In the battle for readers, early ratings carry more weight than later ones. It's just how the maths works.

I have a spreadsheet that I update regularly (especially for newly published stories) to track the ratings for each. It doesn't give the exact sequence (was it a 4 then a 5, or the reverse), but I get a good breakdown of how many 5*s, etc. Recently, I looked at whether the ratios for each in the first 10 matched the overall split.

I found that 5-star and 1-star ratings were overrepresented in the first 10 ratings:
  • 5-stars were 78% of the first ten, but only 64% of all other ratings. Presumably driven by followers, who like what I write, being alerted to a new story being published.
  • 1-stars were 1%, against 0.3%. Because some people get a kick out of sticking the boot into new stories.
