AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas handgun owners would no longer need a license or training to carry their weapon in public under a bill that cleared a major vote Thursday over Democrats who railed against loosening gun laws after the 2019 mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart.

Texas has more than 1.6 million licensed handgun owners. But scrapping that required permit has been a long-sought goal of conservative activists in gun-friendly Texas, where the National Rifle Association is currently trying to reincorporate to avoid a lawsuit from New York state, which is aiming to put it out of business over alleged financial abuses.

Even my Grandmother (RIP passed over at 87)carried a .38 S&W and a knife in her purse.

I have no doubt she would have used it if she had to.

I am almost as good a shot as she was. As she aged she wasn't up to chasing chickens across the chicken yard and didn't want to ruin the meat, so she and S&W removed their heads ... sometimes from 25 ft away!

I do understand that Texas is a big, rural state where police may be few and far between and along the border....so I am not talking about those folks who may actually have a need to protect self and property.

Meanwhile, the aggregate shootings in places like Chicago occur
on a regular basis with little or no lament because the
