First, thank you for all the feedback on my first story. It means a lot. I am curious: What kind of stories do you prefer? short form or long form? I love writing both and want to make sure that what I am putting out is enjoyed by the people reading it.

This should probably be in the story feedback forum. However:

Readers are not homogenous. Some will enjoy shorter stories, others longer. I suspect most won't care as lobg as the story is good.

Best thing to is read the most popular stories in the categories you publish in. That should give you an idea about what readers enjoy.

I didn’t realize there were different places to post until afterwards. My fault. However, thank you for the reply and advice. I’ll definitely do that. Thank you.

Like @THBGato said, readers aren't homogenous. And there are hundreds of thousands of them. Write the story that you want to write, and make it the best story you can. That's no guarantee of success, but at least you'll have enjoyed the process and you'll take pride in what you've written.

Stories will be enjoyed if they contain good writing. Don't bother trying to second guess readers though - some like long stories, some like short stories. There is no universal reader.

If you are a single category writer, you could do some homework on that category to see what its trends are, but generally speaking, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Responses here would be meaningless. Unless you only want to please AH members. You should write what pleases you. You will gather a following of like-minded people.

But, to satisfy your curiosity, on Literotica I only read short stories (3 lit pages or less), unless a longer one is recommended for a particular reason. Then I copy it into Word and send it to my Kindle.

So... several posts on dairy practices later...

That's the best advice I've seen for authors trying to build up a readership. (I'm not one of them, but I do appreciate smart opinions.)

I disagree that this post goes in the Feedback category. It's a generic question to Lit forum members. It's not a request for feedback on a particular story. I'm bothering to reply here just because DallasDiamond says their new here.

I usually will read shorter stuff, on the rare ocassion I wanna beat my meat, and not to visual porn, and read more than one, to keep the sex going faster.

But you're not gonna please everybody. People who like long shit, ain't reading your short stories, and vice versa.

The readership is so big and varied here that you should never choose your story length based on wanting to please one group or another. Write the best stories YOU want to write and you will draw the readership that is best suited to you.

Bit of an aphorism, but: stories should be as long as they need to be to tell the story. Some stories are best left short and sweet, others benefit from taking their time.

To give a somewhat serious answer to the OP that's framed slightly differently: some people visit looking for stories to get them 'in the mood' while others visit when they're already revved up. The former are probably looking for something more long-form, especially if it takes them a while to get their motor running; it's essentially foreplay, and sealing the deal too quickly leaves them hanging and disappointed. The latter are probably just wanting something relatively quick to help push them over the edge, so anything that takes too long to get to the payoff may be ignored, or at best skimmed. And plenty of readers, I expect, exhibit both preferences at various different times.
So yeah, as others have said, write whatever and someone out there is probably going to enjoy it regardless, even though others will nope out in a hurry based on the word count.
