The Official Authors' Hangout Summer Lovin' 2024 Contest Support Thread

My story is fighting me. I’ve scrapped most of it twice now, but I’m still hoping to get it done in time for the contest.

My Halloween one is doing the same to me. I'm displeased about it.
The thing I hate about Halloween stories is that they demand to be erotic horror - but erotic horror is ignored on Lit. The readers hate it.

The obvious choices are to write a totally EH story with witches and stuff (very few views) or to strip out anything supernatural and simply go with a costumes-and-candy theme, which is usually uninteresting to write. For me, anyway.

I've tried, at times, to tread a middle ground, and that's not all that easy. This one has good bones, but it's suffering under its own weight. I don't want to abandon it, but I probably will.

I wrote an EH story that I thought was pretty good and so far it's gotten 5200 views. For 10 months.

How do you guys do that? It makes my eyeballs ache just to send a 6 word text.
Yep, it's certainly not ideal, but I spend a lot of time on public transport, and it's a great way to make the time go faster...that and checking out the women around me! 😉 I much prefer writing on my computer at home!

I just got a 10" iPad with keyboard for remote working. I detest MS Word on Apple anything (I used to support Word on Mac Clones) but it works

My top story is 129,140 views... but I posted it 09/03/2006

I just checked. Mine is 178,410. It's a damn good story, too. 17 June 2020.

Crazy. I don't usually pay as much attention to views as I should.

Woo hoo, I'm out of prison (the Mickey Spillane Hammered Challenge), and now into the bright, beautiful sunshine for the Summer Lovin' Challenge! Nude diving and interracial beach sex...now in process...and hot, hot, hot! 🔥🔥🔥

Got any backup ideas? I'm not saying give up, but maybe let it sit on the shelf for a while and see if it's just waiting for its time.

You read my mind! Precisely what I’m doing. I knew this story would be a bit of a challenge. In this one, I was hoping to cater to those of us who find small breasted women just as sexy as the DD ladies. It’s not as easy as I thought it would be. So I’ve parked it and started with a more tried and true idea.

I think I'm in. I've finished a first draft. I like it well enough that I'm willing to put in the time on editing it. The downside is that the only possible category is Erotic Couplings. That's simply what this story is. In a contest, at least, an EC story can get more attention.

The new story just hit 2K words. This one should work, although I doubt it will top 5K. Short and sweet. Not as original as my first attempt, but that one will come later.

I’m *going* to get there. I’ve written a few thousand words the last few days and I have the whole vision in my head. Lots of work left to do and significant rewriting to early pages. This story is actually one I started 3 years ago and then let whither, but I’m cooking now. I think I’m a better fiction writer now, so the older sections are going to need refreshing.

With nothing published since last year, it feels really good to be writing again. I think I can capture this momentum and get a few more things out this year. The Halloween contest will be an enticement too.

I'm trying to get mine but I'm nearing 5k yet still haven't got to the real action. I've been told background story is important to make the story stand but I don't know if in this case, I'm adding too much. Things are supposed to get hot soon and I hope if I finish it on time and submit it (and it is accepted), that readers will still read it to the end and not stop midway.

10k is my cutoff. If my characters haven't at least kissed by then, I know the story is too full of itself. I usually abandon it if so.

My current WIP is at 5303 and the guy is only just now thinking about the girl when he masturbates. They'll get into sexual double-entendres after that, and then there'll be a set-piece in a swimming pool where I'll try to make them kiss around 9.5k. It feels like it's going to end up somewhere about 25k words.

None of that is planned out any more tightly than I've just typed it. I'm just judging from my past tendencies. Who knows what my characters will want to do?

You've got time, lol.

Mine's cumming along nicely. I was wondering how my FMC was going to move on from the FWB relationship, but a side character invited her to go clubbing. Problem solved. 😎

I had a story all done and ready to go by two or three months ago. Then I opened it last week to read through it just one more time before submitting it. I'm now on something like six more times, and I keep editing it. Hopefully I'll decide I'm done in time to submit it.

I'm really unhappy with my story - even after the wonderful @FreyaGersemi offered her invaluable input which got me out of the rut I was stuck in. It just feels far too sad for a summer story. :( And despite a lot of effort invested to move away from that, towards an ending of growth and healing, it just seems bleak and depressing to get through the pages in order to reach that subtle ray of sunshine. Even the sex in it is kind of sad. Blah. I'm hoping I can fix it on time.
