Surviving IC

After bringing down the shutters James started to make his way back to the main warehouse, when he heard something from round the corner, he pressed himself up against the wall, thinking the worst untill he heard Jen and Jersh talking.

"hey, how you guys doin? I've just been out to the gates and locked them and brought the shutters down, Unfortunatly the gates were not locked when I went to check on them, the padlock was on the floor, so just be extra carefull. Hopefully thats just the way the ass of a manager left. I'm just going to check in here, if you guys wanna help"

"Ya sure." Jen responded tersely. Sure he may have been an ass but she still hoped he got out okay. A worse thought would be if he were still here somewhere, then they definitely weren't alone. She hadn't seen what the guys had but it freaked them out and men didn't often show fear among other men or women for that matter without good reason. Something told her this wasn't just a pack of vandals.

"We're still going to have power right? This place totally creeps me out I don't want to have to stay here in the dark too."

"yea, we should have power through the night, I mean they gotta keep the freezers on so I guess the lights should be okay"

I just hope nothing happens to it James thought to himself. They came to the main storage area for stock, cages upon cages of cereal, pop, pet food and everything else. This could take a while, but we have to be sure that we are safe in here.

Rowan walked the whole perimeter of the store to check the windows and doors, admittedly he was scared shitless, but he couldnt show it, he was an officer in Iraq and he could never show that he was afraid or not. But damn, these things out there must worse then the Iraqi freedom fighters.

He walked over to James talking to Jen and looked back and forth between the two and asked, "How many people do we have?" Not a quiver in his voice

((Yaaay i can post again... fun stuff.. i have been waiting for this :p))

As the other two worked their way along one side of the storage area, Jersh took it upon himself to check the other side. The faster they had this place locked down the better. An odd crunching noise startled him and chased his heart to skip a few beats, but as he looked down he realized he had just stepped on some dog food that had been spilled on the floor. The entire floor was a mess, product was split everywhere, even summer-time things like baseball bats and pool toys.

A bit of the tension left his shoulders.... that is until he neared the last door. It was easy enough to spot, the red exit sign blaring above it, and out into the night air.. the door was wide open. Jersh slowly crept up and pulled it closed, half expecting something to jump out at him from the darkened alleys that lined that side of the store. As the locks clicked shut Jersh sighed and then heard a crunching sound again... but he had not taken a single step...

Jersh turned about just in time to avoid getting grabbed by something he assumed was once a woman. Her blond hair was dirty and matted with layers of blood and filth and her fingers resembled something more like curved talons, perfect for shredding up her next meal. She let out an unearthly wail that reminded Jersh about the lore of banshees and her red-glazed eyes focused on him with something even more ominous than hate...hunger..

As she charged at him, Jersh shifted his footing and his foot hit the side of a metal bat. With no time and no clear options, Jersh hooked his toes under it and flung it into the air. Jersh spun around at the same time and took a two handed grip on the bat that suddenly seemed to spring into the air beside him. The beast must have been surprised because it hesitated a moment in it's charge... just long enough for Jersh's roundhouse swing to connect right with the side of her head. A loud metal ping filled the air, like a tuning fork and the impact knocked the attacker clean over.

As she started to push herself back up, Jersh descended on her in a flurry of swings. Ping, ping ping ping. The bat rang out repeatedly as any semblance of her head was turned into a bloody mess. Jersh's arms burned from the exertion and he finally let the bat fall to the concrete floor with one final clang, then fell to his knees, trying to regain his breath.

The scream took every one by shock, James found himself running in the direction it came from, hearing a commotion James slowly approached the corner.

"Jersh? you ok buddy?"

He rounded the corner to see, something lying on the floor, the metal bat, and Jersh down on his knees. He rushed over to him.

"man, what the hell was that? are you ok?".

James knelt with Jersh but never took his eyes off whatever the hell lay across the floor from them, the floor around its head was covered in blood and brain tissue as was the bat.

Suddenly there was a loud bang from the other side of the door, James jumped to his feet. The banging continued accompaned with the sound of scraping and scratching.

"That scream, they heard that thing scream. Those barriers at the front better be good, cause I got a serious bad feeling about this."

"Y-yeah... Im fine" Jersh responded and pushed himself back up to his feet. This had to be a bad dream.... seriously.... this kind of shit did not happen in the real world.

Jersh nudged the woman with his foot to make sure she was dead...or umm...dead"er"..... Thankfully it seemed that bashing her brain to a pulp put her down for good. Jersh put his head in his hands, the banging on the doors was echoing loudly in the storage area. The clamor was not helping his headache.. that only served to upset him more.

"The bat worked this time.... but we need to find a better way of putting these things down" Jersh announced and nodded his head back towards the store. "We should lock down the entrance to this area from the store as well, I do not trust these doors will hold if they get it into their head to use a ram of some sort"

As everyone began to return to the main area of the store, the lights began to flicker, Mike looked up worried.

"I've got a bad feeling about this. Listen I think we better stock up on torches and batteries too, dont ask why but those lights have never been known to do that in all the time I've worked here"

Just as everyone was about to re-enter the main area of the store Mike had a brain wave he remembered a shipment the store recieved a few days earlier, it was a special promotion on gardening tools, which included A selection of chainsaws.

"Jen, Rowan you guys aisle three, get enough torches and batteries to go round. Jersh I think I just thought of something better to put those things down as you put it. Follow me"

Mike took off back into the warehouse.

After locating the said chainsaws James and Jersh returned to the shopping area of the store, they were shocked when they saw the main doors wide open and the barrier on the floor, and no one around. The lights once again began to flicker and stayed of for a few seconds longer this time, it seemed they were on the way out, this was definatly not a good thing.

James didnt know where Jen or Rowana had gone they were nowhere in sight, even worse he didnt know how long the doors had been open and if anything had entered.

Chuck was not typically the oblivious type but she hadn't seen anything out of place on her way to work other than some stupid barrier on the door. Luckily being an assistant manager she had a key and had no trouble getting her keys to open the door. The barrier had been another story and she was a little annoyed as she moved it out of her way.

She saw James and he wasn't looking at her. They weren't all that close but they had joked on occasion. Chuck was typically the quiet sort so it wasn't hard for her to sneak up on him.

"So do we know who put that barrier up and why I had to break it down?" She asked.

As James looked down an aisle he didnt notice someone get closer to him, as the person spoke James almost jumped out of his skin.

"Don't do that, jeez." Once he turned and saw Chuck standing there.
"how the hell did you get here? haven't you seen the things in the streets there's total choas going down. We've been attacked by, well by zombies, I know it sounds like I'm making this up but there is a body in the back to prove it."

"We put the barrier up to stop them from getting in and now we dont know where anyone else has gone, and the lights keep going down too."

"And what are you doing with the chainsaw?" She added as an after thought.

Chuck stared at him, her eyebrow raised as he talked about zombies.

"Did you fall asleep in the back and have a bad dream?" She asked as if he was completely nuts. "I didn't see anything in the streets other than some drunks and there was another drunk wandering around in the parking lot but seriously zombies?" She said before hearing a moan coming from the door that had been left open.

It was the man that she had thought was simply a drunk.

"Oh god," she said taking a big step and moving behind James. Sure, they were close to the door but the dead creature making its way into the door caught Chuck completely off guard.

"What the hell is that thing?" She gasped as it started towards them.

The thing came towards us, the lights once again began to flicker, giving only glimpses of the blood and black goo dripping from it's mouth, as it screamed and shook its head more gore flew out of its mouth. James was struggling to get the chainsaw started

"shit, I cant get the thing started"

Before he knew the thing was nearly on top of him, it lunged for him, knocking him on his back, narrowly missing Chuck. The chainsaw fell to the ground and James was unable to reach it as he held the thing away from him. It was snarling and trying to bite him, James held it back as hard as he could.

Chuck manages not to get crushed as she stumbles away from the fighting monster and man. She can't find her voice to scream but instead backs into the shelves, her foot hitting a shovel. Without thinking she grabs the shovel and swings it like a golf club knocking the zombie's head clean off.

She was surprised as the body continued to flail for a moment after the head was gone. It was then she found her voice and let out a small squeal of disgust and fear.

"I'm ready to put that barrier back up," she said nudging the body with her foot once it stopped moving. "Please?" She asked as if James were going to tell her that they weren't going to put the barrier up.

"Can't we use the liquor cage doors?" She asked motioning to the large wrote iron gates that were on wheels and chained together around the liquor department opening.

James managed to throw the body off him once the head had been removed, it slumped beside him as he turned to rise to his feet. He didnt even try to attempt to clean off any of whatever the hell had splattered all over him with the decapitation. He rose and instantly agreed with Chuck but was hesitant, there was others with us,

"yes, I didnt think of those, lets do it."

James wondered where everyone ele had got to.

Chuck took a shuddering breath trying to calm herself down as James got to his feet. She looked back to the door.

"Are you sure nothing else is going to get back in?" She asked wondering if they had a towel somewhere for James to clean himself up with. She didn't know what else to do right now.

"Should someone guard the door then?" She asked.

"no your right, we need to close the place down make it safe if the others do get back. There wont be much point if they get back and we are either dead or one of those things, lets do it"

He turned and moved towards to the liquor cage door.

Picking up the chainsaw as he walked.

Chuck held onto the shovel for now. She was quick to help with the liquor cage gate and get it moved into position. She knew it was stupid but she locked the front entrance before moving to help lock the gate to the magnetic security poles which were not coming out of the ground without something extreme hitting them.

The dark haired girl looked to James now and tried not to focus on the fact that she was stuck here at work.

She wondered if her family was going to be ok. She had forgotten her cell phone in her car, there was definitely no getting it now.

"So who all is here?" She asked as she started to look around the front end of the store.

"that is what is worrying me, Jen was here and a few customers too, Rowan and Jersh were with them, but since coming back from the warehouse I havent seen anyone"

James started hitting the cage doors to make them loose enough to get out of the floor, but he held back a little as he didnt want to damage them too much.

"this is hopeless, they arent budging. Do you have any ideas"

As he turned to hear Chucks responce he noticed something moving in the shodows behind her. He quickly revved up the chainsaw, this time it started up straight away, Chuck looked worried for a second as James moved towards her

"Chuck move out of the way,"

He threw himself past her and thrust the chainsaw into the shadows, the creature let out a unhuman scream, and the chainsaw tore away at its flesh tearing chunks from it, he started to lift it which he found easier than he thought, as the chainsaw did its thing and ripped the thing in half from the waist up, the thing fell to the floor, the two halfs dropping to either side and the blood spilling out over the floor.

Before they knew it the entrance was filled with the creatures, banging and smashing themselves against the glass doors, which allthough was strong glass did start to buckle.

"oh shit, we gotta get out of her" James screamed.

Watching James trying to forcibly move the guards had Chuck frowning. She really didn't have any ideas about that and she said she didn't but was silenced almost immediately as James rushed past her with the chainsaw and killed the zombie hiding in the shadows behind her.

The girl tried not to vomit as she watched.

Blood was getting everywhere.

"I'm gonna throw up," she said, though she did no such thing.

And then she was suddenly aware of all the things at the door trying to bust down the glass. She looked to James as the doors continued to hold.

"Where?" She asked looking around. She wished that she had some kind of gun to shoot those things with. She knew there was a staple gun in the office. "The offices have huge thick metal doors, they lock on the inside... I have the keys," She said but she was pretty sure that locking themselves in a small room wasn't the best idea.

Could they wait this crap out?

Or would they be able to escape into one of the vents into the ceiling of the store? "We could grab some food and hide out, use the computer to see what's going on... There's a phone in Scott's office that would let us call out to the cops?" She suggested.

With little time to think James thought the best idea was to get out of one one the fire exits at the back, and hope all of the creatures were at the front. The store was not going to be safe for much longer by the look of the glass doors.

"I think we are best getting out of here before we are overrun, we dont want to get stuck somewhere with no way of escape, hopefully we'll find everyone who was in here with us before, or some other survivors at least. Follow me, I've got an idea,"

With that James took off to the staff area, moving towards the staff canteen, which although was on the first floor up, it had large windows, unfortunatly only the smaller upper windows would open, and they were not big enough for a person to get through. James cautiously edged his way over to the glass and sneeked a peek outside, the back alley was clear, there was a bit of light shining down from the street. Making more menacing shadows, James picked up a chair

"Well here goes nothing, but we'll have to be quick. The noise might bring them round here so we gunna have to run. Do you want to jump first or shall I ?"

He swung the chair and flung it at the window, which shattered upon contact, shards of glass flying everywhere. using another chair he cleared the larger unbroken pieces of glass from the frame, as best as he could.
