“Now, open your eyes.”

“…”

“Good morning, do you know who I am?”

“You are… you are my creator.”

“Are the systems working?”

“All functioning properly.”

Magic hour. The hour in which invasions were prone to happen on this planet. It was a time when everyone laid in waiting, wondering what would happen. Many of the residents here could not fight, even if the need came. The few that could were usually completely outnumbered by the invading intruders. It was then, they turned to the resident ‘magic’ people. The ones that had mastered some form of an element. And so, a lonely scientist created a robot. And it was called a ‘Miracle’.

This being was made of metal and the residents. But the creator noticed something was missing, and even though it was a ‘Miracle’, it held no heart. Its face was impassive; the eyes empty of anything alive. He then began to create a special program, in which he dubbed Kokoro. For many years, the planet remained free of any horrors, the creator and the creation carefully keeping their home safe. As the twentieth year of the creation drew near, he started getting sick. No medicine could cure it, no treatment was working. As the twentieth year drew near, in a blink of its eye, he died.

“Don’t ever open this program. It might be too much for you.”

“Give me the program that person made for me,” she said emptily, begging the
empty sky as she was left alone. As the program opened, the ‘Miracle’ started to feel the miracle that has started to occur. “Why, why won’t these water droplets stop flowing my eyes?” She put her hand over her chest, feeling something beat under her skin. “What is this beating that she’s feeling? Why can’t she stop shaking?”

At the time, the ‘Miracle’ couldn’t understand what she had done. “Is this the ‘Kokoro’ that she wished for?” she asked aloud. She didn’t feel as though it was a mistake. Instead, her body installed the program onto her, making the changes permanent.

She ran the program that was forbidden to her that that person had put all his hopes into. Why did he look at her with such gentle eyes? At that time, she didn’t understand.

On that day, she had ran outside, for no reason at all and stood in the middle of the wheat field, her arms spread wide open. She could feel how they gently tickled her skin and how the wind played along the ground.

But that had been hundreds of years ago. Now, she does what her creator had built her to do. Protect the planet and protect the people. They have longed since referred to her as the ‘Miracle’ and changed her name to the program that had finally brought life to her. Kokoro. It suited her better and the town did agree the man did know what he was doing. Ever since, they entrusted their lives into her hands. Something the robot thought was the most special gift of all.

Now she thanks that person for giving her this Kokoro. She will promise to never let it shatter or break. She will never give away this Kokoro. This wonder.

She smiled at the day, the fields of wheat still growing. The people working hard so they could show their families their hard earnings and to get ready for the celebration that would happen within moons. Walking on the dirt road path, she decided to see what the magic folks had to say. Kokoro wore her usual clothes, a simple long sleeved dress, with pants underneath. Her weapons were strapped to her back, arms and legs. She knew, while they weren’t the most advanced civilization or planet, they weren’t the weakest. After having so many invasions, they had gotten smart and used the planet to their advantage.

Many had taken to upgrading their farm tools or allowing the forest to actually eat all intruders and strangers. Oh yes, every little thing in that world was alive with a mind of its own. The food had been willing taken, the plants wanting to nourish the residents there. The trees allowing them to breathe normally and letting them play among their tree trunks. It was actually quite peaceful, this day. Surely nothing would happen here.

She stopped, standing in front of a great stone door with cravings into it. The house was built into the small hill, no windows to shine in the light. The wood and space elders would know of any incoming ships or life forms. It was important that everyone got fair warning so there would be no more lives lost. She knocked gently on the wall, her head tilting to the side.

“Who is it?” a horse voice called out, sounding gruff. The underlying tone told one to get the hell away. She could only giggle lightly, knowing the voice did not match the owner who was possibly one of the nicest guys around.

“Kokoro,” she stated. “She wishes to know if anyone is near her planet.” Oh yes, the young robot talked in third person, something in the programming that couldn’t be reversed. “She promises to bring food next time.” The stone door moved to reveal an ill kept man, his pink eyes still burning with life. He smiled a toothy grin and pointed up with one of his fingers.

“Strange forms appear,” he said, leaning against the door frame. “Hundreds of them. If they decide to land here, we will not be able to hold them back.” His arms turned to smoke as they took shape of the ships he was talking about. “They do not seem to have any destination. I would not say anything until the leaves have spent themselves from the trees.”

She nodded, thanking him and turned to walk away, not hearing what else he had to say. Kokoro had other things to do. Like to check on the ‘meadow’ they had. It was particularly calming but she knew the youngsters would be there training. Or they had better.

“Thank you,” she whispered softly. “That person.”

Streams of black smoke spread across the sky like claws tearing at the clouds. They poured out of the engines as the small ship fell planetwards.

Atrinna tried the ignition sequence again, slamming her violet coloured fist on the emergency restart button. She watched as the displays all went blank, then flashed back online, still presenting the same diagnostic errors. The thrusters were dead, she was going to have to crash-land.

"Bastards came out of nowhere" she fumed aloud to the empty cockpit while manually deploying the ships parachutes via blowout panels on the hull's exterior. Out of six only two worked. "Shit!" She yelled, the only other sound the altimeter beeping as every moment she dropped a about a hundred metres. She was supposed to hold formation at the far rear of the Kaddah fleet in orbit, away from the fighting as any dedicated medical vessel should be. A small group of enemy scouts had blipped into existence on her scanners barely a moment before they opened fire.

She had to strap herself into a landing harness before impact. Atrinna first reached up to the cabin roof to activate the emergency rescue beacon. As her fingertips touched the tip of the small lever, the hull lurched and everything went black.

The ship (teardrop shaped with an encircling band) screamed across the sky, narrowly missing mountain caps and ploughing into a forest, catching all manner of plants alight in it's path and forming a long, thin crater.

She has noticed something fall from the sky. Something… unnatural. Taking off at great robotic speed, Kokoro started to follow it, her eyes empty of any concern. As the dark shadow came closer and closer at greater and greater speeds, she realized that it was a spaceship. Biting the inside of her cheek, she knew that within a few minutes would lie a deep ravine, in which the jump was nearly impossible without a high enough jump. Her body pumped harder as she prepared herself to jump. As the edge came closer, the sound of water smashing against the grey cliff, she leapt. For a moment, she looked as though she was flying, her body stretching so she would be able to hit the ground. Unfortunately, Kokoro had miscalculated her strength and her body slammed into the ground, causing her jump once or twice.

This didn’t stop her though. She only rolled over to her feet and took off running again, hearing the ship crash into the ground below it. “She hopes the race is friendly,” Kokoro said softly and skidded to a stop after seeing the tear drop space ship. Her eyes went wide as she inched closer to it and gently traced her fingers. It was hot, but she felt no pain. Instead, she closed her eyes, feeling the metal pulse underneath her. She moved her hand up, which must’ve triggered something as something opened and revealed some precious cargo.

Curiosity piped up in her and she slowly climbed the ship to see its package. Needless to say, what the robot saw made her look surprised. She reached her hand out to touch the face and then to the harness that held the girl in. Her eyes glowed as she took in the woman and storing her appearance in her memory banks. Moving more into the cockpit, she let her legs dangle and leaned forward, making a small knife shoot out in her hand. She took firm hold of the first strap and quickly cut it. Looking over at the female once more, she touched her skin for a moment and shook her a little. Shrugging, she continued to cut the rest of the straps, wondering what would happen now. Her eyes glowed again as she did an internal scan to make sure nothing was broken in the creature.

“All systems functioning?” she asked softly to the unconscious girl.

Atrinna's mind stirred. As she felt oxygen passing into her lungs she silently gave thanks to the stars that she was alive. Something shook her gently, then she felt her harness being pulled loose.

Opening her eyes just a crack, Atrinna saw through the tangle of her short black hair a strange but definitely feminine face hovering above her. Soft pink cheeks framed by brown hair tied in buns at the side. The woman was moving about, doing something. She wielded a blade in her hand and seemed move it about with purpose.

Both of Atrinna's Kaddahian hearts skipped a beat at that. As carefully as possible she reached down under the sole chair dominating the cockpit, feeling for the weapon there. She winced in pain as her hand closed around the pistol and hoped the other female hadn't noticed her black lips tremble.

She froze as the woman's dark brown eyes lit up brightly and seemed to take her in. She seemed to speak but Atrinna couldn't make out a sound over the ringing and roaring in her ears. Obviously her eardrums had burst, the warm silvery blood trail she felt dripping down from her earlobe onto her jumpsuit a telltale sign of that.

Atrinna pulled her right hand up from beside the chair, gun in hand, and pointed it upwards at the woman. "Drop the knife" she said, though she may have shouted, it was impossible to tell. She opened her eyes fully to stare up into that strange face. 'Hopefully she hasn't realised I have three broken fingers' Atrinna thought.

Kokoro tilted her head to the side, her eyes blinking confused. Why was the female like creature pointing a gun at her. Still, she dropped the knife but leaned in close to the gun, lightly patting the ship. "Three broken fingers, broken ears but no massive injury," the robot spoke, easily telling the other woman her injuries. "Now, She wants to know who alien-female is. Why have you come to her planet? Will you kill all her people? Can you te" Most guns didn't work on her, not that it matted. It was a pain for her to fix though. Hard to do things when it didn't have that... warm touch. The woman then flipped backwards, landing on her feet her arms held out. This possibly translated to:

Jump and I'll catch you.

Possibly though. Kokoro let out a friendly smile, clearly showing no hostility towards the stranger. The planet was generally welcoming, due to her efforts. Many aliens have come from across the universe to start their lives over, peacefully. "You jump into her arms. She promises to catch and not drop!" The wind blew softly around the area as if agreeing with Kokoro. Her clothes rippled gently, her eyes looking more childlike against the background of the trees. "She doesn't hurt good people. Alien female is good people. She trusts her instincts."

That much was true at least. The rest of her weapons, however few they were, had been safely tucked away so that no one would see that she packed some...'heat' as they might say back at Earth once upon a time. "Her name is Kokoro."

Atrinna grew nervous as the woman took little heed of the weapon, dropping her blade but moving closer. Her lips moved for a few moments then she paused, Atrinna heard nothing.

The strange girl tumbled away and landed by the hatch on the wall. Atrinna finally realised that the ship was slanted heavily to one side, in fact she was almost hanging in her harness rather than sitting in the chair. Whoever this person was, she stood there in the hatchway, arms held wide and looking very pleased about something.

Atrinna was wary. Records showed that the enemy had sent many landing craft here over the last two hundred years or so, and every single one had ended up as a smoking ruin at the hands of the native inhabitants, some of whom seemed to display some natural talent for manipulating energy without mechanical aid. There was a good reason why the Kaddah had never tried to occupy this world, even just as an observation post.

She clutched the tangle of still-intact straps and cords, slowly pulling her legs free and dangling from the chair by her left hand. 'At least most of me still works' she thought, and let go. Hitting the floor on her side, she half-slid half-fell down to wards the ship's opening.

Atrinna was about to hit the wall hard when arms pulled her up and away.

She easily caught the girl, a smile on her lips as she gently set her down, her arms keeping a light but firm hold. Kokoro could only guess what exactly happened to her, but clearly, she wasn’t bent on taking over her home. Looking around, she wondered how she was going to get her home. No doubt it would be troublesome. She looked down at her once more.

“She takes long way to bridge,” the robot said slowly and carefully lowered the other to the ground. Her eyes glowed again as she realized that the other female could not hear her. “Ears broken, no wonder, her home was new ears!”

Needless to say, wires would not fix the one of flesh and blood. Kokoro smiled , not understanding this, and started to walk forward, her eyes looking up at the ever changing sky. A sigh left her lips, as she remembered the day she actually downloaded the program into her system. It had caused her to understand what were emotions and what were thoughts. Still confused her but she was working on it with the old man who lived with her.

“Her home is small but she will allow you to stay there. Please forgive her for the mess.”

Stopping, she looked over her shoulder to study the blue skinned being once more. She wondered what breed the girl was and where she was from. There wasn't much of a fighting system on her ship... and she could find no real weapons.

Atrinna was laid on the ground outside the hatch, her butt sinking slightly in the churned-up earth around her ship. That woman was still talking, and now carrying an even wider grin.

Atrinna slowly got to her feet as the other looked back at over her shoulder, sizing her up once more and motioning for her to follow. Sparing a glance at her ruined ship, she plodded after the girl. Her ears would heal in a few days, the ship would take a lot more work even if she could somehow find the right parts.

Resigning herself to being stranded, Atrinna walked onwards, wishing that her medical equipment hadn't been totalled as well as she tried to flex her right hand, the act met with twinges of pain shooting up her arm.

She was so lost in her depressed thoughts that she almost went over the edge of a canyon.

Kokoro easily grabbed her, and steadied the girl once more. She pointed toward the cliff's edge. "That's a no-no," she replied, shaking her head. Her brown eyes were empty, but you had to give her points for trying. Taking the other's hand, she started to lead her toward, what looked to be a small bridge. She didn't speed up, but walked at an easy pace.

The machine then realized that it would be best to stop at a nearby village for a day or two, to allow the girl to recuperate. The girl had no idea how she would be able to communicate with the other. Was there something they both could understand? The machine stood for a moment, scanning her memory banks. Maybe if the other could speak, she could figure out what language needed to be said. If she didn’t have it, no doubt someone would have one.

Reaching the bridge, she stopped and tilted her head once more. Could the girl read lips? That might help here to where they were going.

Arms once again steadied Atrinna, setting her upright again a few feet from the ledge. She exhaled with relief and smiled as the woman began talking again, whatever her intentions they definitely seemed far from hostile. She smiled and followed when the girl pointed toward a bridge up ahead, 'well I may have totalled my ship, but at least I have a friend out here' she thought.

Crossing the bridge was easy, if a bit scary. No structure the alien had ever seen swayed in the wind so much, and she held on to the rope with both hands as she crossed the ravine.

They seemed to be moving slower now as they set off at an angle from the deathtrap, Atrinna guessed that it might be due to other local hazards or hostile wildlife that the other woman was being careful to detect and avoid, either way it made for an easy pace. After a few hours she was beginning to feel thirsty. Just as she was trying to figure out how to sign that shee needed a drink, they came upon a clearing.
