State Visit to Japan

I was reading about Trump's visit to Japan the other day and buried amid the comments about Trump siting in a chair at the Honbasho he's attending (not surprising) I did find something I hadn't heard about..

I found it a little surprising that Japan named another aircraft carrier "Kaga." Even more surprising they invited a US President to tour it on a Memorial Day weekend.

Why would he? Our leaders almost certainly do not know the dates of foreign holidays. And besides it's highly doubtful he had anything to do with the planning. Since I'm sure they don't teach American holidays in school then it's highly unlikely that whoever was involved with putting things together had any idea it's a holiday here. A relatively minor one at that.

It's the job of whoever was involved with putting things together to either know these things or find out. It's the same reason we have a Chief of Protocol. It's their job to inform members of the administration what to do and not do when visiting foreign countries and meeting officials.
