The Isle of Perpetual Torment

As they discussed all manner of possibilities the scream of a terrified animal split the night air like a knife. It was followed by the roaring of a much larger, more ferocious animal. They both sat in silence and listened to the sounds of a struggle for life that ended quickly.
“Damien, there’s something out there that sounds very big and very hungry and I don’t think it’s an alien.”

"That sounds like a mesothorin and a gaboryn fighting!" Damian said with excited recognition as he shot to his feet and headed toward the cave's entrance. "Well, I'll be..." He said in awe.

"A what and a what fighting? What the hell are you talking about? There are no such things! What are you looking at?" She went to the cave opening to see what he found so interesting.

"What? Oh, uh... Dinosaurs, big beasts, they went extinct a long time ago, you know? Never seen Land of the Lost?" He asked, pointing one of the creatures out to Angela. "See?" He asked as he nudged her "Big, huh?" He asked, seeming almost unconcerned by the sight before them.

Angie looked at the huge beasts ripping each other apart and turned ghostly pale. Slowly she backed away from the entrance of the cave, and away from Damien. Things were not right here, not with the island, not with the creatures or plants, and certainly now with him. It was as if everything he knew came from watching television. She felt the rough all of the cave against her back and more then ever, she felt trapped and terrified.

"Wow, look at em go... Its just like from that movie, Jurassic... Um... Help me out here, Jurassic..." He snapped his fingers as it came to him. "Park! Yeah, thats it!" He turn to look at Angela, excited over the sight outside.

"Angela? Are you okay? You look white as a sheet." He stepped toward her, noticing her inching back from him. He tilted his head curiously at her. "Whats the matter? You're looking at me like I'm Darth bloody Vader..."

"You are like some kind of walking TV guide. There are giant sized lizards eating each other right out side and you think it's the discovery chanel. I'm just waiting for some guy to pup out and offer to Pimp My Ride or give me an Overhall. Change the chanel back to reality for a second and tell me what the frack is going on here." She reached down and picked up a rock and held it out. "Don't come any closer or i swear i'll crown you."

"Pimp my Ride? I'm afraid I don't know that show..." Damian muttered as he stood still. "Isn't it obvious, Angela? Someone, or something is playing with us. This island probably isn't an island at all, but some gigantic play pen from which we can be observed..." Damian looked at the rock in Angela's hands and shook his head. "You don't need that, I am no threat to you, I'm stuck here, just like you..." He sighed as he went back over to warm himself by the fire. He maintained the calm, almost humored demeanor that he had since the Dinosaurs had shown up.

“Ä giant play pen?” She was beyond scared now, now she was just really pissed off.
“OK TV boy, so this isn’t an island, it’s an illusion, and I have been abducted by big scary aliens, and you are a shape shifter who moonlights as Captain Kirk on your days off, and any moment now Yoda is going to waltz through the entrance and invite us to dinner. I don’t know what planet you come from but on my world you would be locked up for being completely INSANE!!!”

Damian remained silent through Angela's rant, shaking his head in amusement a couple of times. When she was done, Damian stood up, and looked into Angela's eyes. "Firstly, they're not big and scary, they're actually formless, sort of like mist, only their center glows with life energy. Second, I'm no shape shifter, contrary to your TV, most sentiant humanoids are just that, humanoid, very few posess any significant special traits. Thirdly, I don't know what planet I come from either, to be quite honest. And last, but not least, that is the very reason that our captors have put us in this environment, its controled, you see, no fear of either of us being brought to harm... Unless you intend to hit me with that rock..." Damian gave Angela a wry smile as he finished.

Angela stood perfectly still, her mouth agape, unable to make a sound while she tried to absorb this new information. She must be dreaming. This couldn’t be real? Things like this only happened on TV, or in badly written fictional books.
Glancing down at the rock in her hand, she wondered if perhaps she shouldn’t crown herself with this rock. As silent tears made their way down her dirt streaked face, her head began to spin and world turned dark. She reached out her hand as she fell and dropped the rock “Damian…” She fainted.

The Watcher smiled as the panic began to control each and every movement of Angela and Damien. He knew when he projected the holigrams that the response would be instantanious and cause Angela to react in an emotional manner. He knew that Damien would be the reassuring factor in this contest and if it were to be successful all characters would have to play their part.

In the meantime Lacey stired and the Watcher knew it would not be long before she awakened and he would be forced to deal with her in some fashion. He would have liked to have her in the contest but she was much too down to earth, too pragmatic to be fooled by his trickory. But she was beautiful to gaze at and he liked the idea of keeping her as a "companion" as he manipulated the rest of the players.

Damien caught Angela as she was about to hit the ground and carefully layed her down and covered her with a grass mat she had woven. She slept restfully while Damien wondered to himself just what exactly the two of them had been caught up in........
