Romantic indeed. And there are some who still do that. They are considered 'Art Knife' makers. I have seen some beautiful pieces made by twisting railroad spikes then hammer forging the blade.

But what I will be involved in is the Tactical Knife idustry. Using a 20 lb hammer to make a 3 1/2" folding knife blade somehow doesn't picture. Even more so when that blade is not made from High carbon steel but S30V tool steel. And handles that are not leather wrapped wood but titanium with G10 inserts.

This is the production version of the prototype Darrel gave me a few weeks ago.
