I wish I could do the shopping and planning of the amenities, furnishings and appliances as well as dishes for vacation homes sometimes.

I'm like that, too. I can spend hours in bed, bath and beyond pretending to decorate and organize everyone I know's house. I decide what I'd get if I was rich and buying it for them. It's way too much fun, an dprobably a good thing I don't take money with me into that store. It's worse (for me) than Costco.

Let me just say that whoever does do the shopping/planning of what is in vacation homes is not able to make what I consider good ergonomic decisions in many cases. I like beauty. I also like utility, reliability and ease. I don't understand how some of these decisions could be made. I go with function over form every time but form is important to me.

Yes. Functional aesthetic beauty. It's like the people have never seen the inside of someplace like The Container Store or IKEA.

I wouldn't want to furnish a vacation home from IKEA as I'd be afraid of having to replace the furniture within a year or two. Much of what I've seen there is simply not well enough built to survive being handled by lots of folks. Rentals need to be beautifully sturdy.

No, but they have good design ideas in terms of comfortable functionality... just duplicate it with better built furnitute.

I give IKEA a strong B for design and a C- for quality overall. Now, some of their higher-end pieces are fairly well built. When shopping there, look at the construction of the drawers and the materials in the drawer slides. In particular, if the drawer bottoms are thin pieces of cardboard, walk over to the next higher-priced item until you find one with more durable materials.

I cannot speak for the quality of their couches and futons from experience, but the ones with metal frames look reasonably sturdy, as do some of the wood-framed couches at the upper end of the price range.

Where IKEA really shines, I think, is in its attractive and often funky side pieces, accessories, and decorative objects.

Honestly, things like the dishwasher blocking the cabinets in which you would put the dishes away piss me off.

I have furniture that I bought from IKEA years ago. The stuff is absolutely great. Of course, I was really picky about what I bought. Went for solid wood. Figure it's going to last me forever. But then I'm really careful with things too. <shrugs>

On another note, my Master is really sick. Picked up the flu from his co-workers & friends. It sucks not being able to do anything for him.
