It was just after supper when the phone rang and his mom handed to him. Jake was hoping to hear from Brenda of perhaps a college friend. Instead it was Mrs. Edwards, the new director at camp. Jake instantly lost his breath.
However, she had an almost apolgetic tone to her voice as the conversation concerned the last days of the camp. It was not directly stated that Mrs. Hanson had been fired, but Jake certainly could see no other answer. Mrs. Edwards thanked Jake for his help and said nothing about the "beach party." She even made it clear that he was welcome back for next summer! She did state that all the camp equipment was accounted for and she was glad everyone was safe after the storm. When she mentioned the counselors sleeping in two different cabins, Jake suspected that someone had "squeeled" and told everything. He immediately began thinking of who it might be. Mrs. Edwards closed by asking if he could attend a one-day training session on Saturday, Oct. 4th. He agreed to do it.
After the call, he checked on E-mail and found Brenda's note. It a was very heartfelt note but nothing overly sensitive was written. Jake knew his E-mail was only viewed by himself and he typed back a message to Brenda that would be sure to make her blush. He also cautioned her to be expecting a call from Mrs. Edwards.
He had only day left before leaving for college.
