine.

Jackie gave a knowing smile and looked over.

So You two know who I am so whats your names?

The young woman looked over.

Jaidyn but most people just call me Jade.

Mark listened to Jackie talk. It was obvious that the two of them stuck out like sore thumbs. Neither he, nor the young woman looked like they had any business at all being in this diner or anywhere near this town. He was amazed that Jackie could read them so well, but he figured he wasn't the first person to come wandering along here and he most certainly would not be the last.

He nodded at Jaidyn as she sat at the counter. "It is very nice to meet you both. My name is Mark, and as you pointed out Jackie, I am not from around here. I appreciate how nice you are being. I did not mean to offend you with my previous comment. I was just trying to make some small talk. The car radio has been talking to me for hours and it was just nice to meet someone I could have a conversation with." He smiled at her. He wanted to make sure that he did not upset Jackie....after all, she had been very nice to him since he walked through the door.

No offence taken there sugar just telling you how this place is.

She made sure their drinks were all topped off and began to speak again.

There is a house I tend to rent out too if you two might be interested. NO worries about getting in each others way its a old two story just down the road a little ways. Used be be home but just got to be too big for just me but can't bring myself to sell it.

Jade just smiled a little truly tired of running and wanting a place to sleep that was not pay by night.

I would be okay with that I guess. I used to be a waitress so working here would be no problem in exchange if that is alright since money is a little tight right now.

The old woman smiled to her then looked to him.

Well what do ya say.
