Hello Texians! Hope you all had a great Christmas and made it through today, whether you had to go back to work or you hit the sales!

Good for you RA... light is not a burglar's friend.

yeah, a friend at work wants me to go to a gun show with him. He wants a new gun, I just need to replace my pilfered piece.. :p

Imma thinking a .22 for the car, a .380 for my bag, and a shotgun for the house..

Too much?

Ok, I suppose I won't get the RPG...phooey!

You will NOT want to come to Big Mama's house uninvited. :D

shotgun is the way to go... once they hear the cocking of that piece... they will know there was no open invitation :D ;)

Oh noooo, that's horrible to have been sick. That's great you are being proactive protecting your home. It's good to have interior lights on timers too. Mine come on the same time whether I'm at home or not.

Good mornin Texans... I hope everyone enjoys this cool, rainy Saturday (NTexas anyway).

RA, remember what I told you in PM about guns. Every asshole has an opinion and they are all different. So I offer my 2 cents with a big grain of salt.

A .22 is fairly ineffective. All it will do is punch small holes in someone and piss them off. There is an old saying that for personal self defense you should look at something that starts with a "4" (i.e. 40 cal or 45). Having said that, many police departments use 9mm. And the .380 is a good compromise. Especially since they are small and compact (i.e. easy to keep in your purse or even in your pocket) and they are inexpensive. You can get a good one for ~$300. Look at something like the Ruger LCP or equivalent. Small, easy to handle, no sharp protruding edges to get caught on anything and very long trigger pull so it's safe and almost impossible to fire accidentally.

Regardless of what you get, the next two are a MUST!

1) Practice, practice, practice!!! Make sure you are comfortable with holding it, understand it's basic operation and know how to shoot it reasonably. Remember, IF you ever have to use it, it will be the most stressful situation you have ever been in. Do not assume it will be easy to use if you have not been practicing. Regularly!

2) Make sure the bullets you keep in it are hollow points (i.e. not ball ammo). That will ensure if you ever have to use it, it will do major damage. You can practice with ball ammo (much cheaper) but make sure the bullets you keep in it are hollow points.

PM me if you have any other questions. Good luck!

And don't forget to chamber a round, eject the cartridge and load one more round in it. Might as well pack as much as you can carry :) As long as your gun has a safety that is!!

I agree, a .22 is like punching a guy in the mouth
Sure, he'll bleed, but he isn't really hurt, and now he's pissed.

Good catch C_N_C!

One in the chamber (pistol or shot gun) is a must.

Just make SURE you know how to check when they are loaded, treat EVERY gun like it is always loaded and know how to operate the safety if it has one (some pistols do not have a traditional safety).

Feeling the love in here..:D

Yeah, I'm joking about the .22. I see no reason not to get another .38, but my plan is to go, rent a few and try them all out. If I like the .380 better than the .38, well, there you go.

Excellent idea about renting several guns to see what you like best. If you go to a range that is crowded (they all are these days), don't hesitate to walk around and watch others shooting. If you see something interesting, ask them. Almost anyone would let someone shoot their gun for free if they ask. Shooters are a friendly lot for the most part. Especially if a pretty lady asks. ;)

I'll be sure to bring one along then..:p

Ha! You so funny...

Seriously, I have seen more and more women at the range lately. And most are intimidated by it all. But all the men are more than willing to share their ummm gun. ;) They even share with each other. :D It's an odd dynamic really. I think most are just excited to see others that share the same interest they do.

Agreed! Shot my first AK at the range, simply because I asked... :)
