Hee, it does kind of look like that in the picture! But no, it's on my upper right arm. That's my shoulder in the picture. I was tired of having monochrome tattoos that nobody could see when I was dressed (upper thigh and middle back) so I got a color one where I could just lift up my shirt sleeve or even go sleeveless and everybody could see it!

*smiles* It is ASL. It's the single sign. What you learned was saying ME LOVE YOU, which is sometimes used for special emphasis, like "I really really love you so much and I want you to know that." But ILY (the name of this handshape) is used in all kinds of situations. Waving goodbye, between close friends, or even just a kind of "I love all of you, the general populace, everybody watching."

I have been involved with the Deaf community my whole life, I have worked as an interpreter for five years (fully certified now) and I am attending Gallaudet University in the fall, the world's only liberal arts university for the deaf. I figured it was time to get a tattoo that would be representative of that! ILY is recognized in some other countries around the world; even if they use a different sign language (like Australia, UK, etc) they still recognize ILY.

I have a Spanish language DVD set from the library right now, but I'd be happy to get the name of the CD/book set from you. It feels very limiting to not know what's being said around me, even when it's just being there when the gardener and J are discussing landscaping things, so I'd *ideally* like to know some Spanish by the time I go back.

I know a bunch of people who swear by the Rosetta Stone sets. They are expensive, a couple hundred dollars per level, but they are used by the federal government including the CIA, so they have an excellent reputation. They have a version for Latin American Spanish if that interests you.

They are also good and even better if you know someone who can download them for you free, but I found they weren't as good as the set I bought in that Rosetta Stone doesn't so much go into teaching the grammar and overall pronunciation rules, instead getting you to repeat words from pictures on the screen. With the set I bought, I have found it so much easier learning the grammar and pronunciation rules, as minimalistic as it is, which can then be transferred to other situations where you come up against understanding something elsewhere. A combination of the 2 are perfect.
