Tariffs announced on Canada, China, & Mexico goods

Not sure the ramifications of this, but China caused an international uproar yesterday announcing restrictions and bans on cargo containers from giant South Korean supercargo ships that contain goods trans-shipped from the USA.

China is using a US trade tactic against the US. Trade judo!

In expanding export rules on rare earths, Beijing for the first time announced it will require foreign firms to obtain approval from the Chinese government to export magnets containing even tiny amounts of China-originated rare earth materials or produced with Chinese technology.

For anyone familiar with U.S. trade practice, China is simply borrowing a decades-long U.S. policy: the foreign direct product rule. It extends the reach of U.S. law to foreign-made products, and it has been used regularly to restrict China’s access to certain U.S. technologies made outside of the United States, even when they are in the hands of foreign companies.

File this under “unintended consequences of starting trade wars”.

Interesting. Subaru is moving their production for the Canadian Market out of the USA and to Japan to avoid US tariff impacts. Seems like all sorts of trade rejogging is taking place.

Spnme very good points about US-Canada trade in this clipe

Yes, everyone is moving out of the US because our President can't hold a single position for longer than his next phone call.

Yep, and no business can handle the sort of economic nstability he's generating.

The guy doing that clip I shared makes a few good points abut how countries are rejigging their trade around the US. Subaru was an example - they curtail their US production, increase production in Japan, export to Canada except now from Japan - no impact to them, less work in the US for American workers, Canada imports except from Japan, not the US. It's a duh! WTF is he thinking moment. It's happening quite widely. China's exports have grown for example, just not to the US. Canada is also exporting more, but not to the US and rather frantically working torejig their trade away from the US and themselves curb US imports - a concern, since they are our biggest export market by far.

On trade, Trump acts like the kid who slices the birthday cake and expectes to get the biggest piece, then cries when someone else takes it. Except Trump is more likely to throw the cake on the floor.

One thing I do note is Vance is staying quiet on a lot of things - positiining himself as the stable successor, while keeping MAGA onside......

The sad part is the damage that will linger post trump. Relations and supply chains harmed, increased costs and too many bridges burned. Yes throwing the cake on the floor then blaming someone else for the mess.

Carney speaking very calmly and sensibly about Canada's courts of action and his reaction to Trump's comments. Canada is focusing on what they can control.

Carney makes the point that Canada is America's second largest trading partner. 60% of aluminium used in the US comes from Canada and requires the energy output of 10 Hoover Dams - does the US want to invest in generating that much additional energy output? Canada is the largest export customer of 30 US States....

The return on investing and building in Canada and focusing on other export markets is worth far more than a little turbulence with the US

Yes, the Pig went way overboard with his tariff tantrums. It's time to do with him what intelligent posters are doing with MAGAts on this forum-- put the MAGAts on ignore.

Well done, Carney.

The Senate voted against the Petulant Man-Baby’s tariff on Brazil. Unfortunately it will have no impact because the House of Clowns has no spine.

Senate votes to block tariffs on Brazil. It shows some pushback to Trump trade policy

Trump has linked the tariffs on Brazil to the country’s policies and criminal prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The U.S. ran a $6.8 billion trade surplus with Brazil last year, according to the Census Bureau.

$6.8 billion trade surplus sacrificed to Donnie’s tantrum. America last.

A good overview of trade and tariff history between the US and China through Sept 25. The rates were significantly changed in 2025.

China agres to sell rare earth minerals for a year with checks along the way. Soy beans will be sold to China. Need to hear more to see what real gains were made or just another "negotiation" to return where we were before the tariff on tariff off programs began. Did we sell ourselves short for beans?

Why do we come down hard on countries supplying us with fentanyl but not give a shit about the users in the US?

If your bitch is a ho, she gonna get fucked.

This is in regards to trump pretending that the China meeting was successful - it wasn't.

Remember all the farm products that China promised to buy in 2019 when DonOld claimed victory for that trade deal??? Never happened.

😑

And I predict it won’t happen again.

😑

Also:

China’s economy is staggering, and they can’t afford to cancel ANY major purchases of chemicals, etc,. So expect the precursors for fentanyl to continue to flow from China.

😑

Also:

Rare earth metals were an issue that needed to be addressed about ten years ago (about the time DonOld stained The Oval Office the first time), but DonOld did NOTHING.

President Biden, to his credit, stopped advanced chips and semiconductors from being sold to companies in China, but he had too much on his itinerary due to all the crises he inherited from DonOld’s first FAILED "presidency" to FULLY address rare earth metals procurement from sources other than China - although President Biden DID address the problem in part:

Yes, the Biden administration has prioritized building a secure stockpile of critical minerals, including rare earth metals and magnets, as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on China and enhance national security. This includes significant investments and legislative support aimed at increasing domestic production and securing supply chains.

One report indicates the agreement was just rolled back to prior terms with the exception of the Nvidia chips.

So, the Chinese buy US soy beans and get cutting edge technology for rare earth minerals.

Wonder how we got here? Go back to last spring and Trump's aggressive tariffs. That opened the door for China to test drive their export controls. They probably also saw the US flip flopping as their advantage that Trump would taco.

So what did we really get? And what did we give up? We gave up a lot if the technology piece comes through.
