That moment when...

From my "Story Ideas" file, where I jot down ideas and generally outline stories before I start actually writing them:

I’m an idiot ... Fucking moron, that’s so obvious but it took me months.

I don't want to spoil the story (which I'm now writing) but it's a major plot point that changes the course of a character's life, the insight I removed is incredibly obvious (looking back) and yet it didn't come to me for months, like I wrote.

This makes me want to write a story where the plot depends on the charactes' names changing, but it is never actually mentioned or acknowledged in the story.

But I'll wait on that till I have an editor or at least proofreader to drive to drink.

The moment when you think a story is ready to publish. Then you realize that it takes place over 48 hours and it's never night at any time during the story. 48 hours of daylight.

I interrupted fixing that story to post this.

Same story: the moment when I noticed that I had used the word "really" almost 100 times. 75 of those times, it just made the sentence worse. Thanks, search function.

Try worditout - it's a website that does word clouds. Drop your story text into the box (I've not yet discovered its limit), and it presents the hundred most used words, excluding the, I, and, etc. (whatever the fuck those little essential words are called). Other than basic spell check, it's the only editing tool I use, it's really, really useful... truly, really ;).
