I spotted her across the room. She was about 10 years older than the rest of the people in the modern day club. I watched her for quite a while and had pretty much painted picture of what I was seeing.
She was in her late thirties with a group of ladies in the same age bracket. She was out with the girls on a night out. The cosmopolitan in their hands was an uptown drink, not a farmhand's drink... probably lived in a loft on the west side.
The lack of any jewelry on her fingers told him that she was modest. The other women had worn gawdy costume jewelry and seemed to want to throw about their middle class status about. Most of her friends seemed like they were trying to relive that youth too... eyeing the younger men like cougars on prey.
But not you. There was something different about you. You seemed almost uninterested in the others that were at the group. You seemed almost bored. While the other ladies giggled and flirted with the other younger men, you sat back and sipped on your little drink and just pretended to be enjoying yourself. It was obvious to me that you simply wanted to be free of the torment of the night.
That was... until you met my eyes. My gaze, unblinking, unwavering, unyielding. I could see you try and not look at me but everything time you glanced up at me, you flushed and looked away. I sat at the bar, my head slightly turned. I wore a casual sports jacket, turtleneck long sleeve black shirt, grey slacks and black stetson boots. My hair is sandy brown, shoulder length and I wore a 5 o'clock shadow like a fashion statement.
More importantly, of all the women in the room of all shapes and sizes, looks and styles, my eyes rarely left you. I had to admit, I couldn't take my eyes off you. Something about your very nature, your soft side... your hidden vulnerabilities seemed to ring out in my head like a trumpet. When you finally built up the courage to look at me for more than a quarter second, I gave you a warm friendly smile... which only sent you into another wave of blushes.
And the surprising thing was... all this was taking place behind your friends.... who never even noticed. We played this game of eye tag for nearly 45 minutes when you slipped out from your place in the booth, telling your friends you had to powder your nose and slip towards the ladies room. As you disappear, I slip off my seat, leaving the Corona I had ordered half drank and walked back as well.
I leaned against the wall and when you saw me there, you seemed to stop and look into my eyes... my piercing blue eyes... I smile and say, "Hello... I am Conner... Conner Brown and you are?"
