I shudder everytime I see someone write "I am a dominate" or something of that nature. We've had threads on the topic before... it hasn't seemed to help. Let's face it, some people are better with language than others.

Some of this goes back to the old leather or old guard schools

Yes, some people are better with language than others. As a former English teacher, I'm well aware of that :p

However, I only picked on this one word on purpose. One expects engineers to be able to properly use and spell engineering terms; architects to be able to properly use and spell architectural terms; medical professionals to be able to properly use and spell medical terms... why should we not expect people who profess to make BDSM (Bondage & Discipline/Dominance-submission/Sadism-Masochism) their "lifestyle" to be able to properly use and spell the terminology of the culture? I don't quibble over occasional grammatical errors, punctuation errors, or typos. I've made enough of them myself. But consistent misuse of the terminology of their culture ... well, draw your own conclusion. I've probably hurt enough feelings and insulted enough people for tonight.

Newp ... right there with you. It's one thing to speak badly ... call it the mouth moving without the brain engaged. It's a different ballgame with the written word. If you have the time to write it, as someone recently posted in a pet peeve you have the time to spellcheck it and double check the results for "garbage in, garbage out" by the programmer.

While I agree with you, I can see the flaw in your argument. Engineers, architects, doctors, lawyers etc have to study to reach that profession. Whereas there is no certification process required to participate in BDSM.

BDSM is a group of enthusiasts who share common interests. And really, that's all it is. Despite rumours to a mistique, of an "old guard", of training schools and the like.

So many people who enjoy BDSM can't spell. Or mis-use the English grammar. Or even worse, are foreigners! :p It's annoying for those of us who are language pedants (myself included), but something we just have to live with.

Public forum participation is often an exercise in forebearance, understanding and patience.

Good night, lit.

Be well.
Be safe.
Have fun.

I will probably be back in a few hours as I can't sleep through the night, but until then. *kisses*

Yes, they have to study to practice their profession. But wouldn't one expect that someone who professed their lifestyle to be a particular culture to study that culture, including terminology and usage of that terminology?

Yes, forum participation can be an exercise in all of those virtues you mention... especially the last, which is sometimes not in great supply in this Dominant/Master.

Will agree, but zapping you in your other favorite thread of mine.

Just because I can't spell... :(

Lit needs a built in spell checker. One with UK English, of course!

Certainly. On the other hand, some people (myself included) can exit University with a degree and still misspell consistently. For example, for some reason I always spell weird incorrectly (and have to go back and correct it.)

Study doesn't guarantee the use of correct terminology.

Also keep in mind that a large part of the attraction of BDSM is the emphasis on "I did it my way!" The Dominant/Dominate ( :p ) is in control, after all. So it's fantasy fulfilment. Why do you need to study for that?

Okay, so I can't spell mystique either...

But, you spelled consistently correctly ... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/363868/2cool2.gif

i'll take your comment at other than face value. An inexperienced PYL may have the fantasy to single tail whip someone. i'd rather see that individual do a little book time to find out how not to do it, understand the ramifications if they do it wrong, and find a mentor before putting stroke one on a live body.
