Story Rejection

I don't think that title is the problem. The poster isn't being clear about the possible problem, so is probably just spinning wheels in the wrong suppositions.

Pretty much. It's not hard to get a story posted here as long as you follow the rules, such as they are. There's not that many no-no's.

Most people start existing before they are 18, I think you'll find. Zero is traditional, though many babies are magically two months old immediately after their seven-month pregnancy.

Writing about adults, with brief,.totally unsexualised references to anything that happened in childhood, is hardly a major imposition of this site that's publicising works for free.

Obviously deliberately misunderstood. I mean crossdressing starts before 18. You often want to refer to why the character are the way they are, in the story. Many of my stories were romance with a little sex.

The story I had rejected had a line "When I was five, I asked my mother why I wasn't a girl" That was it. No other referece to childhood. I removed it, it got rejected. I had an editor edit it. He could not see that it broke any rules. Posted it again. It got rejected in just a few hours. I have never had one rejected that fast. It was as if they jsut rejected it without reading it. Usually it takes a few days to publish or reject. I wondered if it was the title, After Linda.

I was going to change it, but thought I don't need this crap.

If I decide to write a kidnapp/rape/torture/castration/necrophilia story that will get published on here easily.

I did get around 44 stories on here with very few problems. What bugged me is they would not tell me what the problem was. Even after I asked I just got the standard "Check the guidlines".

I was warned by a few not to post on here due to the freedom anonymous trolls have to comment. I did not get too much of that, but have seen a lot of caustic crap from them.

I agree with you that gender is a different thing from sex. But anyway, that wasn't the reason yours was rejected apparently. I suggested that the editors highlight the offending passage in red. Thanks Windar. I don't understand why anyone puts up with their crap. Everyone leaps to their defence. The writers are one of the reason's they can sell advertising.

The large amount of visitors are attractived by their work. Which they contribute for free! Someone said this site is publishing for free. There are hundreds of sites that will put your work on for free, because they dont pay you.

That's why I took my stories off. I won't make the effort , if they won't make an effort to tell me why they wouldnt approve it. I have had 5 emails asking where my stories are . I directed them to the other sites. I have 3 other sites I put stories on. For Free, strangely enough.

That's all it takes to get the story rejected for reference to children and sex. Adults cannot even "remember" when they were younger than 18 in relation to anything about sex. The rejection notice they sent you probably had some subtle line in it saying "No memories of childhood sex."

It happened to one of my stories when the high school girl related something in the 8th grade gym locker room when her nemesis saw her larger tits. The HS aged girl could be 18. But the 8th grader wasn't.

I eliminated all ref to 8th grader tits, made the couple 18 years old in their senior year, and no sex at all until AFTER they graduated HS. The story passed muster and posted.

Why don't the other writers complain or have the same problem? Easy, they follow the simple easy rules and understand that the owners have the right to do what they want, how they want. No one else has a problem with why their story was kicked back., There is a note attached to each one.

Keep bitching, the more you do, the more people who will ignore you.

First: The initial rejection at record speed was probably "luck of the draw", with your story being picked at the top of a new queue for their review workload.

Then, I found with my first rejected story, the subsequent review took MUCH longer (about a week) to finally approve, which I would guess is due to their already having spent time on mine and placing it at the bottom of future queues.

I may disagree with their iron-fisted standards and extreme aversion to any implication of underage sex. But it is their right and standard. Don't take it as a personal attack on YOU, because that's paranoia. They have thousands of others to attack, so we're not as special as we like believe.

In my case, I was annoyed at having to re-write the scenario, BECAUSE the high school Prom was so integral to the set-up and the 8th grade incident was the set-up explaining why the gorgeous girl was a social outcast.

It wasn't made clear here. The reference to anyone under the age of 18 was the first thing I took out. Less than a day to get that version rejected.

Then had an editor from the site looked at it. He edited it in less than a day. I submitted it. It got rejected in just a few hours.

It's 2500 words. I would love to know why it was rejected. It was called After Linda

Now, don't wail and gnash your teeth about how could that offend anyone. I edited a story for someone who had pretty much the same line. It took about three attempts to get it right as I missed it. Change that to 'a first year Uni student' and it would be fine. Unless I missed something else.

Thanks Rusty, I suppose if they have software that looks for boy, taking it to mean less than 18, and assume all teenagers are less than 18. It would get rejected.
I wonder if boy was the trigger. Must be lots of references to girls on here. I will tke both out to be safe.

I suppose I am too close to the story to realise that.

I would have returned that to Laurel and said that it didn't violate any rule I was aware of, because it doesn't.

Well, I'll probably be criticized for saying that, but it seems it takes several people to figure out whether a rule was broken or not and which line did so.

Here is my simple question: What would be the objection to: (a) having all the rules gathered under Instructions to Authors and (b) Having the offending lines marked in red in the returned submission so that the authors and members of this board don't have to waste time deciphering the chicken bones?

The only response I've heard is "Laurel doesn't have to do anything because there are 175 stories posted/day". So, one should only do simple, sensible things that improve processes when one HAS to???

No worries - teenager/boy would be the trigger.

We all, including the site owners, know that the concept of sex only starts at 18 is not realistic but they're protecting their business. And you're right, they would be very busy and an individual response would not be practical.

Yes, self-editing is not particularly helpful. Try and find a couple of beta readers until you get a feel for how things work here.

NW - I agree, but after the third attempt it was easier to change the line. It wasn't critical to the story.

I'll answer (b) for you. Laurel's site. Laurel is the only person who checks stories submitted. She checks every story. She's not an editor, and she doesn't have the time to babysit every writer. Or any writer. So she won't. Ever. You'll get a standard response, and you have to figure it out from there.

Simple advice - if you push the envelope, your story will get rejected. And it'll keep on being rejected until you figure it out and comply.

Live with it. The rules are there, you have to figure them out like everyone else has. Ask here if you're not sure, and people will help with advice, but for god's sake stop with the non-stop whining.

By the way, I have 18 stories/chapters here, so I have figured out how to post. But it shouldn't be a guessing game, which seems to be your preference.

Anyway, I'm not going to post more stories on this mediocre site, so it's irrelevant. I have much better places to post; that is a simple fact-that there are better-run places (both free and pay sites) with simple. clearly-stated rules and moderators who actually are accessible and pleased to interact with writers. You should get out more...

I don't think "boy" or "girl" would be as big a flag as "teenager".

E.G. "Oh boy, it's hot..." or "I grabbed a po-boy." Not that I know what one is, but I saw it in another thread.

I think that Laurel does NOT look at every story. I think most stories go through without her seeing more that the title, description, category, and author--if even that.

I agree the "boy" is a rejection word, often without foundation, as "boy" can be used in so many ways that don't mean a male under eighteen. When I want the word to stick, I put a note about it in the Notes box. I think putting a note in the Notes box is the only guarantee that you are getting through the program to Laurel's direct attention.

If the use has been cleared by Laurel, as my post on top of yours noted I do, of course a search will bring them up.

You really are doing a lot of Web site attacking for not being just exactly what you want it to be for you while saying you are leaving here because it isn't. A better move might be to settle down and spend more time seeing what is done here and why and how you can fit in and not acting like you are a member of the board of directors here.
