"Ashley? Are you ready?" my mom's voice called from the hallway. "We've got to get going or we're going to be late."

"I'm ready," I replied as I held my cell phone up and snapped a picture. I lowered the phone back down and proceeded to post the new picture to my Facebook account along with a caption that read 'My parents are going to Paris, I get to go to my Aunt's house'.

It's not that I didn't like my aunt. She was fun, but this was Paris we were talking about. What eighteen year old girl didn't want to go to Paris for the summer. I tried to be understanding. It was my parents' twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and they didn't need me tagging along. Didn't make it suck any less.

As I stood up and started toward the door, my mom barged in. "Honey, sweetie, you need to put something on over that tank top," she said looking down at my chest and immediately heading for my closet.

I looked down and realized that she was probably right. The tank top I was wearing was having a hard time containing my breasts. It was a common problem these days. My chest had grown considerably in the last six months and my wardrobe was still lagging behind. I grabbed the shirt my mom pulled from the closet and slipped it on before following her downstairs.

An hour later, we pulled up in front of my aunt's place. Mom and dad couldn't come in, they were cutting it close as it was to make it to the airport on time, so I waved goodbye to them as I stood on the sidewalk, surrounded by suitcases and bags. When the car pulled around the corner and out of view I began gathering my bags as best I could and started up the sidewalk to my aunt's front door.

Jessica came skidding up to the curb in her Nissan Altima and fumbled out, dropping keys and her beach bag. She'd completely forgotten her niece arrived today and not tomorrow.
"Dear God, when did it become Saturday? Sheesh!"
She laughed as she grabbed some of the bags and began shuffling into the house in her bikini.
"Oh God, hot new guy at work has this beach party right? I figured you don't come until tomorrow so I go and he can sneak out in the morning when you show up..."
It's always been like this. I'm not so much her aunt as he friend. That kinda cool, dorky older friend you always stuck with at reunions an other unfun stuff.

I couldn't help but giggle at the sight of my Aunt Jessica trying to run up the sidewalk in her bikini, carrying two of my bags in one hand and fumbling with her keys in the other hand.

"It's no big deal, I just got here," I said as she opened the door and we started in. "I'm sorry you had to leave your party early."

As soon as we got inside I dropped all of my suitcases and bags by the door. Safely inside, away from strangers' eyes, I quickly peeled off my extra shirt and tossed it on the couch, then proceeded to toss myself on the couch.

"You could always go back," I said as I kicked my flip flops off and tucked my legs up under me.

"Oh, sure, and bring some strange hottie over here and have your mother forever nagging me? 'Oh Jess, look what you did. My daughter depended on you.' 'Jess, get in line, you're such a kid.' Nah."

Flopping onto the couch as well and kicking my bare feet up to the coffee table. The TV is on but it's one of my soap operas. I wave my hand in the general direction of my movie collection.

"Dig in, movies and bad soaps is all I got. By the way, pizza or chinese for dinner?"

"Definitely Chinese," I replied as I stood up and stepped over Jessica's legs so I could get to her dvd collection. I bent over, my back to Jessica, as I started flipping through the movies. After a few minutes, I decided there wasn't really much there I was interested in watching.

"So, just how handsome was this guy?" I asked as I walked around the coffee table and rejoined my aunt on the couch.

"He's like 6'2" right, so a full eight inches on me. Big blue eyes, brown hair, and he has that stubble look that even when he shaves he has a shadow. MM! What a hottie."
I really didn't know how to tell my niece it wasn't a guy. Actually she was my long time co-worker Beth. Red head, shorter than me. We were closet lesbians and Beth looked out for me. I couldn't face my family with the truth about me yet. Beth was showing me to her Lesbian Alliance Support Group and most were what you'd expect, middle-aged women who'd seen and dealt with the worst in people already.
"What about you, huh? Any cuties at school? That's over right? You're off to college soon."

"Yep, I'm done with High School and High School boys," I assured her as I turned my body to face her. I was surprised Jessica was sitting there in her bikini. She definitely had the body for it though. "I just never seemed to find the right guy, I don't know why. I guess cause they all seemed so immature. Of course they didn't really start paying attention to me until I got these," I said as I motioned toward my boobs.

"I'm hoping college will be better," I explained as I once again tucked my feet up under my butt.

"Pssh, not really. After freshman year they get better. Once they grow up and start doing things for themselves..."
My answers are rather robotic as my little niece pointing to her tits got me excited. She is my type and all, but I mean... We're family... Right? She's gorgeous but she's straight. She couldn't sit down long enough to even watch the L Word... When she was 12. Damn it all.
"I'm just saying. You want maturity you either need a sugar daddy or a good group of girlfriends."

Something about the way my aunt says sugar daddy just had me laughing my butt off. I was laughing so hard that my eyes started to water and my chest was bouncing up and down. When I finally stopped, I wiped the tears from my cheeks and looked up at Jessica. "Well, I don't know if I'm quite ready for a sugar daddy, and you're probably the closest thing I have to a girlfriend."

The truth that I didn't tell my aunt was that I'd never really been attracted to guys. Maybe it was, like I said, simply because high school guys were just immature. Part of me wondered if there was something wrong with me. It wasn't as if I never got turned on. I did, but usually only when watching people have sex in a movie or tv show.

"Seriously, watch the Playboy bunnies show on E. They stand around, get pictures taken, sleep with an eighty year old dinosaur, and make some major bank. Why can't some rich girl-guy come to my door?"

I stand up and bend over to flip through my DVDs, avoiding any questions she may have. Did I slip? Yes, damnit. Did she notice? Who knows, she'll come to me if she did.

"No girlfriends huh? Sweetie, your crusty old aunt should really not be your best friend. No matter how amazing I really am."

"You're not crusty or old," I laugh as I watch Jessica bend over. I can't help but notice that she has a great body. Perfect skin, slender legs, cute butt. It's no wonder she always seems to have a new guy every time we talk. Wait did she guy or girl?

As I wait for her to return to the couch, I can't help but wonder if she misspoke. Could Jessica be bisexual? She would have said something before now, right? Probably not. Not like my parents were the most understanding people, and I got the impression my grandfather wasn't either.

"Guy-girl?" the question came out before I could decide whether I should ask or not.

I stand up and I realize how busted I am. Suddenly the judging and the awkward conversations, and the "Jesus", and... Wait, this is my same sweet little niece. The one who followed me around the reunions, who I took to high school parties when she was like 11. I can trust her, right? Glee was teaching kids to be accepting and all.
"Look, sweetie... I'm... I..."
Words keep failing me, it's not like I'd planned this conversation. I sit down on the couch next to her and shrug. My breath leaves and I slump down into the cushions.
"Not 'guy-girl' per say.. Just girl. I'm... a lesbian."

Holy shiznit! My aunt is a lesbian! I realize after several moments that I not only haven't responded to her very difficult admission, but my jaw is hanging open like a cartoon character. Finally I close my mouth and try to smile at her.

"I-I had no idea," I stammer. "It's okay, I mean, you don't have to worry that I'm going to freak out. It's not like your the first...lesbian I've known." Okay, so she is totally the first lesbian I've ever known, but I don't want her to feel weird, so I lie.

"Why didn't you tell me before now?" I ask.

Leaning in and trying to make a joke of things as I always do.
"Sweetie, have you met our family? Grandpa would have me executed."
She's... ashamed. I can tell, she's ashamed of me like I knew everyone would be. I can feel myself ready to cry but I won't. Why should I be ashamed of myself? So I stand up and weakly excuse myself. I pick up the phone but it's too difficult to see the number through my tears.

I laugh at Jessica's comment about grandpa, but I can tell something's wrong when she excuses herself to the other room. Way to go, genius. Your aunt confides in you and you make her feel like a freak.

I decide to go find Jessica and make sure she's okay. I find her in the next room, her phone in her hand. I don't really know what to say to convince her that I'm okay with her being gay, so I just walk up behind her and put my arms around her, hugging her against my chest, "I love you, Jessica. This doesn't change anything between us, okay?"

I turn around and grab my little niece into a big bear hug like when she was a baby. Squeezing her to me and kissing her noisily on the forehead.
"When'd you get so grown up?"
The tears are getting wiped away and a smile grows across my face. My sweet niece is such a grown woman now. God I must be old.

I can't help but feel relieved when Jessica turns around and hugs me tightly against her chest. I couldn't stand myself if I'd hurt her somehow. Feeling her arms around me, and knowing that everything is okay between us, makes me feel good and I feel myself relaxing in her embrace.

I finally pull away, giggling a little at her question. "Well, I just got the boobs a few months ago, but I've always had the brains."

I flop down on her bed and reach for her hand, trying to get her to sit down or lay down with me, "So, is there a special young lady in your life or was the whole beach party thing made up?"

"Oh God... No, it was real. A Lesbian Alliance Support Group. A bunch of overweight woman who want to tell me how empowering being a lesbian is. It's no different really. I just REALLY understand why guys can't help checking us out."
Laughing I lay down next to her and pull her into a hug. She's so sweet and I can;t believe how good it feels knowing she accepts me.

As my aunt lays down next to me, I snuggle up against her, ignoring the fact that she is still just wearing her small bikini. She wraps her arms around me again, and I can't help but sigh contentedly. For some reason, I actually feel closer to her than I did before, maybe because she shared something so important with me before the rest of the family, or maybe because I felt like she might just understand me a little more now...

"Jess...can I tell you something?" I say, my voice softer than I intended. "I've never really been attracted to boys. I don't know why. Do you think I-do you think I could be...a lesbian?"

"I don't know sweetie. Do you like girls? It's kind of important."
I try to keep my sarcasm to a minimum. She's not mocking me, she's not the type. Maybe it really has been on her mind lately. She looks so sincere and vulnerable snuggled up to me.

"I honestly don't know," I say. "I think women are so beautiful and sometimes I find myself thinking about kissing them, but I-I don't know what that means."

I feel silly telling Jessica these things, even though they're true and even though she just shared something so intimate with me. I nuzzle my head against her shoulder, my cheek resting against her chest.

"When did you know that you liked girls? How did you know?"

"I was a little younger than you to be honest. I was working on a study project with another girl from class and we were laughing and playing around and slacking off. After a bit I was fumbling through her backpack for notes when a kind of self-help book falls out. It was about coming out and stuff, she looked and me and almost began to cry. We talked and I held her and she kissed me. What made me realize it was that I was kissing her back."

"That sounds nice," I admitted. "I wish it could be that easy for me. Maybe I just need to kiss a girl and see what happens, or a boy for that matter. I've never kissed anyone, at least not since I was in elementary school."

"What was it like?" I asked, pulling away from Jessica enough that I could look her in the face as she answered.

"Softer, boys... they push too hard. Girls smell better too."

It's clear she doesn't get what I'm saying so I decide to break the tension and be crazy, funny Jess again. I lean my head in and give her a light kiss like I have for years. We've always found everyone's reactions to it hilarious.

I was just about to agree with Jess about girls smelling better, when I saw her leaning toward me. I knew what she was going to do and I felt my breath catch in my throat, then her lips were on mine. It was only for a short moment, but time seemed to stop for that moment, our lips pressed lightly together as we lay on her bed.

As she pulled away, I realized that she had meant it as a joke, and the last thing I wanted was for her to see the look on my face. If she saw my face she would know that I liked it, and if she thought I liked kissing my own aunt, she would think I was some kind of pervert. So I didn't let her pull away. I reached out and put my hand on the back of her head and held her close, pressing my lips to hers.

I know, I know, I was trying to prevent my aunt from realizing that I liked kissing her by kissing her more. It didn't make any sense, but the way I felt when her lips slipped against mine, I really didn't care if it made sense.
