The Graduation Present: closed for AmandaAce

I stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding a plane ticket in my hand.

“What?” I said, looking from the ticket to my parents in disbelief.

“St. Thomas!” My mother sort of shouted the words and clapped her hands. “Aren’t you excited? It’s your graduation present. Well, your graduation and birthday present.” I’d turned eighteen last week, and in the business surrounding graduation, my birthday had been pretty much swept under the rug.

I was so confused. My present was supposed to be money, for dorm supplies and clothes and shit, not a trip to some island. I looked at the ticket again. Then it hit me. This was awesome, they were giving me an awesome present.

“I’m bringing Justin, okay?” I said, reaching for my phone. The thought of spending a week in the Caribbean with my boyfriend was almost enough to make up for the fact that we’d be heading to different schools in the fall. And for the fact that between my parents and his parents and two siblings, we were never alone, not even for a second.

“No,” my father said. He laughed a little bit as he said it, like the idea was so preposterous. “You’re not taking Justin.”

“Well, I’m not going alone,” I replied, looking at my mother. “Mom?”

“No, you’re not going alone, honey. You’re going with Matt.” My face fell immediately. Matt was cool, but shit. We weren’t even really friends anymore – we were into totally different things and hung out with totally different people. Plus, his girlfriend didn’t like me, for whatever reason. A week on an island with Matt was going to be awkward as fuck. And what was Justin going to say?

“Mom,” I started to whine, but my dad cut me off, raising his hand and looking at me sternly.

“You’re going with Matt or you’re not going. And you guys are driving yourselves to the airport,” he said. “So either go upstairs and call him or give the ticket back.”

I shrugged my shoulders. “Okay, I’m sorry. Thank you.” The gratitude wasn’t fake, I wanted to go to the damn island, but this was ridiculous. I kissed them both on the cheek and ran upstairs.

I realized when I got upstairs that I didn’t have Matt’s number, and I flopped back onto the bed. I was going to have to break the news to Justin, and he was going to flip his shit.
When the doorbell rang I didn’t even pay any attention until my mother yelled up the stairs.

“Jess! Matt’s here!” I got up from the bed and glanced in the mirror, adjusting the straps of my top. My hair was a mess but I didn't give a shit -- I was more concerned about this stupid trip. Maybe Matt would have some ideas about what to do.

"Hang on!" I shouted, and ran down the stairs.

It was clear that both of us had our doubts about this trip, but what were we going to do? I looked up at Matt, trying not to stare at his body, which was not an easy task. He had always been cute, but in the last couple of years he'd gotten exponentially hotter. I'd noticed his muscles when he hugged me and almost lifted me off the floor, but I hadn't gotten a good look until we came upstairs. His body was ridiculous. It was no wonder Justin acted so fucked up when I hung out with him.

"Plus," I said, stretching out to lay on my stomach, "You know, I know your girlfriend doesn't like me, and you know how Justin is."

Matt nodded and I glanced over at him. He was still wearing his work uniform, and his shirt was tight, pulling up to expose his bicep. I ignored it as best I could, and rested my head on his leg. Looking up at him, I made a face.

"Did you tell her yet?" I asked.

"No," he replied, making the same face. "She's gonna be so pissed, I don't even know what to say."

"Me either," I said. "Justin is going to flip out." He nodded again. Justin was going to flip out. And probably with good reason. I couldn't lie to myself, I wasn't exactly sad about the prospect of seeing Matt walk around shirtless for an entire week.

"So what do you want to do about the airport?" I asked him, sitting up. I jumped off the bed and began to rummage through my dresser drawers. I started throwing bathing suits into a pile next to me. "I'll drive, I don't care."

Standing up again, I held up one of the suits. "Should I just bring like all of these? Or what? What are we gonna do besides go to the beach?"

As soon as he closed the door behind him, I let out a huge sigh of relief. I sank to the floor, picking up the clothes and setting them on the bed. What the hell was that hug about? I hadn’t meant for it to go quite like that, but I didn’t necessarily mind either. Neither did Matt, from the way he’d hugged me back. Fuck. The trip hadn’t even started yet and already things were getting out of hand.

I dragged my suitcase out of the closet and opened it. As I started to pack, my phone rang. I dove over the bed and grabbed it without thinking.

“Hello?” I said, flopping backwards onto the bed. Some of the clothes that lay piled on the bed drifted down to the floor.

“What are you doing?” I closed my eyes at the sound of Justin’s voice. Dammit, I hadn’t even rehearsed this yet.

“Nothing,” I said. “Actually, well, I’m packing. To go to St. Thomas.”

“What?” he said. “When? With your parents? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Scrunching my face up, I replied to his questions in one run-on sentence. “Yeah, soon, with Matt, and I just found out.” Justin was completely silent. “It’s our graduation present, and his parents and my parents – it’s just this thing.”

“You’re going. To St. Thomas. With fucking Matt,” he said, his voice becoming more and more incredulous with each statement.

“It’s just this thing--” I repeated.

“This is ridiculous,” he interrupted. “Of all the people you could have gone with, you’re going with him? Not Caitlin or Amber or any of your friends, you’re going with Matt?”

“I told you, our parents---” I couldn’t even get a word in edgewise. As predicted, Justin was fucking flipping out.

“Is that girl going? Is his girlfriend going?” Justin couldn’t have sounded more suspicious if he’d tried. There was nothing I could say that would make him cool with this.

“No, she’s not going. It’s just us.” I got up off the bed and resumed throwing clothes into my luggage. I had too much shit to do, I couldn’t let Justin stop me from packing.

“Jess, what the actual fuck? Are you telling me that you’re really doing this?” Now he sounded hurt, and as much as I could understand his feelings (if the situation were reversed, I’d have been pissed, too), I couldn’t help but feel like he was being a little inconsiderate of mine.

“It is my graduation present from my parents, Justin. Yes, I am really going. Yes, I am really going with Matt. No, it is not a big deal. Okay? Just calm down and trust me. I’ve known him forever, everything will be fine, I will be back in a week. Now look, I have to go, okay? I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay, well at least let me drive you to the airport!”

“It’s so early in the morning, Justin, it isn’t worth it. I’ll call you when I get there, okay? Love you.”

I hung up the phone before he could reply. Picking up another pile of clothes from the floor, I started placing them in the suitcase, paying special attention to my black dress -- I didn't want it to get wrinkled. I realized how much stuff I had to do before we left, and I took a deep breath and packed faster.

I woke up somewhere over the water and rubbed my eyes. My neck hurt really bad, and as I opened my eyes all the way, I realized it was because I had been sleeping with my face smushed against Matt's shoulder. He was leaning back against the head rest with his eyes closed, and I sat up carefully, taking down my ponytail and running my hands through my hair. Ugh. I felt so gross and tired. I couldn't wait until we got there so I could get a shower. Fuck the beach, all I wanted to do was wash my face and hair.

I glanced over at Matt. Maybe he wasn't asleep. Extending a finger, I poked him in the arm. He didn't respond.

"Matt," I whispered. He still didn't respond, so I poked him harder. "Matthew," I said.

"What, Jess?" he mumbled.

"Move your arm," I said, grabbing his wrist and pulling at his arm. He lifted it sleepily and I pulled it around me so that I could put my head on his shoulder more comfortably.

"Thank you," I said, but he didn't answer. He probably didn't even hear me. I fell back asleep quickly, and I don't think either of us woke up again until the plane landed.

The sun in St. Thomas was ridiculously bright, and I dug in my bag for my sunglasses as we walked out of the airport. It was hot as fuck, too, especially after the freezing plane. Matt, of course, had dressed for the hot weather, so he was fine. I rolled my eyes at him as I started sweating.

"Oh my God, I can't wait to get to the condo and take a shower and change," I muttered. I wasn't kidding, I felt like I was melting. It was a few minutes before one of those colorful buses came by, and my entire face fell as Matt started toward it.

"Matt," I said quietly, "Where is the fucking car?" He just looked at me like I was an idiot. There was no car? We were going to have to ride in these cabs and shit? Didn't our parents love us? Why were they treating us like animals?

I blew out a huge sigh and stepped up onto the bus, dragging my bag behind me. Matt sat down next to me, and I turned to him.

"As soon as we get there, I'm taking a shower," I said, and leaned back against the seat, fanning myself with my hand.
