I'm against numerous things my country's governments do, and I've appreciated the sanctuary that Sweden gave US deserters during the Vietnam War. But know this: Saddam Hussein killed more than a million people, mostly as an American client, long before the Gulf War. He had nerve gased his own people (no, wait, they were Kurdish Iraqis, so I guess he didn't see it that way). Assuming that you're very young, perhaps that was too long ago, but you have NO EXCUSE not to know the crimes of Milosevic and Serbia, which drove so many refugees to flee to Sweden, among other places, where many were greeted with fear and hatred. You are an ignorant, drooling moron and you give pacifism an ugly name.

This is my first time to post. Truthfully, I rarely even read the forum. I jump immediately to the new story submissions. For that purpose, this is the best site I have found online.

My personal experiences are not the issue here. They are personal and will stay such.

Suffice to say, the misery of these past few days is made lighter by the words of support on this forum.

Flattery will get you an answer. The US did not make war against Serbia for any conventional imperialist reasons. The darkest view you can place is that we did it to ensure the stability of a Europe that was being overrun with refugees, and whose native populations frighten us with their violent xenophobia. I supported Clinton's intervention enthusiastically, in part for humanitarian reasons, which were pretty fucking obvious to anyone with a heart and brain by then, and in part to help keep Europe's fascist parties from becoming too popular as Germans, French, Belgians, Austrian, etc. (not last: Swedes! My last night in Umea I watched a bartender leap over the bar to punch a Moroccan for talking with a Swedish woman!) grow whenever their nations have many foreigners to kick around. So yeah, my cynical reasons regarding Serbia had to do with protecting Swedes, in part, from the consequences of Serbian genocide and democracy from the racist reactions to those consequences. It was one of the first US miliary interventions I supported so enthusiastically. I guess that makes me not a humanitarian in your book. Go punch a Swedish racist.

That's what we're trying to do, Pacifist - Stop The Violence. You want to talk violence? Murderers just killed thousands of innocent American citizens. There were entire families in those planes. Imagine you and your family huddled together, watching terrorists fly your plane into a building. The horror of it all is overwhelming.

No, America is not blameless. Every country has its baggage. But I think this is a piss poor time to jump on us about it. Those people in those planes and in those buildings - they were just regular people. The only difference between them and you is accident of birth. It could easily have been you or your friends & family. If it were, you would want comfort - not attacks - from your allies.

I'll tell you all now - I am sick to the teeth of everyone trying to turn this horrible, devastating situation to their political advantage. People from other countries carrying on about how we MADE this happen by our policies. But what is most hurtful is what I'm hearing from Americans. I turned on AM talk radio today and callers of nationally syndicated shows are throwing around words like "towel head" and "sand nigger", and talk about how all people with a certain set of political views are responsible for this act.

It saddens me to the core of my existence that at a time when we should be pulling together as a country, there are those who seek to further fracture us - who, instead of attacking the monsters who hijacked those planes, are attacking other Americans who have different skin or different views. To be attacking other Americans right now, regardless of their political stripe, is the height of cowardice and callousness.

I hope that others in other countries around the world will have the good sense to not throw this up in our faces at a time when we're all hurting. There will be a time for discussion, but now is not it. And I hope that we as Americans will have the good sense to blame those who are responsible, rather than try to exploit the deaths of thousands of people to further our own political agendas. I hope we will not use this as an excuse to harm Americans of Persian descent. I hope we will act like Americans, and will now be tricked into acting like monsters ourselves.

Let's pull together as Americans to make sure this never, ever happens again. Let's not allow those who seek to divide us for their own selfish reasons achieve their goal. And let's get through this united.
