"Oh it was just some girls talking about their dates in the restroom," Alice laughed. "It took me back to when i was dating and those girlie conversations we used to have. Although i have to say that i wasn't offering quite as much in those days as those two girls were. It was just a kiss and a cuddle back then i'm afraid. Anyway let's just say that one of their partners will be getting lucky this evening while the other will just have a large credit card bill to look forward to."

Brandon cringed. "Ooh, that's tough," he said, feeling sorry for the poor guy who was going home empty-handed.

"Guy probably just has no game," he added as he stood up and put his jacket on, having received his credit card back. Offering his hand to Alice, he smiled. "Ready to go?"

“Sure. Thank you for a nice meal, darling. Are you sure you’re ok to drive?” she asked.

Alice took Brandon’s hand and after collecting her coat and wrapping herself up in it to protect her from the cold night air, they walked to the car.

They weren’t the only ones that were leaving. The restaurant was emptying now. Clearly the young lovers, or at least those that had been successful, had somewhere they’d rather be.

"You're welcome, and yes, I'm more than OK to drive," Brandon replied.

Instead of walking arm in arm like they had earlier, they walked hand in hand out to the car. As they crossed the parking lot, Brandon's thumb gently massaged the top of his mother's hand. They reached the car, and he opened the door for her, allowing her to slide in before shutting the door and entering the car on the driver's side.

"Sorry, should've warmed it up first," he lamented as he quickly turned the car on and turned the heat up. He pulled out of the parking spot and began to drive back to his parents' home.

The car was very cold and the heater struggled to warm it up on the short drive home. Alice wrapped herself up in her coat and pulled the collar tight around her neck.

Fortunately it didn't take long to get back to her house though and when Brandon pulled his car onto the drive she invited him in.

"Do you want a coffee before you drive home?" she asked.

They walked into the house together and as they did her mobile phone rang.

Looking at the screen she saw it was Max and she answered it. In the background she could hear the sound of sports being played on television and a general hum of people. It didn't take a genius to figure out that Max was in a bar.

"I just thought I'd call you to see how your date went," Max joked.

"He was a perfect gentleman," Alice replied looking at Brandon. "We've just got back. Brandon's here having a coffee before he drives home."

"Well say hi to him," Max said then got more serious. "I'm sorry i missed valentines night. I'll make it up to you next week I promise. It doesn't mean i don't love you."

"I know sweetheart, I love you too," Alice said then stopped for a moment before continuing. "Now you're embarrassing me in front of my our son," she joked. "I'll see you tomorrow night. Love you."

"Hi, Dad! Bye, Dad!" Brandon called out loud enough for Max to hear on the other line just before Alice hung up. He sat at the kitchen table and waited for the coffee to finish brewing. Once it was done, he got up and poured the both of them a cup, then handed one to her.

"So did you have a good time tonight?" he asked as he sat at the kitchen table, sipping on the warm beverage, helping to sober him up a bit.

“Yes I did. Other than your father, I can’t think of anyone I would rather have spent it with and I don’t mean that as an insult. Valentines night is definitely for the youngsters though. I wonder how those two girls I saw on the restroom are getting on now.”

Alice had disappointed a few boys on her time. It was a tricky business. The male ego was a delicate thing especially when it came to rejection.

“Mmm coffee,” Alice as she sipped from her cup. “I think the alcohol and then the heater in your car was making me feel a bit woosy.

"Yeah, the Jack and Coke hit me a bit harder than I was expecting," Brandon laughed. "But seriously, I don't think I would've enjoyed myself with other girls as much as I did with you tonight," he confessed.

"Plus it helped that I was with the most attractive woman in the place," he added with a smirk.

He finished his coffee and stood up. "Well, I guess I should get going..." he began, though the tone in his voice hinted that he wasn't ready to call it a night just yet. He opened his arms for a hug.

“Oh I don’t know about being the most attractive girl in the place. That waitress was pretty good looking.,” she told Brandon. “You know you should have got her number.”

When Brandon suggested it was time to go she didn’t want to hold him up. He still had a drive ahead of him and unlike her he had work in the morning. She got up and hugged him goodnight.

“Thank you once again for a lovely evening darling,” she said afterwards. “Drive home safely.”

Brandon rolled his eyes, smiled and shook his head.

"You're very welcome," he said as he hugged her tightly. He could smell her inviting fragrance as he held her closely, and he allowed his hands to slowly slide up and down her back, stopping just before they could reach her ass.

Brandon slowly pulled away from the embrace, though his fingers lightly intertwined behind her back. He looked over his mother's body, then looked deeply into her eyes. Without another word, he closed his eyes and leaned down to softly press his lips to hers.

“Brandon, what are you doing?” Alice asked her son. “Have you lost your mind. You just heard your father on the phone a moment ago. ”

Alice was visibly shocked by her son’s advances. She’d done absolutely nothing to provoke it. It had come out of the blue and the way he had acted was scaring her.

“I think you’d better leave right this moment,” she told him.

As Alice scolded Brandon, the color faded from his cheeks. He had crossed the line that no son should cross, and he got the result that he should have expected.

"You're right. I'm sorry," he said with a solemn nod, then turned toward the door.

Alice stood shivering with fright as she watched her son drive away. She poured herself a large drink to steady her nerves and tried to rationalise what had happened. She thought back over the the evening. Perhaps she’d led him on but as she played the evening back in her mind she could see she’d given Brandon no reason to act like that. And right until the last moment he’d given no indication of what he was going to do.

She thought about Max. What was she going to tell him. Should she tell him anything at all? Whatever she did, her relationship with her son was irretrievably damaged now.
