It's beautiful, isn't it? The bursting forth of flowers from the cold earth, hearing the birds start chirping again outside the window, dogwoods and azaleas blooming here in the Southeast USA.

It's also miserable. Itchy eyes, itchy nose, a voice that sounds more and more like Stevie Nicks.

All my tried and true methods have failed me, even my prescription meds aren't keeping the "itchies" at bay this year. Anyone have any home remedies to share? Or, feel free to pull up a chair and suffer along with me. We'll bitch and moan together.

I see (hear) we are from the same region.

The only thing I've found that helps is drinking plenty of water. I think the flushing out of the system must help. Of course I may have just been lucky the past few years. I detest sinus infections!

Good luck.

Thanks, I do drink plenty of water, have to with all the antihistamines. Not only do they dry out your sinuses, they dry everything!

Ever heard of EFT? Short for emotional freedom technique.
Sounds weird, is weird.

But very effective. And easy to learn. And you can learn it for free.
So really, you have nothing to lose. Give it a search, there's lots of resources on the web.

And I'd be really interested to know how it worked for you.

Have fun!

I've been getting allergy shots for a couple of years now, I have to say they have made a world of difference.

Yes they do. I'd also recommend Ocean; it's a saline nasal spray. Use it in the morning and at night.

I think that's probably the next step, because they seem to get worse each year. I'm just not looking forward to all the testing. If it makes that much difference, though, it may well be worth the trouble.

Again, another good suggestion. Thanks.

I'm in VA, medicated and miserable. But all the flowers are lovely. :D

I got a cold two weeks ago, and got a humidifier, supposed to help with allergies too. It seems to be working to a certain extent, definately keeps me from drying out so much.

Actually, my allergies have gotten wierd lately. Rather than getting a runny nose, I get a sore throat and a swollen uvula. The sucker gets so big that it gets caught in my throat.

Well, that is weird! So is the word uvula, if you think about it. Good tip about the humidifier, thanks. I just love the smell of Vicks Vapo Rub.

Here in the Midwest my allergies are kicking my ass! Runny nose, sneezing and going through the big boxes of Puffs... :(

I've found that mega-doses of vitamin C and E make the anti-histimines more effective.

I've also found that I need to keep changing antihistimines periodically because I build up a "tolerance" to any particular antihistimine -- not just different brands, different compounds like switching from benadryl to actifed or Claritin for a week or two at a time.

I have the same issue. Has anyone found anything that doesn't make you drowsy? Even the non-drowsy formulas make me a zombie. I can't work like that...

The only other thing I found that sometimes works is local bee pollen. Gives you small doses of what your allergic to, so you build up a tolerance.

That makes perfect sense, almost like nature's allergy shots. How do you know it's local, though?

I'm not good at linking things but I'll try.

Go to Farmers markets. They have to have apiary certificates so you can see where they have their hives.

Do a search. I can't find the one I'm listed on. (that's how bad I am with a computer).

Thanks!

My mom has bad allergies and I have been starting to get them as well.
She swears by her air filter. At least it gives her a safe haven when at home.
I got one and it didn't do as much for me but it still helps.
If you get one the quality will definatly make a difference.

These are good filters and move a LOT of air.

You know what's amazing? How many different symptoms can be caused by "allergies" and "sinuses" and how fucking severe those can feel.

Right now with the pollen count through the roof, my kids, my cats and I are all suffering in various ways. If I didn't know what it was, I'd think there was some virus or flu doing it. It's absolutely ridiculous. And don't even get me started on the cost of allergy meds.

*grumps*

Fury :rose:

This worked wonders on me. Go to your local health/vitamin store and get some oil of oregano pills. Good all natural remedy.

I was on Allegra for years but when Claritan went over the counter, my insurance company stopped paying as much for the Allegra. My Dr. recommended Claritan but it did nothing for my allergies.

Alavert was next on the OTC market so I tried it. I have been on it ever since. I started taking it year round at first, but have tappered off to just in the Spring when I need it the most. It doesn't make me drowsy and works great for my allergy symptoms.
