The ride back home was easier because I knew the road and was much more comfortable on the bike

We put the bikes away and we go back to the fire pit, I've already filled it with wood before you got here. I love that all of my plans have come together today. I ignight my propane torch and get the fire going, it takes off nicely and should be down to a nice bed of red hot coals by the time I get the steaks seasoned!

I take your hand and we walk back to the house, the kitchen is still a work in progress, so I'm not very proud to have you spend much time in it. There are no doors on the cabinets but I hand built them all, and the floor is still old peal and stick tiles. I remove the T-bones from the fridge and unwrap them, I season with salt, pepper and garlic powder on both sides.

You come out of the bathroom just as I'm all ready to head to the fire. You pick up the glasses and wine and we go back outside, it's a beautiful evening and I couldn't be happier.

"Okay, we put the steaks in this little basket thing and clamp them in place with the top of the basket."

The fire is perfect and I prop the basket up on the rocks of the fire pit, turning my attention to you I pour us each a glass of wine. Holding my glass out in fron t of me.

"A toast to the first night of the rest of our lives!"

We sit back and relax as the coals do their magic, a few minutes later I flip them over to the other side.

"Are we talking moooo rare, or tell me how rare you like it?"

I watch as you put the steaks over the fire, using a type of basket to hold them in, that makes it easier. Once you are satisfied with the position, you pour some wine

"January 20th is locked in my head too, that was the night I met you, that's pretty important too! But yes this will be a very important day for us!" I lean in and kiss you.

After two more minutes I pull the steaks off, it's one thing about cooking over hot coals of a fire, it puts a nice sear on them and seals in all the goodness!

I open the cage and place the steaks on a platter, we will let them rest for a few minutes! I toss four ears of corn in the coals that i covered in a special butter sauce and wrapped in foil.

"I'm going to grab the potatoes from the house quick, I'll be right back"

I get everything rounded up, light a few candles and throw more logs on the fire. I'm praying that your steak is cooked properly, as I watch you cut into it.

"Well would grandpa be proud?"

I watch as you finish cooking everything. Moving quickly with confidence barely messing with the steaks. Impressive

You make a dash to get the potatoes. Then we are ready to eat.
I cut into my steak and take a bite.

"Well would grandpa be proud?"

"He would be!!! This is perfect thank you. So many can't cook a steak this rare"

I wipe my brow and let out a deep breath!

"I was concerned that if the steak wasn't right, I would be out the door! I heard Gordon Ramsey in my head the whole time!"

We ate and laughed and drank and enjoyed being together not paying attention to anything but each other. When we were all done we retired to the big double swing on the other side of the fire pit, where we could lay back and put our feet up.

"I made this out of old pallets believe it or not, and the cushion is from a futon!"

"It's funny how important it was to him how his steak was cooked He used to say takes a certain type to cook a steak right. Not necessarily a man mind you just person"

The meal was fantastic, not only the food, but the company. I don't feel any pressure to act a certain way, or say or not say something. Everything just flowed easy and natrual

I snuggle up to you, the dishes put aside to wash later. Now it's just the two of us under the night sky. You let the fire die down and the stars are so bright and clear.

I realize this is actually Bobby Hatfield singing, the other half of the Righteous Brothers! I give the swing a push with my leg and we just lay there listening to music, watching the fire and stars and falling deeper in love by the moment!

"He was!!! He was my mom's dad. Mom and I would go out there every summer! I had cousins there too. Grandpa had a big house, and us kids would sleep in a big bedroom, boys and girls, but a sheet wall between the boys and girls"

"He was a big believer in kids can work too, so we all had chores to do, not too hard and left a lot of time in the afternoon to have fun. We'd go for bicycle rides, swimming the the lake just the perfect life for a kid"
