“Be sure to take the full course of the antibiotics … yes, Mr. Hernandez, all ten pills … and I’ll want to see you next week for a follow-up … you can arrange a time with the receptionist on your way out ….”
Dr. Diana Winters stepped out of the examination room and shut the door behind her with a sigh. Thirty-five patients – it had been a long day.
Her smart black heels tapped on the tile floor of the clinic as she walked back to her office. She checked the schedule on her iPad. Mr. Hernandez was last on the list, thank God. She couldn’t wait to get home and relax. A quiet evening at home in her pajamas in front of the television was just … well … just what the doctor ordered.
At 34 she was the youngest physician in the practice. Slim and pretty, she worked hard to maintain an air of authority. While the other doctors sometimes wore scrubs around the office, Dr. Winters always dressed impeccably – gray pencil skirt, expensive cotton blouse, immaculate white coat. Her dark shoulder-length hair was always pulled back in a neat ponytail, and her large green eyes were always half-hidden behind her fashionably severe glasses.
She was in her office packing her briefcase when one of the nurses stuck her head in.
“I hope you’re not in a hurry to get out of here,” the woman said. “We’ve got a late walk-in.”
“Ugh … seriously?” Dr. Winters checked her watch. It was nearly six. “Can’t Phil see him?”
“Phil’s gone already. Said his kid had a play at school.”
“Okay … I guess my leftover noodles can wait. Did you take his vitals already?”
“Patti did right before she took off. She left his chart in the examination room. Do you want me to stick around?”
“Don’t bother. I can lock up.”
Dr. Winters walked back down the hall. The door to examination room 5 was closed. That must be where the late walk-in was. Taking her stethoscope out of her pocket, she rapped sharply on the door.
“It’s the doctor,” she said. “I’m coming in.”
