Robert Heinlein once wrote that one of the chinks in the armor of any democracy is that when the plebs find out they can vote themselves bread and circuses, they do -- but, in actual historical fact, no democracy has ever died of that and many have benefited from it.

Their problem is not an overgenerous welfare state. It has to do with fiscal policy, and putting too much reliance on oil, the price of which has dropped.
