Emily Sawyer drove through town looking for help wanted signs. She had graduated college and wanted to find a job quickly so she could move out from her parent's home. She loved her parents, but the time had come for her to move out. She wanted to start building her own life and that needed privacy from her parents. She had finished her degree in childhood education and had applied for a few teaching jobs in the areas around her hometown, but they wouldn't start until the next school year. Emily was looking for a summer job and wanted to start saving money. Emily was your standard college co-ed, brunette hair, blue eyes about 5'6 and a toned body from the running and yoga she enjoyed.

She pulled in to the diner and waved at her friends, she was meeting them their for lunch and was excited to catch up with them. The three girls chatted as they ordered their lunch and ate. Emily's friends were both going to be going back to school in the fall as they were going to grad school. They had found summer jobs working in their fields and were starting next week. Emily told them she was still looking but was sure something was going to come up.

As they chatted the waitress who was the town gossip stopped over to chat and smiled at Emily, "I heard something that may come in handy for you dear." Emily perked up, she was always up for something to help, "what did you hear Polly?" Polly grinned, "you know Mr. Tucker? Well his wife just left him and their cute little child. Can you imagine?" Polly shook her head, "word is he is looking for a nanny for the summer for their daughter so she is ready to start school in fall." Emily nodded, "I will give him a call." After Polly walked away Emily's two friends smiled at her, "Mr. Tucker is hot, it wouldn't suck to see him everyday." Emily just laughed, it was true she had always thought he has hot, but he was also 10 years older than them so no doubt wasn't interested.

After lunch Emily decided it was better to just drive over to Mr. Tucker's house. She was nervous about just showing up unannounced but she wanted to show initiative. She softly knocked on the door in case it was nap time and crossed her fingers he decided to give her the job.

Oliver and his wife Nikki had a knockdown, drag-out verbal fight, and Nikki made a lot of nasty remarks about Oliver being useless and everything she could say to drown him in doubt and fear, but that didn’t work. Oliver worked his ass off; he might have had some gaps, but he thought how Nikki was painting him was even that inaccurate. But she said whatever she could to get a reaction out of him, but it didn’t work. Oliver knew Nikki’s goal was to make him a monster and try to get him to raise his voice so she could make a fake police report, but it wouldn’t hold up. Oliver stuck to the main rooms of the house: living room and kitchen until he got Nikki out of the house...

“You can get your shit when I have the cops hear. I don’t trust you being in the house without me, and the cops.” Oliver pulled a bag out of the downstairs closet by the front door and placed it before Nikki... “What the fuck is this shit!!??” Nikki screamed as she opened the bag and started pulling clothes. “These are clothes you’ve had for over a year, never worn. Some still have the tags on them, but this is your leaving bag until the cops are able to be here with me because I will not let you, nor do I trust you.”

Nikki had half the bag dumped on the table before she realized her plan to try and get Oliver tossed in jail wouldn’t work. Stuffing the bag, Nikki stormed out of the house and left Oliver to raise Olive all alone.

The noise inside the house wasn’t too loud, but Mr. Tucker heard a faint knocking sound as his Alexa show told him there was someone at the front door. He was wrestling with the little one but finally came to the door as he was holding the baby. “Hello...??” Mr. Tucker looked at Emily’s as he wasn’t expecting company, and her age was a bit of a shock to him.

Adjusting his daughter Olivia in his hands, he first thought she had the wrong house and then secondly he assumed she was wanting to sell him something which he didn’t need or want but made a small questioning comment in his mind. ‘Are the door-to-door sales people making a comeback??’ “I’m sure you’re not a sales person, but I’m wondering what brings you to my doorstep...”

Emily blushed as she saw Mr. Tucker answer the door. She always found his attractive when she saw him around town. She looked at the little girl in his arms and smiled gently at her. Emily giggled a little bit when he asked if she was a sales person, "no Sir. Polly from the diner told me you might be looking for a nanny for the little cutie in your arms. I came to see if this was true. If it is, I would love to apply for the position."

Emily looked at the little girl, "she is adorable by the way. I just graduated from college with my education degree and will be starting as a teacher in the fall, but I want to get more experience with children during the summer." Emily smiles at the little girl, "I would love to spend time with her this summer and help out around the house. Polly mentioned she would be going to school this fall and I could help her get ready." Emily hopes she isn't making herself sound too desperate.

Emily smiled, "I know I gave you a lot to think about." Emily blushed and mentally yelled at herself, she barely let him get a word in edge wise, "I will leave you my resume and hope to hear from you. Sorry for barging in." Emily left her resume and started walking back to her car. She got in a drove home, hoping to hear from him soo. Emily got home only to find it empty as both her parents were working.

Emily started to make dinner for her parents after they worked all day and they could all sit down and enjoy a meal together. As she was cooking she heard her phone ring and ran to answer it, in case it was Mr. Tucker.

Oliver was a little shocked by Emily’s interest and the forward-thinking of coming to Oliver’s doorstep. As she explained the situation that she was told about by her friend Polly ad the diner, Oliver wasn’t happy, as his face showed a stone-blank look while he took a step back and watched Emily speak.

As she left him a resume, he thought about it for the whole information overload as he was hoping to talk to Emily, but he needed to think about things and not say anything that would make things worse or get himself backed into a corner. As Oliver noticed the email address on her resume, he sat down and started to send her an email.

“Well, I guess I should say thank you for the help that you want to give me and my daughter…. BUT... this isn’t going to be a simple yes from me. You will need to not only meet some requirements, but I will say this is going to be a good employment. Deal for you, but there are going to be rules and conditions.” Oliver leaned against the wall as his eyes trailed over Emily as he was trying to get his mind wrapped around what he was thinking.

Oliver thought of what he wrote as he double-checked and even doubted himself for what he was doing, letting a young woman into his house, but he knew he would only have a few days before he needed to get back to the office.

“... in the next few days, I will need to head back to the office, and I think your offer is good, but we need to set down and make ground rules and see if you can meet the requirements and make Olivia your summer project... again, I appreciate you coming to me with the offer, and I hope to hear from you tomorrow. Please come back by the house, and I will have a contract writer here so we can hopefully get it sorted out, and you can start working...”

Oliver read over the email many times before he even thought it was a good idea to send it to Emily... letting out a sigh, Oliver hit the send button on the screen, and off the email went as he hoped that Emily was serious about helping. As Oliver got Olivia to bed before he decided to shower, get ready for bed, and fell asleep, his eyes were thinking of Emily.

After dinner with her parents Emily checked her email to see if she had gotten any more information about job offers for the fall. She was surprised to see an email from Mr. Tucker. She read the email and nodded, it made sense that he would want to hash out the details. She responded, "I will be there tomorrow around 10 if that works?" She was excited and started to think about some items she might want included in the contract as well.

In the morning Emily showered and got dressed in a pair of basic black dress pants and a blouse. She wanted to look professional, but not over the top as she was meeting for a nanny position. She drove over to Mr. Tucker's home with her list of items she wanted to discuss and arrived promptly at 9:55. She wanted to show she can be on time for this position. As she knocked on the door she was a little nervous, but excited about the possibilities.

She smiled at Olivia and asked how her morning was going as they chatted in the living room while Mr. Tucker got everything situated. Emily found it natural to chat with Olivia and play with her. Emily giggled as they played with her play kitchen, and Olivia told her she was baking a cake, "what kind of cake?" Emily believed in making small talk and asking questions about play time to help Olivia learn more words and how to talk in complete sentences. Finally Mr. Tucker came over and said everything was ready and Emily followed him to the dining room so they could chat.

Emily sat and took her list out of her purse, "I hope you don't mind I have a few items that I thought we should discuss." Emily's list was very simple, but included things like educational trips to the zoo and the children's museum. She also said she would work 5 days a week from 8:30 until 6 to account for travel time for Mr. Tucker. She went over the list and was nervous when it was time for him to discuss his list of rules.

Upon reviewing Emily’s request list, Oliver observed that she did not intend to reside with him during her nannying period, which was his plan should he need to depart. Consequently, he decided to inquire directly. “So, you are seeking compensation for driving from your residence to hers? I had initially intended for you to reside in a guest room and contribute to the household, eliminating the need for your frequent visits.

The 8:30-6:00 timeframe is acceptable, but I had planned to offer a higher compensation for a 24/7 presence. Additionally, you will have access to the kitchen, and I have an individual who delivers groceries to the house. Therefore, you are not obligated to conduct grocery shopping unless you require items not delivered during the week.”

Oliver took a closer examination of Emily this time, paying more attention to her appearance than the previous evening. During this observation, he noticed something peculiar that intrigued him and prompted further contemplation.

Oliver was taking a few days from work to get his daughter Olivia situated before he returned and he did not want to have any more issues, especially with a nanny.
